Most studies on the psychological impact of trauma exposure focus on the response to a single type of trauma, with little or no attention paid to the contribution of prior traumatic experiences. The goal of this study was to disentangle some of the confounding effects of multiple trauma exposures by exploring the unique contribution to mental health outcomes made by specific types and dimensions of trauma. This report compares the psychological outcomes of college women who experienced different types of trauma during adolescence, including traumatic bereavement, sexual assault, and physical a

This paper summarizes a program of research on the behavioral characteristics of children with learning disabilities (LD) compared to average achievers. Longitudinal studies over a 3-year period beginning in the first and second grades showed that children with LD, as a heterogeneous group, displayed a persistent pattern of maladaptive classroom behavior that distinguished them from average achieving peers and that was associated with continued underachievement over time. Subsequently, children with LD in the longitudinal sample were clustered into seven different subtypes that represented att

A retrospective study examined early neurodevelopmental behaviors of children with spastic diplegia, spastic hemiplegia, and quadriplegia (spastic, athetoid, or mixed) who had been followed up longitudinally in a high-risk infant follow-up clinic. Compared with peers with normal outcomes, children with all three types of cerebral palsy had significantly lower scores on the Bayley Mental Scale at 4 months of age; children with hemiplegia and quadriplegia also scored significantly lower on the Bayley Motor Scale. On the Movement Assessment of Infants at 4 months of age, the children with hemiple

Delayed sexual development is present when an adolescent girl fails to experience, at an age that is beyond the average for her peers, those pubertal events that are indexes of gonadal function. Adolescent girls whose sexual development is delayed can be divided into three groups: (1) those who have not menstruated but have well-developed secondary sexual characteristics, indicating that they have a functioning hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian mechanism, (2) those with poorly developed secondary sexual characteristics whose hypothalamus and pituitary are functional but who have ovarian failure,

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) stigma constitutes a major barrier to HIV prevention, testing, and treatment, and is associated with harmful consequences for people living with HIV such as discrimination, rejection from family and friends, and treatment nonadherence. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to understand the drivers, perpetuators, and outcomes of HIV-related stigma among young people living with HIV (YPLWH) in Lima, Peru. From November 2022 to June 2023, we conducted interviews and focus groups with a diverse group of 75 YPWLH, in addition to healthcare providers and HIV ad

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasingly conceptualized as a neurodevelopmental condition involving atypical organization of large-scale neural dynamics. While EEG studies have largely focused on spectral power and connectivity, how neural signal complexity is organized across development in ASD remains poorly understood.
METHODS: Resting-state EEG was recorded from 186 children aged 3-11 years, including children with ASD and typically developing (TD) peers. Participants were further categorized into preschool-aged and school-aged groups to examine developmental differences

OBJECTIVES: This study explored experiences of Relational Accommodation (RA) for caregivers and significant others living with an adult with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and how they respond to BDD symptoms. BDD is under-researched. In paediatric and/or obsessive-compulsive populations, RA has been found to negatively impact the lives of caregivers. To date, very little is understood about RA in caregivers for adults with BDD and how this impacts the phenomenology of BDD. Given the high suicidality rates in BDD populations, and somewhat conservative treatment outcomes, a greater understandin

CONTEXT: Anorexia nervosa (AN) in adolescents is a severe disorder with complex aetiology. The role of childhood maltreatment (CM) in the development and course of AN remains unclear. The study aimed to analyse the co-occurrence of CM with the severity of psychopathology in patients with AN and to assess their relationship with the dynamics of clinical improvement.
METHODS: The study included only girls under 18 years of age: 39 patients hospitalised for the first time with a diagnosis of AN and 43 healthy participants from the control group (CG). Questionnaires were used to assess trauma (CT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate serum selenium concentrations in children and adolescents with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) residing in an iodine-sufficient region and to investigate their associations with clinical, biochemical, and ultrasonographic parameters.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional case-control study, 50 patients younger than 18 years diagnosed with HT and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. HT was defined by elevated anti-thyroid peroxidase and/or anti-thyroglobulin antibodies and supported by ultrasonographic findings. Serum selenium concentrations

Two possible indicators of a deficient segregation of functional networks are within-underconnectivity and between-overconnectivity. Both these processes can be observed in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to be associated with different core and co-occurring atypicalties of behavior. We focused on within- and between-network connectivity of Frontoparietal and Sensorimotor networks in ASD compared to typically developed (TD) peers and its links to social difficulties and impairments of executive and motor functions. To our knowledge, this study for the first time described between-network connec

Social environmental factors frequently play an important role in early-life. It is reported that isolation increases vulnerability to develop alcohol use disorder. We investigated the effects of re-socialization on high alcohol preference and anxiety behaviors, induced by early-life social isolation (SI), and its possible underlying mechanism in male Wistar rats. On the 21st postnatal day, animals were either housed in groups of (CON) or isolated (SI-1) for the first stage (3 weeks). Afterwards, the SI-1 group were divided into two groups: re-socialization with socially housed rats (Re-SH) an

Low socioeconomic status (SES) has been associated with an increased risk of depression and psychiatric disorders in general. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we provide an estimate of the risk of clinical depression associated with low SES across cultures, age groups, and study designs. Finally, we tested whether associations between SES and depression differed by the income of the country in which the study was conducted. A literature search across 5 databases returned 7943 studies. Title, abstract, and full-text screening resulted in 162 included studies of which 122 were meta-a

Executive function (EF) in specific learning disorders (SLD) has been investigated using mainly cool EF tasks, whilst less is known about hot EF and theory of mind (ToM) in this population. The aim of this study was to examine group differences in hot and cool EF and ToM in school-aged children with SLD relative to typically developing peers. It also attempted to investigate whether EF measures are significant predictors of ToM in SLD and typical development. Cross-sectional data were collected from 135 school-aged children with and without SLD (8-10 years old), tested on measures of cool & ho

Replications are important for assessing the reliability of published findings. However, they are costly, and it is infeasible to replicate everything. Accurate, fast, lower-cost alternatives such as eliciting predictions could accelerate assessment for rapid policy implementation in a crisis and help guide a more efficient allocation of scarce replication resources. We elicited judgements from participants on 100 claims from preprints about an emerging area of research (COVID-19 pandemic) using an interactive structured elicitation protocol, and we conducted 29 new high-powered replications.

PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common medical complication of pregnancy, and the emerging evidence demonstrates how GDM online communities have a positive impact on promoting self-management and improving outcomes. Further analysis of such groups can increase understanding of how peer support in GDM online communities is enabled and enacted.
AIM: To examine women's experiences of GDM online communities on Facebook, their motivations for participation, and perceptions of dynamics within the community.
METHODS: Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted w

INTRODUCTION: Sexuality and relationship education is a learning area that historically has been overlooked, especially for autistic individuals. To inform future programming, we are in need of evidence-based reasoning to guide program design, such as what to cover and when. In particular, the social aspects of sexuality and relationship education, which are less commonly addressed, need further scrutiny.
OBJECTIVE: To identify sexuality and relationship education priorities and timelines based on feedback from autistic and non-autistic adults.
METHODS: An online anonymous survey of adults i

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a complex and multifactorial disease that has affected many adolescents in recent decades. Clinical practice guidelines recommend exercise as the key treatment option for adolescents with overweight and obesity. However, the effects of virtual reality (VR) exercise on the physical and brain health of adolescents with overweight and obese remain unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effects of physical and VR exercises on physical and brain outcomes and explore the differences in benefits between them. Moreover, we will apply a multiomics analysis to investigate the
