Efficient encoding of neural signals can influence sensory and cognitive information, which is crucial for regulating emotions and behaviors. Current encoding strategies primarily focus on active ion channels for signal inputs, often overlooking the role of membrane structural properties in signal transduction. Here, we present a membrane interface topology strategy to reshape membrane structure, enabling neural signal re-encoding and altering information output. We design gold nanorods coated with bioadhesive polydopamine (Au@PDA), which tightly adhere to membranes, forming a topological inte

BACKGROUND: Mid-myocardial ventricular arrhythmias are challenging to treat. Cardiac electroporation via pulsed electric fields (PEFs) offers significant promise. We therefore tested PEF delivery using screw-in pacemaker leads as proof-of-concept.
METHODS: In 5 canine models, we applied nanosecond PEF (pulse width 300 ns) across the right ventricular (RV) septum using a single lead bipolar configuration (n = 2) and between two leads (n = 3). We recorded electrograms (EGMs) prior to, immediately post, and 5 min after PEF. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) and histopathology were perfor

Learned helplessness (a model of depression-like state) was developed in rats by exposure to repeated inescapable electric stimulation and evaluated by the absence of attempts to escape when it could be performed. In randomly grouped outbred white rats, 37.5% animals after the above procedure meet the criterion of learned helplessness. On experimental day 14, the latent period and the number of applied electric shocks prior to the first escape to the safe compartment in rats with learned helplessness were significantly higher than in the control, but no significant differences in these paramet…

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper was to develop and test a novel control algorithm that enables stroke survivors to pedal a cycle in a desired cadence range despite varying levels of functional abilities after stroke.
METHODS: A novel algorithm was developed which automatically adjusts 1) the intensity of functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivered to the leg muscles, and 2) the current delivered to an electric motor. The algorithm automatically switches between assistive, uncontrolled, and resistive modes to accommodate for differences in functional impairment, based on the misma

Lightning is the second most common cause of weather-related death in the United States. Lightning is a natural atmospheric discharge that occurs between regions of net positive and net negative electric charges. There are several types of lightning, including streak lightning, sheet lightning, ribbon lightning, bead lightning, and ball lightning. Lightning causes injury through five basic mechanisms: direct strike, flash discharge (splash), contact, ground current (step voltage), and blunt trauma. While persons struck by lightning show evidence of multisystem derangement, the most dramatic ef

Despite the use of acupuncture to treat a number of heart diseases, little is known about the mechanisms that underlie its actions. Therefore, we examined the influence of acupuncture on sympathoexcitatory cardiovascular responses to gastric distension in anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. Thirty minutes of low-current, low-frequency, (0.3-0.5 mA, 2 Hz) electroacupuncture (EA), at P 5-6, S 36-37, and H 6-7 overlying the median, deep peroneal, and ulnar nerves significantly decreased reflex pressor responses by 40, 39, and 44%, respectively. In contrast, sham acupuncture involving needle inserti

This paper presents an architecture for sensing nerve signals and delivering functional electrical stimulation to peripheral and visceral nerves. The design is based on the very large scale integration (VLSI) technology and amenable to interface to microelectrodes and building a fully implantable system. The proposed stimulator was tested on the vagus nerve and is under further evaluation and testing of various visceral nerves and their functional effects on the innervated organs.

Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a prevalent chronic condition that greatly affects patient quality of life. Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) has recently been proven to be a safe and effective noninvasive treatment modality for OAB. However, existing electrical stimulators are relatively large, relying on adhesive hydrogel electrodes, and may require professional assistance, which could hinder patient adherence and treatment consistency. To address these, a compact and wearable electrical stimulator (TENSmini) with integrated textile electrodes was developed. Although labora

INTRODUCTION: Current scientific developments seem to allow for an "olfactory implant" in analogy to cochlear implants. However, the position and surgical approaches for electrical stimulation of the olfactory system are unclear.
METHODS: In a human anatomic cadaver study, we investigated different endoscopic approaches to electrically stimulate the olfactory bulb (OB) based on the following considerations: (1) the stimulating electrode should be close to the OB. (2) The surgical procedure should be as non-invasive and safe as possible and (3) as easy as possible for an experienced ENT surgeo

The objective methods for the hearing examination of the patients after cochlear implantation provide an important tool for the speech processor fitting. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibilities and the informative value of the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) and electrically evoked auditory brainstem response (EABR) combined recording technique. For this reason, the comparison of the ECAP and EABR thresholds with comfortable levels of stimulation, obtained on the basis of subjective response and psychophysical testing of the patients with good result

In the mammalian inner ear, the gain control of auditory inputs is exerted by medial olivocochlear (MOC) neurons that innervate cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs). OHCs mechanically amplify the incoming sound waves by virtue of their electromotile properties while the MOC system reduces the gain of auditory inputs by inhibiting OHC function. How this process is orchestrated at the synaptic level remains unknown. In the present study, MOC firing was evoked by electrical stimulation in an isolated mouse cochlear preparation, while OHCs postsynaptic responses were monitored by whole-cell recordings

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of central nervous system areas with surgically implanted stimulators has been shown to result in pain relief. To avoid the risks and side effects of surgery, transcranial direct current stimulation is an option to electrically stimulate the motor cortex through the skull. Previous research has shown that transcranial direct current stimulation relieves pain in patients with fibromyalgia, chronic neuropathic pain and chronic pelvic pain. Evidence indicates that the method is pain free, safe and inexpensive.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has emerged as a promising approach to enhance neuroplasticity and functional recovery after stroke. However, substantial inter-individual variability in treatment response limits its clinical translation. The lack of objective neuroimaging biomarkers that capture stimulation-induced brain reorganization remains a critical barrier to personalized neuromodulation.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize current evidence on electroencephalography (EEG)- and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based biomarkers of NIBS-induced neuroplasticity in post-st

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and represents a critical window for interventions aimed at slowing neurodegenerative progression. Disruptions in neural oscillatory activity are key contributors to memory dysfunction in MCI and AD. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that entrains neural oscillations at specific frequencies, potentially restoring network dynamics underlying memory.
METHODS: The MemStim study is a randomized, sham-controlled, parallel-arm, double-blind clini

The effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are typically attributed to the polarization of cortical neurons by the weak electric fields it generates in the cortex. However, emerging evidence indicates that certain tDCS effects may be mediated through the co-stimulation of peripheral or cranial nerves, particularly the trigeminal nerve (TN), which projects to critical brainstem nuclei that regulate the release of various neurotransmitters throughout the central nervous system. Despite this, the specific pathways involved remain inadequately characterized. In this study, we ex

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions is currently proposed as therapeutic intervention for major depression and other psychiatric disorders. The in-depth mechanistic understanding of this bipolar and non-focal stimulation technique is still incomplete. In a pilot study, we investigated the effects of bifrontal stimulation on brain metabolite levels and resting state connectivity under the cathode using multiparametric MRI techniques and computational tDCS modeling. Within a double-blind cross-over design, 20 subjects (12 women, 23.7 ± 2 years) wer

Ultra Low Frequency Transcutaneous Electric Nervous Stimulation (ULF-TENS) is extensively used for pain relief and for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). In addition to its local effects, ULF-TENS acts on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), with particular reference to the periaqueductal gray (PAG), promoting the release of endogenous opioids and modulating descending pain systems. It has been suggested that the PAG participates in the coupling between the emotional stimulus and the appropriate behavioral autonomic response. This function is successfully investig
