The Relationship between Risk Factors of Head Trauma with CT Scan Findings in Children with Minor Head Trauma Admitted to Hospital.

BACKGROUND: In emergency medicine for determining the intracranial injury (ICI) in children with head trauma, usually brain CT scan is performed. Since brain CT scan, especially in children, has some disadvantages, it is better to find a procedure which could help to choose only the children with real head trauma injury for brain CT scan. AIMS: The aim of this study is to find such procedure. This study was descriptive, analytic and non-interventional. METHODS: We reviewed the archived files of children with head trauma injuries referred to the emergency department of Imam Hossein Hospital w

BmpR1A is a major type 1 BMP receptor for BMP-Smad signaling during skull development.

Craniosynostosis is caused by premature fusion of one or more sutures in an infant skull, resulting in abnormal facial features. The molecular and cellular mechanisms by which genetic mutations cause craniosynostosis are incompletely characterized, and many of the causative genes for diverse types of syndromic craniosynostosis have not yet been identified. We previously demonstrated that augmentation of BMP signaling mediated by a constitutively active BMP type IA receptor (ca-BmpR1A) in neural crest cells (ca1A hereafter) causes craniosynostosis and superimposition of heterozygous null mutati

Impact of genioplasty during puberty on the upper airways.

AIM: Mouth breathing is a functional disorder that affects craniofacial and dento-alveolar growth and also upper airway (UA) anatomy. This is apparent mainly in dimensional abnormalities of the UA caused by hypertrophy of Waldeyer's ring and excessive vertical development of the lower part, giving rise to labial incompetence that perpetuates the functional disorder. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the development of the oropharyngeal structures in young hyperdivergent patients who had undergone functional genioplasty in the context of orthodontic treatment. METHODS: This is a compa

Detection of a de novo Y278C mutation in FGFR3 in a pregnancy with severe fetal hypochondroplasia: prenatal diagnosis and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: We describe a prenatal molecular diagnosis of hypochondroplasia (HCH) in a pregnancy not at risk of HCH and review the literature on prenatal diagnosis of HCH. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old primigravid woman was referred for genetic counseling at 30 weeks of gestation because of short-limbed dwarfism in the fetus. The woman had a body height of 152 cm. Her husband had a body height of 180 cm. Level II ultrasound showed a normal amount of amniotic fluid and a singleton fetus with fetal biometry equivalent to 30 weeks except for short limbs. Fetal biometry measurements were as follows:

5-HT2B receptor-mediated serotonin morphogenetic functions in mouse cranial neural crest and myocardiac cells.

During embryogenesis, serotonin has been reported to be involved in craniofacial and cardiovascular morphogenesis. The detailed molecular mechanisms underlying these functions, however remain unknown. From mouse and human species, we have recently reported the cloning of 5-HT2B receptors which share signal transduction pathways with other 5-HT2 receptor subtypes (5-HT2A and 5-HT2C). In addition to phospholipase C stimulation, it appears that these three subtypes of receptor transduce a common serotonin-induced mitogenic activity, which could be important for cell differentiation and proliferat

Craniosynostosis in Siblings, an Extremely Rare Occurrence: A Case Report.

Craniosynostosis (CS) is the premature fusion of skull sutures, with all sutures except the metopic suture typically fusing in adulthood. Premature fusion constrains brain growth, leading to abnormal skull shape and potential neurocognitive or neurological issues, along with syndromic features in some cases. While CS is rare, its occurrence in siblings is exceptionally uncommon and holds significant academic importance. We report a case of CS in siblings: a 13-month-old boy and his five-and-a-half-year-old sister. Neither parent exhibits craniofacial dysmorphism or signs of increased intracran

Tmem2 Deficiency Leads to Enamel Hypoplasia and Soft Enamel in Mouse.

Teeth consist of 3 mineralized tissues: enamel, dentin, and cementum. Tooth malformation, the most common craniofacial anomaly, arises from complex genetic and environmental factors affecting enamel structure, size, shape, and tooth eruption. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a primary extracellular matrix component, contributes to structural and physiological functions in periodontal tissue. Transmembrane protein 2 (TMEM2), a novel cell surface hyaluronidase, has been shown to play a critical role during embryogenesis. In this study, we demonstrate Tmem2 messenger RNA expression in inner enamel epitheliu

Siblings with profound connective tissue disease: First report of biallelic TGFBR1-related Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

Heterozygous missense variants in TGFBR1, encoding one subunit of the transforming growth factor-beta receptor, are a well-established cause of Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS)-an autosomal dominant disorder with variable phenotypic expression. Patients with LDS have compromised connective tissues that can result in life-threatening arterial aneurysms, craniosynostosis, characteristic craniofacial and skeletal anomalies, skin translucency, and abnormal wound healing. We report a full sibship with a biallelic type of TGFBR1-related disease. Each born at 38 weeks had aortic root dilation, congenital d

Neurodevelopmental Genetic Diseases Associated With Microdeletions and Microduplications of Chromosome 17p13.3.

Chromosome 17p13.3 is a region of genomic instability that is linked to different rare neurodevelopmental genetic diseases, depending on whether a deletion or duplication of the region has occurred. Chromosome microdeletions within 17p13.3 can result in either isolated lissencephaly sequence (ILS) or Miller-Dieker syndrome (MDS). Both conditions are associated with a smooth cerebral cortex, or lissencephaly, which leads to developmental delay, intellectual disability, and seizures. However, patients with MDS have larger deletions than patients with ILS, resulting in additional symptoms such as

FGF8 dose-dependent regulation of embryonic submandibular salivary gland morphogenesis.

FGF8 has been shown to play important morphoregulatory roles during embryonic development. The observation that craniofacial, cardiovascular, pharyngeal, and neural phenotypes vary with Fgf8 gene dosage suggests that FGF8 signaling induces differences in downstream responses in a dose-dependent manner. In this study, we investigated if FGF8 plays a dose-dependent regulatory role during embryonic submandibular salivary gland (SMG) morphogenesis. We evaluated SMG phenotypes of Fgf8 hypomorphic mice, which have decreased Fgf8 gene function throughout embryogenesis. We also evaluated SMG phenotype

Glue ear: an ongoing global program - closing the audiology gap among First Nations children.

Most children globally (~80%) are affected by Otitis Media with Effusion (OME; 'serous otitis media' or 'glue ear') by four years of age. Most episodes resolve in a timely manner are brief and uncomplicated. Chronic, recurrent and complicated OME has been linked to social disadvantage, with poorer educational and employment outcomes and increased criminal justice system contact. Specific populations are particularly at risk, even in High Income Countries, including children with craniofacial abnormalities, immunocompromise and First Nations children in colonised regions (e.g., Australia, New Z…
