Association between irritable bowel syndrome and micronutrients: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly prevalent disorder of gut brain interaction with a multifactorial etiology. Food trigger avoidance is common among individuals with IBS and exclusion diets are gaining popularity. However, recent guidelines on IBS management cautioned regarding the use of unsupervised dietary therapy with concerns of development of poor eating habits and even nutritional deficiencies. We aimed to review the available literature on the effect of habitual and exclusion diets on micronutrient status as well as the role of micronutrient supplementation

Dynamic gene expression changes in response to micronutrient, macronutrient, and multiple stress exposures in soybean.

Preserving crop yield is critical for US soybean production and the global economy. Crop species have been selected for increased yield for thousands of years with individual lines selected for improved performance in unique environments, constraints not experienced by model species such as Arabidopsis. This selection likely resulted in novel stress adaptations, unique to crop species. Given that iron deficiency is a perennial problem in the soybean growing regions of the USA and phosphate deficiency looms as a limitation to global agricultural production, nutrient stress studies in crop speci

Vitamin D and hematinic deficiencies in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) represents a dysfunction in focal inflammatory processes. With the emerging anti-inflammatory roles of vitamin D (VD), we wanted to investigate the association between the onset and severity of RAS and serum VD level. METHODS: Fifty-two RAS cases and sex and age-matched controls were screened for serum iron, B12, folic acid, VD and red cell indices. Variables were compared using independent samples t test and chi square. Binary logistic regression was used to assess the association between the severity of RAS and various hematinic deficiencies.

Celiac Disease: Ten Things That Every Gastroenterologist Should Know.

There are 10 things that all gastroenterologists should know about celiac disease (CD). (1) The immunoglobulin A tissue transglutaminase is the single best serologic test to use for the detection of CD. (2) CD can be recognized endoscopically, and water immersion enhances villi detection, although a normal endoscopic appearance does not preclude the diagnosis. (3) It is recommended that 4 biopsies be taken from the second part of the duodenum and 2 bulb biopsies be taken at the 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock positions to maximize the sensitivity for histologic confirmation of CD. (4) Consider serolo

Influence of copper on early development: prenatal and postnatal considerations.

Copper (Cu) is an essential nutrient whose requirement is increased during pregnancy and lactation. These represent times of critical growth and development, and the fetus and neonate are particularly vulnerable to deficiencies of this nutrient. Genetic mutations that predispose the offspring to inadequate stores of Cu can be life threatening as is observed in children with Menkes disease. During the last decade, severe Cu deficiency, once thought to be a rare condition, has been reported in the literature at an increasing frequency. Secondary Cu deficiencies can be induced by a variety of way

From harvest to health: challenges for developing biofortified staple foods and determining their impact on micronutrient status.

BACKGROUND: The use of conventional breeding techniques and biotechnology to improve the micronutrient quality of staple crops is a new strategy to address micronutrient deficiencies in developing countries. This strategy, referred to as "biofortification," is being developed and implemented through the international alliance of HarvestPlus to improve iron, zinc, and vitamin A status in low-income populations. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to review the challenges faced by nutritionists to determine and demonstrate the ability of biofortified crops to have an impact on the nutriti

Efficacy trials of a micronutrient dietary supplement in schoolchildren and pregnant women in Tanzania.

Traditionally, the main strategies used to control micronutrient deficiencies have been food diversification, consumption of medicinal supplements, and food fortification. In Tanzania, we conducted efficacy trials using a dietary supplement as a fourth approach. These were randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy trials conducted separately first in children and later in pregnant women. The dietary supplement was a powder used to prepare an orange-flavored beverage. In the school trial, children consumed 25 g per school day attended. In the pregnancy trial, women consumed the cont

Intact FGF23 and Markers of Iron Homeostasis, Inflammation, and Bone Mineral Metabolism in Acute Pediatric Infections.

We intend to evaluate the association of intact Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (i-FGF23), a phosphaturic hormone that contributes to anemia of inflammation, with markers of iron homeostasis, inflammation, and bone mineral metabolism in acute pediatric infections. Seventy-nine children, aged 1 month-13 years, out of which forty-two were males and thirty-seven females, participated in this study. Children with diseases and nutrient deficiencies causing anemia were excluded. Twenty-six patients had bacterial infections, twenty-six had viral infections, and twenty-seven children served as healthy con

Multiple Indicators of Undernutrition, Infection, and Inflammation in Lactating Women Are Associated with Maternal Iron Status and Infant Anthropometry in Panama: The MINDI Cohort.

Maternal infections, nutrient deficiencies, and inflammation (MINDI) co-exist in lactating indigenous women in Panama, but their impact on maternal iron status and infant growth is unknown. For this secondary analysis of cross-sectional data of lactating mothers from our MINDI cohort, we investigated associations of MINDI variables with maternal anemia, elevated serum transferrin receptor (sTfR), low serum iron, hepcidin, ferritin, and infant weight-for-age (WAZ), length-for-age (LAZ), and head-circumference-for-age (HCAZ) Z-scores in 99 mother-infant dyads. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with speech apraxia, predominant upper motor neuron signs, and prominent iron accumulation in the frontal operculum and precentral gyrus.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease; transactivation response DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) and iron accumulation are supposed to play a crucial role in the pathomechanism of the disease. Here, we report an unusual case of a patient with ALS who presented with speech apraxia as an initial symptom and upper motor neuron deficiencies. In the early clinical stages, single-photon emission computed tomography visualized focal hypoperfusion of the right frontal operculum, and magnetic resonance imaging identified a hypointense area along the fronta

Influence of phlebotomy treatment on abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary function in genetic hemochromatosis.

To test the hypothesis that deficiencies in hypothalamic-pituitary function in genetic hemochromatosis result from cellular injury by iron deposits, we conducted provocative tests in 11 men with genetic hemochromatosis before and after iron depletion by serial phlebotomy and in 10 control subjects. We gave combination intravenous injections of insulin (0.15 U/kg), luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH, 100 micrograms), and thyrotropin releasing hormone (400 micrograms) and then measured plasma glucose, growth hormone, corticosteroids, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, pr

Macrophage iron overload promotes osteoporosis via Cxcl3- and Cxcl7-mediated paracrine signaling in ovariectomized mice.

BACKGROUND: Iron is an essential element for fundamental biological processes, but excess iron contributes to toxicity and is associated with osteoporosis in iron-overload disorders. Although iron chelators are routinely used to treat hematologic iron-overload conditions, emerging evidence suggests their potential applicability in osteoporosis treatment. METHOD: Iron chelators were administered to ovariectomized (OVX) mice to investigate the relationship between iron overload and osteoporosis. Iron accumulation in macrophages was demonstrated through iron and F4/80 co-staining. We analyzed si

The Use of Spectral Imaging to Follow the Iron and pH-Dependent Accumulation of Fluorescent Coumarins.

Plants challenged with iron deficiency produce in their roots and secrete into the rhizosphere several small molecules named coumarins that derive from the phenylpropanoid pathway. Coumarins are biosynthesized in different root cell types and transported to the root epidermis prior to their secretion in the surrounding media. Taking advantage of the natural fluorescence of most coumarins glycosides when exposed to UV light, we developed a method to uncover their individual cellular localization and accumulation. This approach couples spectral imaging acquisition and linear unmixing analysis. I

Change of iron content in brain regions after intravenous iron therapy in restless legs syndrome: quantitative susceptibility mapping study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The pathomechanism of restless legs syndrome (RLS) is related to brain iron deficiency and iron therapy is effective for RLS; however, the effect of iron therapy on human brain iron state has never been studied with magnetic resonance imaging. This study aimed to investigate the change of brain iron concentrations in patients with RLS after intravenous iron therapy using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). METHODS: We enrolled 31 RLS patients and 20 healthy controls. All participants underwent initial baseline (t0) assessment using brain magnetic resonance imaging, se

Evaluation of Serum Iron Profile in Patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Approximately 10.0% of tuberculosis (TB) Infected individuals develop clinical disease in the absence of immune suppression suggests that individual factors may play a role in the response to infection. Body's immune function is boosted by micronutrient and also plays a major role in response to tubercular infection. Someone, may argue that cell mediated immunity is compromised in iron deficiency before anemia becomes apparent. This descriptive observational study intended to assess serum iron profile in patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. This study included 56 newly diagnosed spu

[Preoperative anemia in patients with rheumatic diseases].

A preoperative anemia is an independent risk factor for the occurrence of complications during and after surgical interventions. It is associated with an increased length of hospital stay, higher mortality and an increased use of blood transfusions. Anemia affects some 30-70% of patients suffering from inflammatory rheumatic diseases, mostly caused by iron deficiency and/or chronic inflammation. The possibilities to treat anemia in rheumatic patients were extremely limited for a long period of time as older studies showed life-threatening side effects, the need of high doses of iron supplement

Effect of postpartum anaemia on maternal health-related quality of life: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum anaemia remains a persistent and severe public health issue in many parts of the world. Studies have reported mixed findings on the effects of anaemia during the postpartum period on maternal health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We conducted this systematic review to summarise available evidence to inform public health practitioners on whether 1) anaemia negatively impact maternal health-related quality of life and 2) whether iron supplementation in anaemic women can improve maternal HRQoL during the postpartum period. METHODS: This review's protocol was registered o
