A 7-year-old intact Netherlands Dwarf rabbit with bloody discharge from the vulva underwent ovariohysterectomy. Grossly, both sides of the uterus were enlarged. Histologically, the tumour had formed protruded from the myometrial wall toward the serosa and was composed of irregular small capillaries with irregularly shaped structures and bundled proliferation of spindle-shaped cells. No tumour cells infiltrated the endometrium. The tumour cells were positive for CD31, and histological and immunohistochemical staining confirmed the diagnosis of haemangiosarcoma. Vascular tumours in the uterus of…

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) consists of a tight network of blood capillaries in the brain that separate the circulatory system from the central nervous system. Its particular properties are based on the dynamic interaction between cerebral endothelial cells and other surrounding cells, especially astrocytes. We have designed and synthesized a three-dimensional scaffold that recapitulates the main hallmarks of the BBB extracellular matrix and serves as a platform to co-culture human brain microvascular endothelial cells and human cortical astrocytes. The scaffold can be exposed to flow, there…

We evaluated kidney histology in a 43-year-old woman with autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial kidney disease subtype hepatocyte nuclear factor 1β. Magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple cysts in the renal medullary area, and computed tomography showed hypoplasia of the pancreatic body and tail. A kidney biopsy showed thinning of the cortex, size reduction of glomerular tuft area, proximal tubule clustering, fibrosis around the tubules, loss of peritubular capillaries, and multilayered epithelial cells of cortical collecting ducts; this last finding was consistent with so-called medullary…

Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) represents a cluster of various vascular disorders with different pathological backgrounds. The advanced vasculature net of cerebral vessels, including small arteries, capillaries, arterioles and venules, is usually affected. Processes of oxidation underlie the pathology of CSVD, promoting the degenerative status of the epithelial layer. There are several classifications of cerebral small vessel diseases; some of them include diseases such as Binswanger's disease, leukoaraiosis, cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and lacunar strokes. This paper presents the charac…

In this work, we compare the blood aggregation parameters measured in vitro by laser aggregometry and optical trapping techniques in blood samples with the parameters of blood rheology measured in vivo by digital capillaroscopy in the nail bed capillaries of patients suffering from the hypertension and coronary heart disease. We show that the alterations of the parameters measured in vivo and in vitro for patients with different stages of these diseases are interrelated. Good agreement between the results obtained with different techniques, and their applicability for the diagnostics of abnorm…

Gorham disease, also known as massive osteolysis, is characterized by unregulated proliferation of lymphatic or vascular capillaries within bone, resulting in destruction and replacement with angiomatous tissue. This disease can lead to chylothorax that can be lethal. Viscum album extract from European mistletoe is a complementary anti-cancer drug which is commonly prescribed in many European countries and is considered as a new generation of chemical agent for pleurodesis. A 14-year-old girl presented with dyspnea and chest pain. She was diagnosed as Gorham disease who was definitively treate…

Angiokeratomas are rare benign vascular skin lesions arising in isolation or in groups of multiple lesions, as solitary cutaneous forms or generalized systemic forms. They are ectasias of dermal capillaries with an acanthotic and hyperkeratotic epidermis. They can occur in both healthy individuals and in those with underlying systemic disease due to inherited enzyme deficiency or other acquired predisposing factors. The identification and reporting of these lesions is important as patients with these lesions should be evaluated to rule out underlying pathogenic conditions. We report two rare c…

The American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) criteria for the classification of systemic sclerosis (SSc) were developed to classify more patients with SSc for studies and improve on previous criteria. The new classification criteria have the following criteria: skin thickening of the fingers extending proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joints. Seven additive items are each given a numerical weight: skin thickening, fingertip lesions, telangiectasia, abnormal nail fold capillaries, lung involvement, Raynaud's phenomenon, and SSc-related autoantibodies. …

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is characterized by the deposition of Β-amyloid protein in the media and adventitia of small arteries and capillaries. It may be an independent disease, but is often combined with Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review will discuss up-to-date understanding of the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations of CAA, its diagnosis with neuroimaging and biomarkers. Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) may be considered as neuroimaging markers of AD and CAA. The clinical significance of CAA is defined by the risk of intracerebral hemorrhages during thrombolytic therapy and warf…

We propose a microfluidics device whose main functional part consists of a microcapillary produced by the self-rolling of a thin poly(dimethylsiloxane) film. Rolling is caused by inhomogeneous swelling of the film, pre-treated by oxygen plasma, in the vapour of chloroform. The capillaries are integrated with external electrical circuits by co-rolling electrodes and micro-resistors. The local control of temperature in the tubes by Joule heating is illustrated via the rate of an intra-tubular chemiluminescent reaction. The novel tubes with engineered inner structure can find numerous advanced ap…

This study presents a patient who died of acute renal failure (ARF) as a complication of scleroderma. The patient remained normotensive throughout the clinical course. Myeloperoxidase-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody was negative. Autopsy revealed fibrin thrombi in the glomerular capillaries and afferent arterioles, mesangiolysis, and double contour of the glomerular basement membrane. Contrarily, "onionskin lesions" of renal interlobular arteries, the histological hallmark of scleroderma renal crisis, were not discovered. These findings suggested that thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) was …

Angiokeratoma is a benign vascular lesion. It is the result of dilation of ectatic subdermal vessels and congested capillaries. Weakness of the vessel walls, either from acquired or congenital reasons, can cause formation of the lesion. Angiokeratoma is more common in males, in whom it forms on the scrotal wall. An equivalent form can occur in females, generally on the vulva. The clitoris is an extremely rare location. We present the case of a 14-year-old girl with a clitoral angiokeratoma. To our knowledge, this is the first presented case of clitoral angiokeratoma in a child in English publi…

The patient was a 75-year-old man. He had been diagnosed with gastric hyperplastic polyp 4 years previously. The color of the apex of this polyp was whitish. Magnifying endoscopy findings revealed disappearance of the mucosal microstructure with irregular branched capillaries at the top of the polyp. Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) was performed. Histological examination revealed that a part of the polyp surface was replaced with papillary adenocarcinoma. Diagnosis of papillary adenocarcinoma in a hyperplastic polyp with mucosal invasion was made. Magnifying endoscopy was useful for the det…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system results from chronic bleeding in the superficial layers of the cortex and spinal cord. In cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), there is amyloid deposition in meningeal and meningo-cortical arteries and capillaries, predisposing them to rupture. CAA is frequently associated with Alzheimer disease (AD).
METHODS: We report a series of 3 AD patients with MRI evidence of superficial siderosis. Two had neuropathological examination confirming superficial siderosis, AD, and CAA.
CONCLUSIONS: Superficial siderosis should be re…

ANCA associated vasculitides are a group of disorders characterized by the presence of necrotizing inflammation of blood vessels that involve venules, capillaries, arterioles, arteries, and veins. They are characterized by the presence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). ANCA associated vasculitis commonly affects the kidney producing proteinuria, hematuria and variable degrees of renal failure. Other organs involved include the lung, skin and peripheral nervous system. We present a patient with limited systemic sclerosis, who later developed pauci-immune glomerulonephritis with p…

Small-vessel vasculitis is defined by the presence of blood vessel inflammation involving the arterioles, venules, or capillaries. This can be seen in a broad spectrum of settings, but it is most commonly associated with Wegener's granulomatosis, microscopic polyangiitis, and Churg-Strauss syndrome. Although prednisone combined with cyclophosphamide induces remission and prolongs survival in these diseases, this regimen is toxic and does not prevent relapse. Current therapeutic approaches seek to minimize cyclophosphamide exposure through the use of staged induction-maintenance regimens or cyc…

The Valsalva manoeuvre comprises forcible exhalation against the closed glottis, thereby creating a sudden increase in the intrathoracic or intra-abdominal pressure. A simultaneous rapid rise in intraocular venous pressure may result in the spontaneous rupture of perifoveal capillaries, leading to a characteristic clinical picture of a preretinal haemorrhage in an otherwise healthy eye. The haemorrhage typically occurs at the macula and in the vast majority of cases resolves without compromising visual acuity. Valsalva maculopathy is an isolated and self-limited event. A case of Valsalva macul…

A 3-day-old premature infant with meconium peritonitis, periventricular leukomalacia, and pulmonary hypertension died with respiratory insufficiency. An autopsy disclosed intravascular squamous cells in the lungs, brain, liver, pancreas, and kidneys. Numerous pulmonary capillaries and arterioles were occluded by squamous cells, accounting for pulmonary hypertension. Brain parenchyma surrounding occluded cerebral vessels showed infarct and gliosis. A mediastinal lymph node filled with squamous cells alluded to the mechanism by which these cells from the peritoneal cavity likely entered the bloo…

The ultrastructure of the pineal gland in the adult cat is described and compared with that of other mammals. Connective tissue spaces showed capillaries with nonfenestrated endothelia and numerous unmyelinated nerve fibers. In the proximal region of the gland, myelinated nerve fibers coming from the anterior commissure were also found. Cat pinealocytes showed a nucleus with prominent nucleoli, a well developed Golgi apparatus, centrioles, granular endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, abundant microtubuli and enlarged mitochondria. Pinealocytes showed several long processes with bulbous endings f…
