A Data Ingestion Procedure towards a Medical Images Repository.

UNLABELLED: This article presents an ingestion procedure towards an interoperable repository called ALPACS (Anonymized Local Picture Archiving and Communication System). ALPACS provides services to clinical and hospital users, who can access the repository data through an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application called PROXIMITY. This article shows the automated procedure for data ingestion from the medical imaging provider to the ALPACS repository. The data ingestion procedure was successfully applied by the data provider (Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile, HCUCH) using a pseudo-ano

Respiratory System Monitoring Based on Low-frequency Transmission Ultrasound Using Wearable Transducers.

Ultrasound's application in respiratory system monitoring has been constrained by factors such as reflections at the lung-pleural interface and scattering within the lungs. Recent studies have shown that ultrasound from 10 kHz to 750 kHz can penetrate the human thorax during expiration. However, challenges persist in signal reception during inspiration due to low signal amplitude. In this study, we introduce a waveform matching method designed to ensure reliable transmission signal reception throughout the entire respiratory cycle by tracking waveform variations. The feasibility of this approa

Neurological Disorders and Women's Health: Contribution of Molecular Neuroimaging Techniques.

Sex differences in brain physiology and the mechanisms of drug action have been extensively reported. These biological variances, from structure to hormonal and genetic aspects, can profoundly influence healthy functioning and disease mechanisms and might have implications for treatment and drug development. Molecular neuroimaging techniques may help to disclose sex's impact on brain functioning, as well as the neuropathological changes underpinning several diseases. This narrative review summarizes recent lines of evidence based on PET and SPECT imaging, highlighting sex differences in normal

Point-of-care access to clinical guidelines may improve management of incidental findings in the primary care setting.

RATIONALE: Incidental radiographic findings are common, and primary care providers (PCPs) are often charged with the conducting or initiating an appropriate evaluation. Clinical guidelines are available for management of common 'incidentalomas' including lung and adrenal nodules, but guidelines-adherent evaluations are not always performed; for example, in the setting of incidental adrenal masses (IAMs), recent literature suggests that an evidence-based evaluation occurs in <25% of patients for whom it is warranted-a quality and safety concern. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study

Point of Care Abdominal Ultrasound.

Abdominal pain is a common emergency department complaint, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) of the abdomen is increasingly being utilized to evaluate clinical manifestations. It aids in accurate diagnoses and assists in procedures, particularly in emergency and critical care settings. Imaging is often required to confirm the etiology of abdominal pain. POCUS provides the benefit of avoiding radiation exposure and enables quicker diagnosis compared to computed tomography scans. There is growing evidence of the diagnostic accuracy for numerous abdominal POCUS applications, including appendic

Prevalence of SIRS with primary epiploic appendagitis.

PURPOSE: Primary epiploic appendagitis (PEA) is not an uncommon cause of abdominal pain. The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria have high sensitivity for early detection of inflammation and infection. To date, there is limited data about the association between SIRS and PEA. The aims of this retrospective study were to evaluate the prevalence of SIRS response and its clinical relevance in patients diagnosed with PEA within a large tertiary hospital network. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on all consecutive adult patients who presented to four major emergency

Predicting the response to pulmonary vasodilator therapy in systemic sclerosis with pulmonary hypertension by using quantitative chest CT.

OBJECTIVES: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with pulmonary vascular disease and interstitial lung disease, making it difficult to differentiate pulmonary arterial hypertension and pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to lung diseases and/or hypoxia and to decide treatments. We aimed to predict the response to pulmonary vasodilators in patients with SSc and PH. METHODS: Eighty-four SSc patients were included with 47 having PH. Chest computed tomography was evaluated using software to calculate the abnormal lung volume (ALV). To define the response to vasodilators, Δ mean pulmonary artery pre

Investigation of the Evolution of Wavelet Higher-Order Dynamics in Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Owing to the advances in sensor technology and the emergence of wearable devices that enable daily self-monitoring, ECG signal processing methods for the automatic detection of AF are more pertinent than ever. In this paper, we investigate the use of wavelet higher-order statistics (WHOS) for feature extraction and differentiation between normal sinus rhythm and AF. The proposed approach captures the evolution of the WHOS dynamics and quantifies the changes in the time-var

Bioinformatics and systems biology approaches to identify molecular targeting mechanism influenced by COVID-19 on heart failure.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has emerged as a contemporary hazard to people. It has been known that COVID-19 can both induce heart failure (HF) and raise the risk of patient mortality. However, the mechanism underlying the association between COVID-19 and HF remains unclear. The common molecular pathways between COVID-19 and HF were identified using bioinformatic and systems biology techniques. Transcriptome analysis was performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). To identify gene ontology terms

Isolated multiple neuropathy as clinical manifestation of leukemia relapse.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroleukemia is a rare disorder of the peripheral nervous system due to leukemic cell infiltration. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 34-year-old patient with history of acute myelomonoblastic leukemia in remission that presented progressive paresis of the right median, bilateral facial, and left peroneal nerves. The electromyogram confirmed the diagnosis of multineuropathy. A PET-CT showed hypermetabolism of both sciatic, facial, and right median nerves. A bone marrow aspirate confirmed the leukemia relapse so a new round of chemotherapy was performed with improvement of t

Pseudotumoral calcinosis of the spine in systemic sclerosis - an atypical location.

Pseudotumoral calcinosis, particularly around the spine, is a rare complication of systemic sclerosis (SSc). The authors report a case of a 60-year-old woman with a limited cutaneous SSc observed for a 4-month history of back pain. Physical examination revealed a left paravertebral mass measuring around 7cm in the longest axis. The computed tomography (CT) showed the presence of calcified mass in the left paravertebral muscle, extending from the 12th dorsal to the 3rd lumbar vertebra. A diagnosis of pseudotumoral calcinosis secondary to SSc was made. Symptomatic treatment with analgesics allow

CT-M8 Mice: A New Mouse Model Demonstrates That Basophils Have a Nonredundant Role in Lupus-Like Disease Development.

Tissue-specific mouse models are essential tools to decipher the role of each cell compartment and/or their expressed genes in the pathophysiology of diseases. Here, we describe a new knock-in mouse model allowing expression of both the fluorescent protein tdTomato and the CRE recombinase selectively in the basophil compartment under the control of the Mcpt8 gene. These "CT-M8" mice did not show any abnormalities in their peripheral distribution of major immune cell populations nor their basophil function. CT-M8 mice allowed the identification of basophils by immunofluorescence and flow cytome

Ureteritis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

We report herein an unusual case of systemic lupus erythematosus in a 35-year-old woman who developed acute abdominal pain while hospitalized. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan with enhancement indicated long-segment inflammatory lesions in the right ureter. The patient received spasmolytic and analgesic drugs with poor effect and continued to have persistent severe abdominal pain and signs of peritonitis. We suspected that the patient had acute abdominal disease, but no abnormality was detected during laparoscopic surgery. Therefore, we considered the possibility of right upper urinary

Learning hydrodynamic signatures through proprioceptive sensing by bioinspired swimmers.

Objects moving in water or stationary objects in streams create a vortex wake. Such vortex wakes encode information about the objects and the flow conditions. Underwater robots that often function with constrained sensing capabilities can benefit from extracting this information from vortex wakes. Many species of fish do exactly this, by sensing flow features using their lateral lines as part of their multimodal sensing. To replicate such capabilities in robots, significant research has been devoted to developing artificial lateral line sensors that can be placed on the surface of a robot to d

Tracking progress towards malaria elimination in China: Individual-level estimates of transmission and its spatiotemporal variation using a diffusion network approach.

In order to monitor progress towards malaria elimination, it is crucial to be able to measure changes in spatio-temporal transmission. However, common metrics of malaria transmission such as parasite prevalence are under powered in elimination contexts. China has achieved major reductions in malaria incidence and is on track to eliminate, having reporting zero locally-acquired malaria cases in 2017 and 2018. Understanding the spatio-temporal pattern underlying this decline, especially the relationship between locally-acquired and imported cases, can inform efforts to maintain elimination and p

Predicting potential adverse events using safety data from marketed drugs.

BACKGROUND: While clinical trials are considered the gold standard for detecting adverse events, often these trials are not sufficiently powered to detect difficult to observe adverse events. We developed a preliminary approach to predict 135 adverse events using post-market safety data from marketed drugs. Adverse event information available from FDA product labels and scientific literature for drugs that have the same activity at one or more of the same targets, structural and target similarities, and the duration of post market experience were used as features for a classifier algorithm. Vehicular traffic noise prediction and propagation modelling using neural networks and geospatial information system.

This study proposes a neural network (NN) model to predict and simulate the propagation of vehicular traffic noise in a dense residential area at the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) in Shah Alam, Malaysia. The proposed model comprises of two main simulation steps: that is, the prediction of vehicular traffic noise using NN and the simulation of the propagation of traffic noise emission using a mathematical model. First, the NN model was developed with the following selected noise predictors: the number of motorbikes, the sum of vehicles, car ratio, heavy vehicle ratio (e.g. truck, lorry and
