Multiomics analysis reveals a substantial decrease in nanoplastics uptake and associated impacts by nano zinc oxide in fragrant rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Nanoplastics (NPs) have emerged as global environmental pollutants with concerning implications for sustainable agriculture. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of NPs toxicity and devising strategies to mitigate their impact is crucial for crop growth and development. Here, we investigated the nanoparticles of zinc oxide (nZnO) to mitigate the adverse effects of 80 nm NPs on fragrant rice. Our results showed that optimized nZnO (25 mg L-1) concentration rescued root length and structural deficits by improving oxidative stress response, antioxidant defense mechanism and balanced nutrient l

The Relationship of Preterm and Small for Gestational Age with Child Cognition During School-Age Years.

BACKGROUND: Children born preterm and/or small for gestational age (SGA) are at increased risk of poor cognitive outcomes, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the cognitive and academic deficits during the school-age years in children born preterm or SGA compared with those in children born term adequate for gestational age (AGA) in rural Vietnam. METHODS: Children born to women in a preconception micronutrient supplementation trial in Vietnam were classified into 3 groups: preterm AGA (n =138), term SGA (n =169), and term AGA (n =

Associations between gestational weight gain under different guidelines and adverse birth outcomes: A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial in rural western China.

Several gestational weight gain (GWG) guidelines have been established based on monocenter or multicenter researches. We aimed to examine the associations between categories of GWG under the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendation guideline, the Chinese National Health Commission (NHC) guideline, and weight-gain-for-gestational-age z-scores derived from the INTERGROWTH-21st Project and adverse birth outcomes. We used data from an antenatal micronutrient supplementation trial in rural western China between 2002 and 2006. Maternal weekly average GWG during the second and third trimesters was

Iron affects the sphere-forming ability of ovarian cancer cells in non-adherent culture conditions.

Introduction: Detachment from the extracellular matrix (ECM) is the first step of the metastatic cascade. It is a regulated process involving interaction between tumor cells and tumor microenvironment (TME). Iron is a key micronutrient within the TME. Here, we explored the role of iron in the ability of ovarian cancer cells to successfully detach from the ECM. Methods: HEY and PEO1 ovarian cancer cells were grown in 3D conditions. To mimic an iron rich TME, culture media were supplemented with 100 μM Fe3+. Cell mortality was evaluated by cytofluorimetric assay. The invasive potential of tumor

Foliar co-application of zinc oxide and copper oxide nanoparticles promotes phytochemicals and essential oil production in dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica).

Individual nanoparticle application has been documented to promote plant production; however, whether co-application of two nanoparticles (NPs) is more sustainable and significantly promotes plant production is unclear. Herein, foliar co-applications of two NPs or their conventional fertilizer forms on the growth, micronutrient (copper and zinc) enrichment, primary productivity, and essential oil (EO) production in a medicinal annual, dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.), were investigated. Treatments included 1:1 ratio of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs):copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs

Comparative Assessment of Serum Selenium Status in HIV-Infected and Non-infected Children: A Pilot Study in a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria.

Background Selenium is an essential micronutrient that plays a crucial role in a wide range of physiological processes, including immune responses. Selenium deficiency has been recognized as an associated factor in the progression of HIV to advanced HIV disease and/or mortality. Although selenium supplementation has been shown to reduce hospitalizations and improve cellular immunity, the evidence remains mixed. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of selenium deficiency and its relationship with HIV disease markers in HIV-infected children at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Met

Evidence-based antenatal interventions to reduce the incidence of small vulnerable newborns and their associated poor outcomes.

A package of care for all pregnant women within eight scheduled antenatal care contacts is recommended by WHO. Some interventions for reducing and managing the outcomes for small vulnerable newborns (SVNs) exist within the WHO package and need to be more fully implemented, but additional effective measures are needed. We summarise evidence-based antenatal and intrapartum interventions (up to and including clamping the umbilical cord) to prevent vulnerable births or improve outcomes, informed by systematic reviews. We estimate, using the Lives Saved Tool, that eight proven preventive interventi

Iron-Deficiency in Atopic Diseases: Innate Immune Priming by Allergens and Siderophores.

Although iron is one of the most abundant elements on earth, about a third of the world's population are affected by iron deficiency. Main drivers of iron deficiency are beside the chronic lack of dietary iron, a hampered uptake machinery as a result of immune activation. Macrophages are the principal cells distributing iron in the human body with their iron restriction skewing these cells to a more pro-inflammatory state. Consequently, iron deficiency has a pronounced impact on immune cells, favoring Th2-cell survival, immunoglobulin class switching and primes mast cells for degranulation. Ir

Novel iron chelator SK4 demonstrates cytotoxicity in a range of tumour derived cell lines.

Iron is an essential micronutrient due to its involvement in many cellular processes including DNA replication and OXPHOS. Tumors overexpress iron metabolism linked proteins which allow for iron accumulation driving high levels of proliferation. Our group has designed novel iron chelator SK4 which targets cancer's "iron addiction." SK4 comprises of two key moieties: an iron chelation moiety responsible for cytotoxicity and an amino acid moiety which allows entry through amino acid transporter LAT1. We selected LAT1 as a route of entry as it is commonly overexpressed in malignant tumors. SK4 ha

Understanding G × E Interaction for Nutritional and Antinutritional Factors in a Diverse Panel of Vigna stipulacea (Lam.) Kuntz Germplasm Tested Over the Locations.

Micronutrient malnutrition or hidden hunger is a serious challenge toward societal well-being. Vigna stipulacea (Lam.) Kuntz (known locally as Minni payaru), is an underutilized legume that has the potential to be a global food legume due to its rich nutrient profile. In the present study, 99 accessions of V. stipulacea were tested for iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), protein, and phytate concentrations over two locations for appraisal of stable nutrient-rich sources. Analysis of variance revealed significant effects of genotype for all the traits over both locations. Fe concentration range

Early vs late initiation of sodium glycerophosphate: Impact on hypophosphatemia in preterm infants <32 weeks.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Early electrolyte and mineral imbalances have emerged as a conspicuous problem in very preterm babies since the revision of nutrition guidelines and the eventual implementation of early aggressive parenteral nutrition (PN). We opted to carry out a study with the introduction of phosphorus as sodium glycerophosphate in PN from the first day onward to reveal the impact on serum phosphorus and calcium levels following the surge in the incidence of hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia. METHODS: In this single-center, prospective, observational cohort study, inborn babies <32 gest

Interventions to reduce preterm birth and stillbirth, and improve outcomes for babies born preterm in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Reducing preterm birth and stillbirth and improving outcomes for babies born too soon is essential to reduce under-5 mortality globally. In the context of a rapidly evolving evidence base and problems with extrapolating efficacy data from high- to low-income settings, an assessment of the evidence for maternal and newborn interventions specific to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is required. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was done. We included all studies performed in LMICs since the Every Newborn Action Plan, between 2013 - 2018, which reported on interve

Does socio-economic inequality exist in micro-nutrients supplementation among children aged 6-59 months in India? Evidence from National Family Health Survey 2005-06 and 2015-16.

BACKGROUND: Globally, about 25% of children suffer from subclinical vitamin A deficiency (VAD), and approximately 300 million children globally had anemia as per 2011 estimates. Micronutrient deficiencies are generally referred to as "hidden hunger" because these deficiencies developed gradually. The present study determines the socio-economic inequalities in vitamin A supplementation (VAS) and Iron supplementation (IS) among children aged 6-59 months in India and to estimate the change in the percent contribution of different socio-economic correlates for such inequality from 2005 to 06 to 20

Efficacy of an iron-fortified infant cereal to reduce the risk of iron deficiency anemia in young children in East Cameroon.

Complementary foods in Africa are often poor sources of bioavailable iron. We assessed the efficacy of iron-fortified wheat-based infant cereal (IC) to reduce the risk of iron deficiency anemia in children aged 18-59 months in Cameroon. A 6-month double-blind, cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2017 among anemic (hemoglobin 7-11 g/dl) but otherwise healthy children. In conjunction with usual diet, children received two 50 g servings/day of a standard, micronutrient-fortified IC (providing 3.75 mg iron/serving; n = 106) or the same IC without iron fortification (n = 99). Joint association of vitamins D and K status with long-term outcomes in stable kidney transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) experience substantial survival benefit compared with dialysis patients. However, their mortality and graft failure risk remain high. KTRs are often low in micronutrient status, including vitamins D and K. We investigated the association of both vitamins D and K status, and vitamin D treatment with all-cause mortality and death-censored graft failure. METHODS: We studied 461 KTRs from a single-centre study at median 6.1 years after transplantation. At baseline, vitamins D and K concentrations were measured by 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and de

Factors affecting low coverage of the vitamin A supplementation program among young children admitted in an urban diarrheal treatment facility in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is one of the most prevalent micronutrient deficiencies in the world. About 2% of all deaths among children under five years of age (U-5) are attributable to VAD. Currently evidence-based knowledge is grossly lacking about the factors associated with low coverage of VAS. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the factors affecting low coverage of the vitamin A supplementation program among the young children admitted to a diarrheal hospital. METHODS: We extracted data from the Diarrhoeal Diseases Surveillance System (DDSS) on children aged 12-59 months

Why do we know so little about return to work after carpal tunnel release?

AIMS: Bariatric surgery induces several micronutrient deficiencies that require supplementation. For iron, parenteral infusions are usually preferred over oral supplementation. Ferric carboxymaltose infusion has been associated with hypophosphataemia, mostly transient and asymptomatic. However, in some cases, ferric carboxymaltose-induced hypophosphataemia may persist for weeks to months and may induce muscle weakness, osteomalacia and bone fractures. The aim of this study was to identify possible predictors of a clinically relevant decrease in serum phosphate after ferric carboxymaltose infus
