BACKGROUND: The treatment of radial neck fractures in children varies according to the displacement, angulation, and skeletal maturity. There is a general agreement that displaced radial neck fractures with more than 30° angulations (Judet type III and IV fractures) should be surgically treated. There are several treatment possibilities for Judet type III and IV fractures including percutaneous pin reduction, elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN), and open reduction with or without internal fixation. In this retrospective study we compared the clinical and radiographical outcomes, and c

BACKGROUND: Fracture-dislocation is the extreme variant of injury to the proximal humerus that occurs more commonly in young adults as a result of high-velocity trauma. We evaluated the functional and radiologic outcome of fixation of proximal humeral fracture-dislocations with locked plates.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of 33 proximal humeral fracture-dislocations in 29 patients with a mean age of 35 years (range, 19-60 years) treated by open reduction and internal fixation with locked plates between January 2009 and December 2013. The fracture-dislocation in 85% was the result o

BACKGROUND: A jumped facet joint is defined by when the inferior articular process of the superior vertebra becomes locked anterior to the superior articular process of the inferior vertebra. These typically traumatic lesions are exceedingly rare in the thoracic spine. Here, we present a patient with a unilateral jumped facet joint in the upper thoracic spine treated with open reduction and an instrumented fusion.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 45-year-old male presented after a significant motor vehicle accident. In the emergency room, he had a Glasgow Coma Score of 13 without any neurologic deficit. T

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies of acetabular fractures (AFs) are scarce and, to our knowledge, the most recent one from France, by Letournel and Judet, dates back to 1993. Studies have suggested a decrease in high-energy AFs contrasting with an increase in low-energy AFs due to the longer life expectancy. However, a French case-series study failed to confirm these data. We therefore conducted a 10-year retrospective study in a level-1 trauma centre to: (1) characterise the epidemiological profile of AF; (2) and to describe the treatment strategy.
HYPOTHESIS: The epidemiological profile o

Scaphoid fractures are common injuries which traditionally have been treated with long periods of immobilization even after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). The purpose of this pilot investigation was two-fold: 1) describe a precise postoperative Early Active Motion (EAM) rehabilitation protocol following ORIF of scaphoid fractures and 2) record the outcomes of the EAM protocol. Eight consecutive patients having undergone ORIF of the scaphoid were enrolled in the EAM and followed for a minimum of 1 year. At 12 weeks, Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, Mayo Wris

There are various treatment options for frontal sinus fractures. They mainly depend on whether the anterior or posterior table and the frontal sinus outflow tract (FSOT) are affected. Our study retrospectively assessed the surgical management of 116 frontal sinus fractures in terms of the different surgical treatment options as well as the resulting complications. In our cohort, all cases of displaced anterior table fractures (n = 73) were treated by open reduction and fixation (ORIF). In cases of posterior table fractures (n = 43), cranialization, obliteration, sinus preserving measures, or n

Double plating (DP) is an established treatment modality in traumatology. For certain indications, such as open reduction and internal fixation of bicondylar tibial plateau fractures and distal humeral fractures, DP is standard of care in the clinical routine. However, the principles of DP can be transferred to other anatomic regions and indications. In the past years, DP has been brought more and more into focus. For revision cases, such as the treatment of fracture non-unions, DP seems generally useful. In anatomical locations with high torsional stress and bending forces, but also in region

Hamate fractures represent only 2% to 4% of all carpal bone fractures because they require a large degree of force to the hand or wrist. This is a case report of a patient with hamate and capitate fractures after a punch injury. It details the minute change seen in routine 3-view radiographic imagery and indications for computed tomography. A 29-year-old African American man with professional boxing training presented to the emergency department with pain and swelling in the hand and wrist after striking a refrigerator with his right hand. Enough force generated along the axial plane of the fo

PURPOSE: Limited data are currently available regarding the nature of craniomaxillofacial fractures in the geriatric population. This retrospective study reviews 109 hospital records dating from 1981 to mid-1993. The goal of this study was to provide details relevant to these types of injuries.
RESULTS: Most patients were injured in motor vehicle accidents (MVA) or fall-related episodes. Females sustained 43.9% of the fractures while males sustained 56.1%. In females, falls were the most common cause of fractures, while in males MVAs caused the majority of fractures (P < .01). Most fractures

Tibial periprosthetic fractures following total knee arthroplasty are relatively uncommon, but represent a complex and increasingly encountered complication given the growing volume of primary and revision arthroplasty procedures. These injuries present unique challenges due to compromised bone stock, implant-related constraints, and patient-specific factors such as advanced age and osteoporosis. The location of the fracture, implant stability, bone quality, and the functional needs of the patient all influence management tactics. While operative intervention is frequently necessary for displa

Geriatric pelvic and acetabular fractures pose significant challenges due to patient frailty, comorbidities, and the complexity of fracture patterns. This review examines current evidence and evolving strategies for managing these injuries. Treatment approaches range from nonoperative management to surgical interventions, including percutaneous fixation, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), and total hip arthroplasty, either as a standalone procedure or combined with ORIF. Decision making is guided by fracture morphology, patient functionality, and physiological reserve to optimize cli

INTRODUCTION: Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) is a common benign fibrogenic bone lesion commonly found in the metaphysis of long bones. While small NOFs are typically asymptomatic and left untreated, large NOFs are often associated with pathologic fractures that can be treated conservatively or operatively. To our knowledge, the NOF presented in this case report is one of the largest reported in the literature.

Ankle fractures have been well documented and are common, especially in the elderly, behind hip and distal radius fractures. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is the standard of treatment for displaced and unstable ankle fractures. Traditionally, ankle fractures in the elderly population have been treated with nonoperative methods; however, nonoperative methods have been associated with increased mortality. Thus, there has been a shift toward operative management for the elderly and less healthy patients. However, these patients often present with more comorbidities that make them no

A fracture of the acromion and coracoid processes of scapula is rarely seen in the outpatient clinic, due to the acromion's anatomical position and shape, as well as the strong ligaments and muscles that are attached to it. These fractures are caused by either direct or indirect high-energy trauma injuries to the shoulder joint, leading to severe pain and a grossly restricted range of motion. Several acromial classifications were reported, but this type of longitudinal plane fracture of the acromion process in our case is yet to be described in the current literature. We present a rare combina
