Iron-Coordinated Thiourea Formaldehyde Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Water Splitting.

A key challenge in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the development of efficient and durable catalysts for applications such as water electrolyzers and metal-air batteries. Due to sluggish reaction kinetics, the OER typically requires an overpotential significantly higher than the thermodynamic potential of 1.23 V vs RHE, which limits the overall efficiency of electrochemical energy systems. In this work, we report the design and synthesis of an iron-coordinated thiourea-formaldehyde framework, denoted as (Fe-TF) n , as a nonprecious metal-based electrocatalyst for the OER. Its significa…

Donor/Acceptor Bulk Heterojunctions for Efficient Visible-Light CO2 Reduction to CO.

High-performance organic photovoltaic (OPV) materials, characterized by tunable energy levels, broad light absorption, and facile processability, show considerable potential for photocatalytic applications. However, their inherent susceptibility to oxygen and moisture limits their practical use under complex reaction conditions. Here, organic photocatalyst/adsorbent systems based on donor/acceptor (D/A) bulk heterojunctions, particularly PM6:SY1 and PM6:Y6 supported on biochar (BC), were constructed to bridge the different interfacial requirements of organic photocatalysis at the gas-liquid-so

Fluorine-free fabrication of durable superhydrophobic membranes for efficient oil-water separation.

The increasing occurrence of marine oil spills and industrial oily wastewater discharge demands efficient and sustainable oil-water separation technologies. Herein, we report a fluorine-free and scalable strategy to fabricate superhydrophobic nonwoven membranes via a simple two-step dip-coating process. By grafting hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) onto viscose/polyester substrates followed by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating, the resulting membrane exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity, mechanical robustness, and chemical stability. The optimized membrane achieves separation efficiencies

An Optimized and Improved Protocol for Efficient Isolation of Extracellular RNA from Human Serum.

The extraction of extracellular RNA from human serum is challenging due to its low abundance, high degree of fragmentation, and susceptibility to rapid degradation. These limitations are further compounded in pediatric research, where low blood sample volume is a major, frequent constraint, necessitating highly sensitive and efficient RNA extraction methods suitable for minimal-input samples. Existing protocols use TRIzol or commercial kits, which are primarily optimized for the enrichment of small RNAs rather than for the comprehensive recovery of extracellular RNA. Here, we present an optimi

Engineering of isopropanol-tolerant carbonyl reductase for cofactor-free efficient testosterone synthesis.

Testosterone (TS), a vital androgen and key precursor of hormonal pharmaceuticals, plays a critical role in reproductive health. Although the enzymatic method is regarded as a green TS preparation process, its low productivity and dependence on exogenous cofactors still limit its scalability. In the present study, we addressed these challenges by engineering AxSDR, an isopropanol-tolerant carbonyl reductase from Algoriella xinjiangensis, to enable cofactor-free TS synthesis from 4-androstenedione (4AD). The wild-type AxSDR failed to catalyze 4AD due of the presence of a bottleneck with large s

Which augmentation is more efficient for ankle lateral ligament repair: A biomecanical study.

INTRODUCTION: Augmented repair is recommended in severe cases of ankle instability, but the technique remains debated. This study compared ankle and subtalar joint stability after Broström-Gould (BG) and Broström with inferior extensor retinaculum (IER) augmentation using a 3D opto-electronic protocol. METHODS: Eighteen cadaveric feet were tested in four conditions: intact, unstable (lateral ankle and subtalar ligaments disinserted), BG, and IER. Three manual tests were applied: anterior drawer (ADT), varus tilt in neutral (VTTN), and in dorsiflexion (VTTF). Ankle and subtalar rotations and A

Reducing the complexity of sum-of-products potential energy surfaces for efficient MCTDH calculations.

The efficiency of the multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method depends critically on the availability of a compact sum-of-products (SOP) representation of the potential energy surface (PES). For medium- and high-dimensional molecular systems, conventional SOP representations often contain thousands of product terms, leading to long compilation times, high memory consumption, and prohibitive computational cost. In this work, we introduce a physically motivated factorization procedure that transforms an existing SOP PES into a substantially more compact form without altering the…

Development of a counterselection system for efficient marker-free genetic manipulation in Avibacterium paragallinarum.

UNLABELLED: Avibacterium paragallinarum causes infectious coryza in chickens, a condition that is prevalent worldwide and causes considerable losses for the poultry sector. However, the scarcity of information concerning the virulence factors of the bacterium and the underlying pathogenic mechanisms is largely due to the lack of effective and practical tools for genetic manipulation. Herein, the point mutation A294G was introduced in the gene pheS of Av. paragallinarum to establish a counterselectable marker AppheSm. The host strain harboring the gene AppheSm exhibited sensitivity to para-chlo

Efficient co-transcriptional splicing enforces rapid microexon definition and inclusion by SRRM4.

Alternative splicing expands the coding potential of the genome. Typical human exons are 150 nucleotides long, encoding 50 amino acids. Microexons are only 3-27 nucleotides long; yet they are important regulators of cellular processes in neurons, muscle, and pancreas. In neurons, microexon inclusion is aided by binding of the neuronal splicing factor SRRM4 to flanking upstream 3' splice sites (3'SSs). Whether this manner of exon definition can be achieved in the timeframe of co-transcriptional splicing is unknown. Here, we employed nascent RNA sequencing to analyze SRRM4-dependent microexons i

Streamlined synthetic regulatory cassette for efficient and photoreceptor-enriched retinal gene expression.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are major causes of vision loss and often associated with the degeneration of retinal neurons, such as photoreceptors. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors hold therapeutic potential for IRDs; however, their off-target expression has prompted the development of refined engineering strategies to enhance cell-type preference without compromising transgene expression. Here, we present G5mP, a streamlined 315-bp synthetic promoter-enhancer construct designed for robust retinal gene expression. G5mP integrates three components: G5, a G protein-coupled receptor kina

Cerebellum-inspired memtransistors enable emergent differentiation for hardware-efficient novelty detection.

Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are currently executed using silicon-based hardware, resulting in excessively high energy demand for data centers. Edge computing AI for healthcare, robotics, and autonomous vehicles presents even stricter power and latency constraints, which are unmet by incumbent computing architectures. With vastly superior energy efficiency, biological neuronal networks provide hints towards alternative computational approaches including memory-logic colocation, asynchronous parallelism, and spike-triggered computation. Here, we draw inspiration from the cerebellum t…

Tuning the Acceptor Core in Cyano PyridineBased Framework to Realize Efficient TADF Emitters.

For next-generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays and lighting, achieving stable, efficient deep-blue and sky-blue emission remains a challenge. Herein, we report a cyanopyridine-based modular scaffold, an asymmetric dual core (2tCz2PyCN) that suppresses exciton loss to achieve sky-blue emission, and an asymmetric single core analog (2tCzPyCN). The single core 2tCzPyCN exhibits deep blue emission (λmax = 437 nm) with a CIE of (0.15, 0.14), asymmetric 2tCz2PyCN emitter exhibits sky-blue emission (λmax = 478 nm) with a CIE of (0.19, 0.38). The reduced conjugation in the single cor

Fabrication of stable chitosan-liposomes via flash nanoprecipitation for efficient fluconazole encapsulation.

Liposomes, as effective drug delivery systems, face limitations in their low efficiency of traditional preparation methods and inherent physical instability. In this study, we systematically compared two strategies based on Flash Nanoprecipitation (FNP) technology for the rapid and controllable preparation of chitosan hybrid liposomes. We hypothesize that the "one-step" FNP method, which mixed chitosan and lipid solutions simultaneously, potentially enabled direct co-assembly between chitosan and lipid molecules, so that chitosan molecules likely embedded within the phospholipid bilayer, resul…

Efficient Voice-Based Parkinson Classification via Algorithm-Level Class Balancing.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, and the diagnostic procedures are very crucial in enhancing patient outcomes when performed on time and accurately. Machine learning procedures have shown promising results in identifying PD; however, the small sample sizes and strong imbalance of the classes, with substantially more patient samples than healthy ones, are often observed in voice features-based biomedical data from Parkinson's patients, which poses significant limitations to the model generalization and stability. The current study was motivated by the need t

A bovine H5N1 virus efficiently replicates in differentiated human nasal epithelial cells.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) viruses of clade 2.3.4.4b have caused significant losses in bird populations worldwide and repeatedly infected mammals, including humans, without sustained human to human transmission. Here we show that an H5N1 virus (H5N1Tex/24) isolated from bovine milk in Texas in 2024 replicates just as efficiently in differentiated human nasal epithelial cells as a pandemic H1N1 virus strain from 2009 (H1N1HH4/09), at both 37 °C and 33 °C. The adaptive mutations PB2 M631L and PA K497R promoted replication at 33 °C but had no effect on replication at 37 °C. An H5N1

Chassis selection and metabolic fine-tuning enable efficient in planta betalain production.

Synthetic biology enables efficient production of valuable compounds in biological systems, including plants that capture atmospheric CO2 to synthesize and accumulate abundant and diverse specialized metabolites. Most plant synthetic biology studies to produce specialized metabolites have primarily used Nicotiana benthamiana as an underpinning metabolic chassis, due to its rapid agroinfiltration method, leaving much of the metabolic potential of other plant species underexplored. Here we engineered 3 distinct plant chassis-Arabidopsis, tobacco and soybean-by stably introducing an optimized bet

Real-Time MRI With Deep Learning for Efficient Evaluation of Neuromuscular Breathing Impairment.

Efficient detection of breathing impairment is critical for treatment and prognosis in neuromuscular disorders. However, standard pulmonary function tests often yield ambiguous results. This prospective study evaluates whether advanced real-time MRI (RT-MRI) combined with deep learning-based image segmentation provides sensitive outcome measures for respiratory dysfunction in late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD), a model disease for diaphragmatic weakness. Eleven Pompe patients (mean age 52.2 years; 55% female) and 11 controls (mean age 50.9 years; 55% female) were included. RT-MRI with a temporal

An antisense method for efficient exon skipping and its application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Antisense-mediated exon skipping has been used to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) by restoring the DMD reading frame to express partially functional dystrophin. However, difficulty in designing effective antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) has hindered the development of clinically effective therapies. Here we describe a robust bipartite ASO design, termed 5' splice site decoy (5D)-ASO, in which a short tail sequence is employed to enhance the splicing repression exerted by an antisense moiety. The tail carried by the antisense moiety to an exon of interest in a target pre-mRNA interfere
