Reliability and validity of Champion's Health Belief Model Scale for breast cancer screening among Malaysian women.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Malaysian women, and the use of breast self-examination (BSE), clinical breast examination (CBE) and mammography remain low in Malaysia. Therefore, there is a need to develop a valid and reliable tool to measure the beliefs that influence breast cancer screening practices. The Champion's Health Belief Model Scale (CHBMS) is a valid and reliable tool to measure beliefs about breast cancer and screening methods in the Western culture. The purpose of this study was to translate the use of CHBMS into the Malaysian context and val

Interpreting diabetes mellitus: differences between patient and provider models of disease and their implications for clinical practice.

Current medical literature suggests that Type 2 diabetes mellitus can be controlled by diet and hypoglycemic agents or diet and insulin therapy. Nevertheless, adhering to a low glucose dietary regimen remains problematic for a majority of patients, and management of the disease is an ongoing source of frustration for physicians and other providers. While calling for more research on the physician's experience of treating chronic conditions like diabetes, the authors argue that much of the current frustration stems from the different frames or explanatory models that physicians and patients use

Psychologists' Diagnostic Accuracy and Treatment Recommendations for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating condition prevalent in up to 2.3% of the population, yet obsessive-compulsive symptoms are commonly misidentified by mental health professionals, adversely impacting treatment recommendations. This study examined OCD misidentification rates across two different types of obsessions, the influence of misidentification on treatment recommendation, and attitudes associated with clinicians' decisions surrounding the diagnosis of OCD and treatment recommendations in a sample of 110 licensed psychologists. Results showed that over one-third (35.0%

The design and evaluation of a bone health teaching module for secondary school students in NSW, Australia.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The growing prevalence of osteoporosis requires preventative management starting from an early age as peak bone mass is typically reached by age 30. However, current Australian adolescents are not adequately addressing key osteoprotective factors. Alarmingly, around 17% have insufficient vitamin D levels, 55% consume insufficient dietary calcium, and 79% are insufficiently active. Addressing these insufficiencies via bone health education and promoting healthier lifestyle choices are crucial to mitigate the risk of osteoporosis later in life. METHODS: A mixed methods study wa

Application of the Health Belief Model (HBM) to Explore the Quality of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Education in Sri Lanka.

Many countries, including Sri Lanka, are taking steps to integrate sex education into their educational systems to combat child abuse. However, this effort is often met with skepticism in Asian nations, including Sri Lanka. This study takes a unique approach by applying the criteria of the health belief model to predict the quality of reproductive health (SRH) education in Sri Lanka, offering a fresh perspective on this issue. A positive philosophical framework and a deductive approach have been employed to provide justification for the underlying assumptions. A structured questionnaire was us
