The jewel wasp Nasonia vitripennis utilizes two single-copy, protamine-like sperm nuclear basic proteins.

The DNA of sperm is uniquely packaged into an exceptionally condensed chromatin state with sperm nuclear basic proteins (SNBPs). These proteins are diverse, including protamines, protamine-like (PL) proteins, testis-specific (TS) histones, and high mobility group (HMG)-box proteins. Usage of SNBP type varies widely among and within phyla. Moreover, SNBPs can be evolutionarily dynamic in copy number and amino acid composition, even among closely related species. Despite the diversity of insects, little is known about SNBP usage across members of this taxonomic group. A previous study biochemica

Custodiol Versus Del Nido Cardioplegia in Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Repair-a Propensity Score-Matched Study.

OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive mitral valve repair (MIMVR) is the preferred approach to treat mitral regurgitation in specialized centres. Custodiol and Del Nido cardioplegia are widely used, yet direct comparative data on their efficacy and safety in this setting remain limited. This study investigated their efficacy and impact on early outcomes in a propensity-matched cohort. METHODS: We performed a single-centre, retrospective matched cohort study of 2490 patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve surgery between October 2014 and January 2025. After exclusions, 960 patients entere

Humanizing care in the ICU: how system pressures shape interacting patterns of hurry, blur, burden, and cruelty.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units are high-acuity environments characterized by time pressure, medical complexity, and organizational demands. These conditions may influence clinicians' ability to provide patient-centered care and contribute to forms of care perceived as fragmented or dehumanizing. OBJECTIVE: To examine how ICU clinicians describe and make sense of the pressures shaping everyday critical care practice, and how these pressures give rise to interacting patterns of care, including those described as hurry, blur, burden, and cruelty. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study usin

Evaluation of ovarian microvascular structure in PCOS patients based on high-resolution ultrasound imaging technology.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) patients often have ovarian microcirculatory disorders. Traditional color Doppler imaging of microvascular is not sensitive enough and is prone to missed detection or artifact interference. This study is based on a high-frequency probe combined with SMI (Superb Microvascular Imaging) and ultrasound contrast imaging to achieve high signal-to-noise ratio acquisition and dynamic quantification of low-speed blood flow in microvascular, filling the gap in existing technology. This study sets low-pass filtering and low PRF (Pulse Repetition Frequency) to enhance the

Center of mass estimation during non-cyclic activities: Comparison of marker-based methods and their fusion with ground reaction forces.

Accurate estimation of the whole-body center of mass (CoM) is essential for assessing human stability and postural control. However, selecting a suitable estimation method considering the nature of the activity, availability of equipment such as force plates measuring ground reaction forces (GRFs), and the time needed for data collection and processing is challenging. This study compares four methods for estimation of the 3D CoM position and velocity - "Pelvis Markerset" (PM), "Pelvis Markerset & GRFs" (PMG), "Whole-Body Markerset" (WM), and "Whole-Body Markerset & GRFs" (WMG) - across 4 activ

Sex differences in brain activity and connectivity in late-life depression.

BACKGROUND: There are notable sex differences in the symptoms and treatment response of late-life depression (LLD); however, the underlying static and dynamic abnormalities in brain function that may drive these disparities remain unclear. This study was to investigate sex-specific aberrant brain activity in LLD. METHODS: We recruited 75 LLD patients and 164 healthy controls (HCs). Static and dynamic metrics of amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and functional connectivity (FC) were compared across four groups (LLD-female, LLD-male, HC-female, and HC-m

Multimodal Exercise Program of Balance and Strength Improves Dynamic Balance, Strength and Functionality and Decreases the Risk of Falls in Adults With Haemophilia.

INTRODUCTION: Haemophilia is a hereditary bleeding disorder that leads to joint damage and musculoskeletal impairments, affects balance and increases the risk of falls. Although exercise is beneficial, little is known about the clinical effects of programmes that focus on balance and proprioception in people with haemophilia (PwH). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-week multimodal balance and strength training programme (MBSTP) on balance, fall risk, strength, functionality, kinesiophobia and quality of life (QoL) in adult PwH. METHODS: A single-blind non-randomiz

Decoding tinnitus progression: neurochemical shifts in the anterior cingulate cortex revealed by magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus persists as a significant public health challenge with elusive neurochemical underpinnings. Emerging evidence implicates dysregulated excitatory-inhibitory neurotransmission in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a limbic-auditory hub governing tinnitus salience. This study investigates dynamic ACC neurochemical changes during tinnitus progression. METHODS: Using single-voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), GABA+/creatine (Cr) and Glx (glutamate+glutamine)/Cr ratios were measured in the ACC of 16 recent-onset (RO; <6 months), 22 chronic (CH; ≥6 months) tinnitus pa

Optimizing Polyethylene Glycol Coating for Stealth Nanodiamonds.

Nanodiamonds (NDs) have emerged as potential candidates for versatile platforms in nanomedicine, offering unique properties that enhance their utility in drug delivery, imaging, and therapeutic applications. To improve their biocompatibility and nanomedical applicability, NDs are coated with organic polymer chains, such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), which are well known to prolong their blood-circulating lifetime by reducing the surface adsorption of serum proteins. Theoretical simulations are useful tools to define, at the atomic level, the optimal parameters that guide the presentation of

Functional Brain Abnormalities in Patients With Accommodative Asthenopia: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Excessive electronic device use has intensified visual workload, resulting in accommodative asthenopia (AA). Our previous functional MRI (fMRI) studies linked abnormal brain function to AA, prompting this resting-state fMRI study to explore local and global brain activity changes. METHODS: We recruited 33 healthy controls and 44 patients with AA, analyzing regional brain function via coherent regional homogeneity (Cohe-ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF)/fractional ALFF (fALFF). Group independent component analysis (gICA) extracted independent compo

Theoretical investigation of penicillamine adsorption on mg12o12 fullerene-like cages considering solvent effects, electronic properties, and potential biomedical applications.

This study explores the enhancement of adsorption properties of penicillamine (PCA) in both neutral and zwitterionic forms through the use of magnesium oxide (Mg12O12) fullerene-like cages, supported by density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Results indicate that PCA adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic, with the cage preferentially abstracting a hydrogen atom from surface hydroxyl groups, leading to strong interactions evidenced by adsorption energies of -2.250 eV in water and - 2.204 eV in chloroform. Charge transfer from the Mg12O12 cage to PCA was appr

Cylindrical single-wall and double-wall structures with or without internal water subjected to underwater shock loading.

A series of experimental studies were conducted for cylindrical structures subjected to underwater shock loading to understand their dynamic responses and failure characteristics. All tests were performed inside an anechoic water tank. The submerged test cylinders were freely suspended, and an underwater shock loading was generated by the Compressed Air Shock Pipe Underwater Release (CASPUR) system. Cylinders were made of two different materials. The first group of cylinders was fabricated from carbon fiber and resin using the filament winding technique. The winding angles were ± 45° resulting

Disrupted dynamic brain functional connectivity in male cocaine use disorder: Hyperconnectivity, strongly-connected state tendency, and links to impulsivity and borderline traits.

Cocaine use is a major public health problem with serious negative consequences at both the individual and societal levels. Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is associated with cognitive and emotional impairments, often manifesting as alterations in brain functional connectivity (FC). This study employed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to examine dynamic FC in 38 male participants with CUD and 31 matched healthy controls. Using group spatial independent component analysis (group ICA) combined with sliding window approach, we identified two recurring distinct connectivity

Similar patterns of tendon regional hypertrophy after low-load blood flow restriction and high-load resistance training.

PURPOSE: Recent evidence indicates that low-load blood flow restriction (LL-BFR) training elicits an anabolic response in tendinous tissue. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the hypertrophic pattern induced in the Achilles tendon by LL-BFR, in comparison with the regional hypertrophy typically observed with conventional high-load (HL) resistance training. METHODS: N = 40 male participants were randomly and concealed allocated to one of two groups: LL-BFR training (20-35% one-repetition maximum/1RM) or HL training (70-85% 1RM). The training was completed three times per week

Bacterial and metabolic phenotypes associated with inadequate response to ursodeoxycholic acid treatment in primary biliary cholangitis.

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) as first-line treatment. Poor response to UDCA is associated with a higher risk of progressing to cirrhosis, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. UDCA modulates the composition of primary and bacterial-derived bile acids (BAs). We characterized the phenotypic response to UDCA based on BA and bacterial profiles of PBC patients treated with UDCA. Patients from the UK-PBC cohort (n = 419) treated with UDCA for a minimum of 12-months were assessed using the Barcelona dynamic response cri
