Eating disorders in females: genetics, pathophysiology, and treatment.

The eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are best conceptualized as syndromes and are classified on the basis of the clusters of symptoms they present. According to the multidimensional model, eating disorders begin with dieting, which is propelled into a full-blown disorder by antecedent conditions of biological vulnerability and genetics, premorbid psychological characteristics, family interactions, and social climate. The medical abnormalities present in individuals with eating disorders are due to starvation conditions and purging behaviors and will resolve with nutritiona

Traumatic brain injury and neurological stealth syndromes.

INTRODUCTION: A traumatic brain injury (TBI) of mild or more severe degree affects approximately ½ of the global population at some stage of their life. Mild TBI occurs in 70-90%, with 30 and 50% having symptoms persisting for more than 6 months. Mild TBI presentations include cognitive, elementary neurological, neuropsychiatric, endocrine, autonomic, cardiac, and general medical entities, with many behavioral neurological syndromes flying under the radar. AIMS: A retrospective examination of the cognitive and behavioral impairments in people with traumatic brain injury to evaluate the range

Genomic approach to investigate air pollution's causal impact on neurodevelopment and mental health: An extensive-scale 2-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Air pollution is a major global public health threat associated with increased morbidity and premature mortality. Growing evidence suggests that air pollution may also adversely affect brain health, contributing to cognitive impairment and mental disorders. However, most existing studies are observational and therefore vulnerable to residual confounding and reverse causation. Mendelian randomization (MR), which uses genetic variants as instrumental variables, offers a framework to strengthen causal inference regarding the neurological effects of air pollution. We conducted a 2-sample MR study

Cerebellar Alterations in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mini-Review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social communication and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. In addition, individuals diagnosed with ASD may also present cognitive impairments. The neurobiological mechanisms possibly associated with the cause of ASD have not yet been fully elucidated. Studies suggest that brain alterations, especially in the cerebellum, play a fundamental role in the etiology of ASD. This brain region, traditionally associated with motor control, has been implicated in several cognitive and emotional

Scale for the evaluation of communication disorders in patients with schizophrenia: a validation study.

OBJECTIVE: A scale for the evaluation of communication disorders in patients with schizophrenia (Schizophrenia Communication Disorder Scale-SCD) is proposed based on studies showing that cognitive disorders specific to the disorganization seen in schizophrenia consist of context processing deficits and problems in the attribution of mental states. Thus the focus of this scale is on the cognitive difficulties revealed in conversation during a structured interview. METHOD: Fifty-six patients with schizophrenia, depression or mania were evaluated. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Significantly elevated

Longitudinal course of panic disorder: findings from the Massachusetts General Hospital Naturalistic Study.

Clinical experience and controlled studies confirm the efficacy of pharmacologic and cognitive-behavioral interventions for the acute treatment of panic disorder and agoraphobia. However, while some patients experience long periods of true remission, panic disorder remains chronic for many, with intermittent periods of acute exacerbation and continued residual distress. Findings from the Massachusetts General Hospital Naturalistic Study of the Longitudinal Course of Panic Disorder suggest that (1) a number of factors contribute to the severity and persistence of panic disorder, including phobi

Cognitive function in different motor subtypes of Parkinson's disease: A systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: As the fastest-growing neurological disorder globally, a better understanding of Parkinson's disease (PD) is needed to improve patient outcomes and reduce the increasing economic and healthcare burden associated with the disease. Whilst classified as a movement disorder, this disease is highly heterogeneous, encompassing a broad range of both motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS). Cognitive impairment, presenting as either mild cognitive impairment or PD-dementia, is one of the most prevalent and disabling NMS. To better understand heterogeneity in PD, researchers have sought

[Fitness to drive: legal context and new opportunities for cognitive assessment].

Decisions regarding driving licence eligibility represents a complex medical and legal challenge, requiring careful consideration of both public safety and individual interests. The present paper provides a brief overview of the legal and administrative framework of fitness-to-drive evaluation, the roles of the professionals involved in the process, and key issues related to cognitive assessment. While physical symptoms associated with neurological conditions are generally objectively identifiable, cognitive impairments often remain less apparent and may significantly affect driving ability ev

An Impact of Metacognitive Training and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy on Quality of Life in Psychosis: A Systematic Review.

Although metacognitive training (MCT) and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) have been proven to be effective interventions for the treatment of symptoms of schizophrenia, still little is known about the effects on quality of life (QoL). This systematic review compares the effectiveness of MCT and CBT-based interventions for QoL in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Three electronic databases were screened up to October 2025 for MCT and CBT studies reporting QoL outcomes for patients diagnosed with SSD. Data from 38 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) met the inclusion c

[Current status and future perspectives on age-related hearing loss and cognitive impairment].

Objective:Age-related hearing loss(ARHL) is one of the most common sensory degenerative disorders in the elderly, characterized by high prevalence, insidious onset, and progressive deterioration. Recent studies indicate that ARHL not only impairs communication and quality of life in older adults, but is also significantly associated with the development of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. However, its underlying pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, and the relationship between clinical phenotypes of ARHL and cognitive decline has yet to be clearly defined. ARHL occupies a

Cognitive decline limits compensatory resource allocation within the aged swallowing network.

Cognitive decline has been postulated to predispose to presbyphagia but the neurophysiological basis of this interaction is unclear. To investigate the role of cognition for compensatory resource allocation within the swallowing network and behavioral swallowing performance in dual-task cognitive and motor interference in ageing, volunteers ≥ 70 years of age without preexisting diseases causing dysphagia were investigated using Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) including a cognitive and motor dual-task paradigm and a Montreal Cognitive Assessment. The neural correlates of swa

Assessment of Language Function in Older Mandarin-Speaking Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment using Multifaceted Language Tests.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), especially for those with multidomain cognitive deficits, should be clinically examined for determining risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. English-speakers with aMCI exhibit language impairments mostly at the lexical-semantic level. Given that the language processing of Mandarin Chinese is different from that of alphabetic languages, whether previous findings for English-speakers with aMCI can be generalized to Mandarin Chinese speakers with aMCI remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the multifaceted langua

The Thalamus in Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders.

Thalamus function and structure are known predictors of individual differences in the risk of age-related neurocognitive disorders (NCD), such as dementia. However, to date, little is known about their role in the perioperative setting. Here, we provide a narrative review of brain-imaging studies of preoperative and postoperative thalamus scanning parameters associated with risks of developing perioperative NCD, such as postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) during the postoperative phase. These findings are discussed in light of the concept of reserve capa

Neuropsychological domains and fitness to drive in mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive deficits associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's disease (AD) can impact driving. This integrative review investigated which cognitive domains were associated with poor driving performance or unfitness to drive in studies with outcomes measured in simulator or on-road driving in patients with MCI or AD. The review was conducted by searching for articles published between 2001 and 2020 in the MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, and SCOPUS databases. Studies addressing patients with other dementias (e.g., vascular or mixed dementia, Lewy body dementia, Parkinson's dise
