"Global" cardiac atherosclerotic burden assessed by artificial intelligence-based versus manual segmentation in 18F-sodium fluoride PET/CT scans: Head-to-head comparison.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is known to provide effective means to accelerate and facilitate clinical and research processes. So in this study it was aimed to compare a AI-based method for cardiac segmentation in positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans with manual segmentation to assess global cardiac atherosclerosis burden. METHODS: A trained convolutional neural network (CNN) was used for cardiac segmentation in 18F-sodium fluoride PET/CT scans of 29 healthy volunteers and 20 angina pectoris patients and compared with manual segmentation. Parameters for

Classification of gastric emptying and orocaecal transit through artificial neural networks.

Classical quantification of gastric emptying (GE) and orocaecal transit (OCT) based on half-life time T$ _{50} $, mean gastric emptying time (MGET), orocaecal transit time (OCTT) or mean caecum arrival time (MCAT) can lead to misconceptions when analyzing irregularly or noisy data. We show that this is the case for gastrointestinal transit of control and of diabetic rats. Addressing this limitation, we present an artificial neural network (ANN) as an alternative tool capable of discriminating between control and diabetic rats through GE and OCT analysis. Our data were obtained via biological e

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation prediction based on morphological variant P-wave analysis with wideband ECG and deep learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most frequent asymptomatic arrhythmias associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Identifying the susceptibility to AF based on routine or continuous ECG recording is of considerable interest. Despite several P-wave characteristics and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) linked to AF onset, neither factor has offered accurate predictability. We propose a deep learning enabled method for AF risk prediction. METHODS: We develop a novel MVPNet to predict the upcoming onset of paroxysmal AF. MVPNet combines wavelet-base

Intrinsic Network Brain Dysfunction Correlates With Temporal Complexity in Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder.

Background: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) are the two severe subtypes of anxiety disorders (ADs), which are similar in clinical manifestation, pathogenesis, and treatment. Earlier studies have taken a whole-brain perspective on GAD and PD in the assumption that intrinsic fluctuations are static throughout the entire scan. However, it has recently been suggested that the dynamic alternations in functional connectivity (FC) may reflect the changes in macroscopic neural activity patterns underlying the critical aspects of cognition and behavior, and thus may act as bi

TractLearn: A geodesic learning framework for quantitative analysis of brain bundles.

Deep learning-based convolutional neural networks have recently proved their efficiency in providing fast segmentation of major brain fascicles structures, based on diffusion-weighted imaging. The quantitative analysis of brain fascicles then relies on metrics either coming from the tractography process itself or from each voxel along the bundle. Statistical detection of abnormal voxels in the context of disease usually relies on univariate and multivariate statistics models, such as the General Linear Model (GLM). Yet in the case of high-dimensional low sample size data, the GLM often implies

Analysis of the Impact of Medical Features and Risk Prediction of Acute Kidney Injury for Critical Patients Using Temporal Electronic Health Record Data With Attention-Based Neural Network.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most severe consequences of kidney injury, and it will also cause or aggravate the complications by the fast decline of kidney excretory function. Accurate AKI prediction, including the AKI case, AKI stage, and AKI onset time interval, can provide adequate support for effective interventions. Besides, discovering how the medical features affect the AKI result may also provide supporting information for disease treatment. An attention-based temporal neural network approach was employed in this study for AKI prediction and for the analysis of the impact of

Genetic variations influence brain changes in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological and neurodevelopmental childhood-onset disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattentiveness, impulsiveness, restlessness, and hyperactivity. These symptoms may continue in 55-66% of cases from childhood into adulthood. Even though the precise etiology of ADHD is not fully understood, it is considered as a multifactorial and heterogeneous disorder with several contributing factors such as heritability, auxiliary to neurodevelopmental issues, severe brain injuries, neuroinflammation, consanguineous marriages, prematur

Single-cell and ensemble activity of lumbar intermediate and ventral horn interneurons in the spinal air-stepping cat.

We explored the relationship between population interneuronal network activation and motor output in the adult, in vivo, air-stepping, spinal cat. By simultaneously measuring the activity of large numbers of spinal interneurons, we explored ensembles of coherently firing interneurons and their relation to motor output. In addition, the networks were analyzed in relation to their spatial distribution along the lumbar enlargement for evidence of localized groups driving particular phases of the locomotor step cycle. We simultaneously recorded hindlimb EMG activity during stepping and extracellul

A Novel Convolutional Neural Network for the Diagnosis and Classification of Rosacea: Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease with variable clinical presentations, including transient flushing, fixed erythema, papules, pustules, and phymatous changes on the central face. Owing to the diversity in the clinical manifestations of rosacea, the lack of objective biochemical examinations, and nonspecificity in histopathological findings, accurate identification of rosacea is a big challenge. Artificial intelligence has emerged as a potential tool in the identification and evaluation of some skin diseases such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and psoriasis. OBJECTIVE:

Dynamic analysis of 4E-BP1 phosphorylation in neurons with Tsc2 or Depdc5 knockout.

TSC1 or TSC2 mutations cause Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), and lead to mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) hyperactivation evidenced by hyperphosphorylation of ribosomal S6 protein and 4-elongation factor binding protein 1 (4E-BP1). Amino acid (AA) levels modulate mTOR-dependent S6 and 4E-BP1 phosphorylation in non-neural cells, but this has not been comprehensively investigated in neurons. The effects of AA levels on mTOR signaling and S6 and 4E-BP1 phosphorylation were analyzed in Tsc2 and Depdc5 (a distinct mTOR regulatory gene associated with epilepsy) CRISPR-edited Neuro2a (N2a) ce

Combining Gene-Disease Associations with Single-Cell Gene Expression Data Provides Anatomy-Specific Subnetworks in Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of visual impairment in the developed world. Despite some treatment options for late AMD, there is no intervention that blocks early AMD proceeding to the late and blinding forms. This is partly due to the lack of precise drug targets, despite great advances in genetics, epidemiology, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks proposed to be driving the disease pathology. A systems approach to narrow down PPI networks to specific protein drug targets would provide new therapeutic options. Materials and Methods: In

Repeated finasteride administration induces depression-like behavior in adult male rats.

The enzyme 5α-Reductase (5α-R) catalyzes the formation of dihydrotestosterone, which is involved in male pattern hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Finasteride inhibits 5α-R and is used to treat both these conditions. Several clinical studies show that chronic finasteride treatment induces persistent depression, suicidal thoughts, and cognitive impairment. The neural mechanisms underlying these effects of finasteride are not known and it is imperative that an animal model that mimics the clinical neuropsychiatric effects of finasteride is developed. Accordingly, we evaluated the behav

The role of vitamin D replacement therapy in serum FGF23 concentration in children with myelomeningocele compared with healthy children - a preliminary study.

Background Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a recently discovered bone-derived regulator of vitamin D metabolism and phosphate homeostasis. It inhibits phosphate reabsorption and calcitriol production by the kidney. Myelomeningocele (MMC) remains the most severe form of neural tube defects involving serious locomotor disability, osteoporosis and pathologic fractures. We aimed to investigate the influence of vitamin D replacement therapy on serum FGF23 concentration in children with MMC and compare the results with healthy participants. Methods This prospective analysis was conducted on 1
