We report a 29-year-old white woman who presented with oral involvement and subsequently developed severe and extensive laryngeal involvement with mucous membrane pemphigoid. She could not tolerate systemic corticosteroids due to side-effects. Dapsone improved only the oral disease, but the laryngeal disease remained active and progressive. She refused immunosuppressive agents, because she wanted to conceive. The acute severe widespread laryngeal pemphigoid was accompanied by severe relentless coughing and dysphonia. PURPOSE: To compare vitamin A supplementation status of children age 6-60 months to the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency disease, malnutrition, diarrhea, and acute respiratory infection.

Health facility ledgers of 11 rural health facilities in western Kenya were reviewed to evaluate diagnostic and prescribing practices. Clinics lacked laboratory facilities. Of 14,267 sick child visits (SCVs), 76% were diagnosed with malaria and/or upper respiratory infections. Other diagnoses were recorded in less than 5% of SCVs. Transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae between children and their parents was evaluated in 29 pairs from 25 families. The serotypes of 35 pneumococcal isolates from 18 (62.1%) of 29 child-parent pairs were identical. Of the 35 isolates, 23 showed intermediate resistance and 10 were fully resistant to penicillin G. While prognostic information for Dandy-Walker syndrome and non-progressive cerebellar ataxia/cerebellar hypoplasia is available, surprisingly scant literature reports are found for space-occupying posterior fossa arachnoid cysts (PFAC). We examined the contribution of temperament, childhood neglect, and abuse to the development of personality dysfunction as postulated in three different but correlated models of personality: the psychobiological, Vaillant's psychoanalytic, and DSM psychopathology models. Character, defense style, and personality disorder symptomatology (the dependent variables), and temperament, childhood neglect, and abuse (the independent variables) were assessed in 168 depressed outpatients. High harm avoidance (temperament) tended to be the strongest and most consistent risk factor across the three models.

Post-traumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) is a medical complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). There have been numerous reports of functional gains after shunt placement for PTH in adults but only rare observations about children. Thirty cases of anterior encephalocele treated in our centre over an 18-year period (from 1973 to 1990) are presented. Fifty-eight children with neuromuscular handicap participating in a habilitation program at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia underwent an abbreviated vision examination evaluating their visual status. Between 1966 and 1990, 171 cases of Hirschsprung's disease, of which 21 were total colonic aganglionosis, were surgically treated at our centre. In the first period up to 1978, in which total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was not used, six of 11 patients died.
