Craving money? Evidence from the laboratory and the field.

Continuing to gamble despite harmful consequences has plagued human life in many ways, from loss-chasing in problem gamblers to reckless investing during stock market bubbles. Here, we propose that these anomalies in human behavior can sometimes reflect Pavlovian perturbations on instrumental behavior. To show this, we combined key elements of Pavlovian psychology literature and standard economic theory into a single model. In it, when a gambling cue such as a gaming machine or a financial asset repeatedly delivers a good outcome, the agent may start engaging with the cue even when the expecte

Secret romantic relationships: consequences for personal and relational well-being.

Previous research on romantic secrecy found that hiding one's relationship from others predicted lower levels of relationship quality. The present research built on this work by exploring the potential consequences of relationship concealment on partners' commitment level and personal health. Study 1 found that greater secrecy was associated with reduced commitment to one's relationship, lower self-esteem, and more reported health symptoms. Study 2 tested a theoretical model of the effects of secrecy using structural equation modeling. This model was well supported and suggests that romantic s

A measurement model of perinatal stressors: identifying risk for postnatal emotional distress in mothers of high-risk infants.

A measurement model of perinatal stressors was first evaluated for reliability and then used to identify risk factors for postnatal emotional distress in high-risk mothers. In Study 1, six measures (gestational age of the baby, birthweight, length of the baby's hospitalization, a postnatal complications rating for the infant, and Apgar scores at 1 and 5 min) were obtained from chart reviews of preterm births at two different hospitals. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the six measures could be accounted for by three factors: (a) Infant Maturity, (b) Apgar Ratings, and (c) Complicatio

Childhood emotional abuse and eating psychopathology.

The potential role of childhood emotional abuse (CEA) in the etiology and maintenance of eating psychopathology is reviewed. While childhood sexual and physical abuse have been hypothesized as risk factors in multifactorial models of eating disorders, a role for CEA has only recently been considered. Initial findings demonstrate a phenomenological link between CEA and eating psychopathology, and suggest that this association might be different to the links for other forms of trauma (i.e., CEA may have a relationship with a broader range of eating symptoms than sexual and physical abuse). Howev

A mediational model of the impact of marital conflict on adolescent adjustment in intact and divorced families: the role of disrupted parenting.

The present study was concerned with the development and testing of a structural equation model wherein the relation of interparental conflict to the adjustment problems of young adolescents is mediated through its impact on 3 aspects of parenting behavior: lax control, psychological control, and parental rejection/withdrawal. The model was tested separately on a sample of 46 young adolescents from intact families and a group of 51 adolescents from recently divorced families. The hypothesis that most of the relation between martial conflict and adolescent adjustment problems could be explained

Does Sertraline Affect Hypothalamic Food Intake Peptides in the Rat Experimental Model of Chronic Mild Stress-Induced Depression?

Depression is a chronic, recurrent and life-threatening disease affecting approximately 15% of the world population. Depression is responsible for neuropathologies like decreased neurogenesis and increased dendritic atrophy. Antidepressant treatments increase hippocampal neurogenesis and neurotrophic factor expression. Based on this information, it was aimed to investigate effect of sertraline on depression in rats with chronic mild stress (CMS) model and to determine how it affects cell proliferation and hypothalamic peptide levels in hypothalamus. 56 adult male Wistar albino; control, depres

Personality correlates of pathological gambling derived from Big Three and Big Five personality models.

Personality traits have proved to be consistent and important factors in a variety of externalizing behaviors including addiction, aggression, and antisocial behavior. Given the comorbidity of these behaviors with pathological gambling (PG), it is important to test the degree to which PG shares these trait correlates. In a large community sample of regular gamblers (N=354; 111 with diagnoses of pathological gambling), the relations between measures of two major models of personality - Big Three and Big Five - were examined in relation to PG symptoms derived from a semi-structured diagnostic in

Factors influencing students' usage of school bus seat belts: an empirical analysis of the Alabama pilot project.

The Alabama State Department of Education and the Governor's Study Group on School Bus Seat Belts authorized and funded a research project to investigate the effects of lap-shoulder seat belts on Alabama school buses. This article performs an empirical analysis to address an important component of the study - factors that impact students' decisions about wearing seat belts or not on school buses. Discrete choice modeling framework is applied to quantify relative influences of various factors. To obtain the disaggregate level information on individual student's characteristics and trip properti

A 'sticky' interhemispheric switch in bipolar disorder?

Despite years of research into bipolar disorder (manic depression), its underlying pathophysiology remains elusive. It is widely acknowledged that the disorder is strongly heritable, but the genetics are complex with less than full concordance in monozygotic twins and at least four susceptibility loci identified. We propose that bipolar disorder is the result of a genetic propensity for slow interhemispheric switching mechanisms that become 'stuck' in one or the other state. Because slow switches are also 'sticky' when compared with fast switches, the clinical manifestations of bipolar disorde

Autism, Asperger's syndrome and the Crick-Mitchison theory of the biological function of REM sleep.

Autism, Asperger's syndrome and other autistic syndromes are developmental brain disorders that cause serious impairments in communication, social interaction, empathy, mood and play. In addition to such deficits, the autistic syndromes involve pathologically high levels of repetitive, stereotypic, ritualistic, compulsive or obsessive behavior, together with extreme resistance to change. According to the Crick-Mitchison theory of the biological function of rapid eye movement sleep, normal brain development in the fetus and infant depends on undisrupted function of a 'reverse learning' mechanis

Memory, benzodiazepines, and anxiety: integration of theoretical and clinical perspectives.

The benzodiazepines have been reported to cause anterograde amnestic effects. These impairments are likely mediated through the GABAA receptor complex, which contains the benzodiazepine receptor binding site. This GABAA receptor site is also believed to be the locus of the anxiolytic effects of the drugs as well, and recent research findings suggest that the anxiolytic and amnestic properties of the benzodiazepines may be functionally linked. Normal human memory function is extremely complex and requires the smooth integration of multiple aspects of cognition. On the basis of neuropsychologica

Sustained peripheral vasoconstriction while working in continuous intense noise.

The study examined the effects of exposure to continuous noise on pulse volume (vasoconstriction) and rate, as well as four-choice serial reaction time. There were 2 separate groups of 12 subjects that performed the 20-min task during simultaneous monitoring of their physiological response to continuous 93 dBA white noise or 70 dBA quiet control conditions. Pulse volume showed marked reduction, implying increased arousal, in the first 3-min exposure to noise. Although some habituation of the vasoconstriction response then occurred, pulse volume continued to remain significantly higher than in

Critical interval hypotheses for depression.

Two chronobiologic models are presented for the etiology of depression. The internal coincidence model suggests that a phase advance of the strong oscillator in reference to the weak oscillator causes depression. An external coincidence model suggests that depression is caused when the light/dark cycle or photoperiod provides too little illumination during a critical photosensitive interval, which might in turn occur early due to a phase advance. Thus, depression might be treated by drugs or other manipulations which delay the phase of internal circadian rhythms. Depression might also be treat

Effects of prenatal psychotherapies and psychosocial interventions on depressive symptoms, anxious symptoms and stress: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal psychological disorders have a significant impact on maternal and neonatal health. While many psychotherapies and psychosocial interventions have been developed and empirically evaluated for the management of perinatal psychological symptoms, the efficacy of these interventions and the most effective intervention modality remain inconclusive. AIM: To assess and compare the efficacy of various perinatal psychotherapies and psychosocial interventions for depressive symptoms, anxious symptoms and stress through a comprehensive systematic review with network meta-analysis.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as an Adjunct Therapy for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication associated with substantial maternal and fetal health risks. Apart from metabolic disturbances, a confirmed GDM diagnosis often elicits anxiety, depression, and diabetes-specific distress, which may activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, exacerbate insulin resistance, and undermine glycemic regulation, creating a psychometabolic vicious cycle. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based intervention that facilitates emotional regulation and boosts stress resilience. Despite it

Adult attachment styles and psychological birth trauma symptoms: A cross-sectional survey of postpartum women in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Psychological birth trauma (PBT) has been proposed as a broader construct encompassing childbirth-related psychological distress, including but not limited to symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder. Attachment theory suggests that adult attachment dimensions are associated with differences in threat appraisal, affect regulation, and help-seeking; however, their relationship with childbirth-related trauma symptoms and birth satisfaction remains unclear. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 940 postpartum women in Australia (≤24 months postpartu

Barriers and facilitators to detoxification from opioid substitution treatment: A mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite the well-documented benefits of opioid substitution treatment (OST) in treating opioid dependence (OD), many people diagnosed with OD desire to live a drug-free life. The transition to abstinence involves detoxification: a gradual dose reduction of OST to zero milligrams. Despite these aspirations, only a minority of patients undertake detoxification, and successful completion remains limited. This mixed-methods systematic review aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators to detoxification from OST, to help provide a better understanding of what can be done to

The COMPASS-MS Study on Implementing Digital Assessment and Treatment for Psychological Distress in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis: Protocol for a Real-World Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid anxiety and depression in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are common, conferring a greater risk of poorer outcomes and increased health care costs. Few MS services include scalable treatment pathways for psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct a real-world longitudinal study evaluating the implementation and potential effectiveness of an integrated pathway involving digital screening for psychological distress and COMPASS-MS, a therapist-guided digital cognitive behavioral therapy tailored to the challenges of living with MS. METHODS: This is

Factors associated with mental health stigma among teachers and caregivers of primary school children in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with around 55% aged below 18 years. Approximately 23% of Ugandan youths are struggling with mental disorders. Despite the high prevalence of mental disorders, the existing stigma surrounding mental health may discourage individuals from seeking help, resulting in untreated conditions that may worsen over time. Examining the factors associated with stigma is crucial for understanding specific target areas to reduce its impact and prevent stigma. The current paper examines factors associated with mental health stigma among tea
