It is shown by transmission electron-microscopy that the first structural change in rats, following a dose of aspirin, is to the basement membrane of the endothelial cell of the capillary and post-capillary venule. This leads to the breakdown of small blood vessels before any other cytolytic effect. This is a focal effect and it is proposed that the erosion develops as an ischaemic infarct.

A 48-year-old male presented with the nephrotic syndrome 3 years after resection and irradiation of a thymoma. Renal biopsy revealed membranous glomerulonephritis by electron microscopy. IgA, IgG, and C3 deposition were present in the glomerular basement membrane by immunofluorescence. There was no evidence of other autoimmune diseases or causes of the membranous glomerulonephritis. He has continued to have proteinuria and edema 1 year later.

The authors report a case of a 4-year-old child whose death resulted from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and giant-cell pneumonia. Typical lung tumorlets were occasionally observed. On electron microscopy study it was possible to demonstrate a large number of neurosecretory granules in the tumorlet's cells, identical to those present in Kulchitsky's cells. These studies suggest the occurrence of an abnormal immunitary process.

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in the cloacal coprodeum of two red-lored parrots (Amazona autumnalis). The parasites were adhered to the microvillus border of epithelial cells and their presence was associated with loss and atrophy of microvilli. Merozoites, trophozoites, gametes, and oocytes were identified with light and transmission electron microscopy. The coprodeal epithelium was hyperplastic and the lamina propria was infiltrated with moderate numbers of heterophils and lymphocytes.

Unusual perinuclear inclusions in pancreatic duct cells were observed by electron microscopy in 23 diabetic pancreases, in nine pancreases with islet hyperplasia, and in 10 of 27 pancreases without islet pathology. The origin and significance of the perinuclear inclusions could not be determined, but it is suggested that they may be of viral origin or may represent a cellular response to an unknown stimulus.

Immunoblasts of the B-cell line and immunoblasts of the T-cell line have very similar light-microscopic appearances but different immunologic compositions. The immunoblasts of a patient with angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia were found to bear surface immunoglobulin and complement receptor. They lacked receptor for cytophilic antibody. Surface villous projections were demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. These features strongly indicate their B-cell origin.

Thin sections of exponentially growing and stationary-phase cells of L. fermentum from thiamine sufficient and thiamine deficient media were studied by electron microscopy. Compared to the exponential-phase cells the stationary-phase cells from both types of media had thicker cell walls and cross walls and fewer and smaller granules of storage material. Exponential-phase, thiamine deficient cells had rather thin cell walls and small mesosomes.

Virus particles were detected by electron microscopy in three papillary cancers of the human renal pelvis. Similar particles were seen in cells from all three tumors in primary culture. An RNA virus was isolated from these tumors. The serum of tumor patients contains neutralizing antibodies against virus isolated from two of the tumors. Initial studies suggest that this agent is not a known human RNA virus.

Fifteen women with lichen sclerosus (LS) of the vulva were treated for 3 months with 0.6 mg/kg of etretinate. Two patients older than age 50 years had minimal amyloidosis in association with the nephrotic syndrome. Extended-wear contact lenses (EWCL) are being used increasingly for the correction of aphakia in infants, but there is a lack of data documenting their effects on the corneas of young children.
