Contrasting the effects of natural selection, genetic drift and gene flow on urban evolution in white clover (Trifolium repens).

Urbanization is a global phenomenon with profound effects on the ecology and evolution of organisms. We examined the relative roles of natural selection, genetic drift and gene flow in influencing the evolution of white clover (Trifolium repens), which thrives in urban and rural areas. Trifolium repens exhibits a Mendelian polymorphism for the production of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a potent antiherbivore defence. We quantified the relative frequency of HCN in 490 populations sampled along urban-rural transects in 20 cities. We also characterized genetic variation within 120 populations in eight

The leucine-rich repeat domain can determine effective interaction between RPS2 and other host factors in arabidopsis RPS2-mediated disease resistance.

Like many other plant disease resistance genes, Arabidopsis thaliana RPS2 encodes a product with nucleotide-binding site (NBS) and leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domains. This study explored the hypothesized interaction of RPS2 with other host factors that may be required for perception of Pseudomonas syringae pathogens that express avrRpt2 and/or for the subsequent induction of plant defense responses. Crosses between Arabidopsis ecotypes Col-0 (resistant) and Po-1 (susceptible) revealed segregation of more than one gene that controls resistance to P. syringae that express avrRpt2. Many F(2) and F

Codeine toxicity via breast Milk: Can this occur and implications for opiate therapy in children.

Codeine is commonly used in combination analgesic products. The use of codeine during breastfeeding can rarely be associated with serious adverse effects related to genetic polymorphisms affecting codeine's metabolism and disposition. Clinicians treating infants of breastfeeding mothers should be aware of this rare but potentially serious complication.

Genetic variation in the long pentraxin PTX3 and Dectin-1 does not predispose to influenza- or COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis.

In this multicentric study, we found no association regarding incidence or outcome between common single nucleotide polymorphisms in PTX3 and CLEC7A and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in patients with severe viral pneumonia. The distinct pathophysiology of virus-associated pulmonary aspergillosis warrants exploration of genetic variation in novel candidates.

Relationship of four vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms with type 1 diabetes mellitus susceptibility in Kuwaiti children.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in Kuwait is amongst the highest in the world. Vitamin D is considered to be involved in immune modulation and its deficiency contribute to autoimmune destruction of insulin producing beta cells in T1DM patients. Vitamin D has been shown to exert its effects via a nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) and therefore, VDR gene may be considered a candidate for T1DM susceptibility. METHODS: The genotypes of four VDR gene polymorphisms were determined in 253 Kuwaiti Arab T1DM patients and 214 healthy controls by PCR-RFLP analysis. Serum conc

Meta-analysis of two ERCC2 (XPD) polymorphisms, Asp312Asn and Lys751Gln, in breast cancer.

The excision repair cross-complementing group 2 gene (ERCC2) plays a key role in DNA repair. Several polymorphisms in the ERCC2 gene have been described, including the commonly occurring Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn polymorphisms. Studies investigating the association of these polymorphisms with breast cancer risk produced controversial results. To evaluate these associations presented in diverse populations, we have conducted a meta-analysis based on 40 studies from 33 publications in PubMed which included analyses of Lys751Gln (14,545 cases, 15,352 controls) and Asp312Asn polymorphisms (16,254 ca

Role of interleukin 1β and interleukin 10 variants on ocular toxoplasmosis in Brazilian individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is an intraocular inflammation caused by Toxoplasma gondii infection that affects the retina and choroid, giving rise to posterior uveitis. Genetic polymorphisms in cytokine genes may exert influence in the expression of these molecules and play a significant role in inflammatory responses and susceptibility to OT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of polymorphisms rs16944 (-511 C > T) of the interleukin (IL) 1β gene and rs1800896 (-1082 G > A) of the IL10 gene on OT in Brazilian individuals with a serologic diagnosis of T. gondii and after

Genetic Admixture and Flavor Preferences: Androstenone Sensitivity in Malagasy Populations.

The genetic basis of androstenone anosmia has been well studied due to androstenone's putative role as a human sex pheromone and its presence in pork meat. Polymorphisms have been identified on the olfactory receptor gene OR7D4, which significantly affect perception of androstenone pleasantness and intensity in several Western populations. This study aims to investigate androstenone sensitivity and the influence of OR7D4 polymorphisms in non-Western populations. Androstenone perception was tested in 132 individuals from Madagascar using a double three-alternative choice test with two concentra

Role of familiarity versus interleukin-1 genes cluster polymorphisms in chronic periodontitis.

Periodontitis (PO) is a multifactorial disease affecting about 10% to 20% of the general population. Several studies have suggested that part of the clinical variability in PO might be explained by genetic factors. Among the candidate genes for PO, IL1 gene polymorphisms have been broadly investigated, with variable results, for their relationship with the disease. We studied three IL1 polymorphisms, IL1A C[-889]T (rs1800587), IL1B C[3953/4]T (rs1143634), and IL1RN VNTR [+2018] (rs419598) in relation to different life styles and familiarities. We did not find correlation between these IL1 poly

IL4 gene polymorphisms and their relation to periodontal disease in a Macedonian population.

Genetic polymorphisms in the interleukin-4 (IL4) gene have been reported to influence the host response to microbial challenge by altering levels of cytokine expression. We analyzed nucleotide polymorphisms in the promoter region of the IL4 gene and its relation with periodontal disease in a Macedonian population. The study population consisted of 92 unrelated subjects with chronic periodontitis and 286 healthy controls. DNA was isolated and IL4 genotyping performed by polymerase chain reaction-single-strand polymorphism (Heidelberg kit) for the alleles and genotypes of IL4 -1098, IL4 -590, an

KLOTHO gene polymorphism of G395A is associated with kidney stones.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: KLOTHO, a type-1 transmembrane protein with glucurodinase activity, is expressed in tissues responsible for calcium homeostasis such as the kidney, parathyroid gland and the epithelium of the choroid plexus in the brain. Given the emerging evidence indicating a novel regulatory function for KLOTHO protein in renal calcium and phosphate homeostasis, the present study aims to investigate the association between KLOTHO genetic polymorphisms and kidney stone (KS). METHODS: KLOTHO gene polymorphisms G395A in the promoter region, F252V in exon 2, and C1818T in exon 4 were investiga

Serotonin-transporter-linked promoter region polymorphism and serotonin transporter binding in drug-naïve patients with major depression.

AIMS: Both the serotonin transporter and its genetic regulation by the serotonin-transporter-linked polymorphic region have a role in the pathophysiology of depression. Most of the previous studies have found no influence of serotonin-transporter-linked polymorphic region allelic variation on serotonin transporter binding in healthy controls or patients with major depression. Due to the inconsistency of the previous findings, we compared single photon emission computed tomography imaging with the serotonin-transporter-linked polymorphic region genotype in patients with major depressive disorde

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis and gene polymorphisms for the inflammatory markers TNF-alpha, TNF-beta and the vitamin D receptor: no association detected.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possibility that minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis (MiRAS) is associated with the inheritance of specific gene polymorphisms for markers associated with macrophage driven inflammation, i.e. tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), TNF-beta or the vitamin D receptor (VDR). SETTING: MiRAS is a common, painful, ulcerative condition of the mouth. Its etiology is unknown although mononuclear inflammatory cells are thought to play an important role. There is no clear genetic mode of inheritance, however, many patients report a positive family history and disease conc

Molecular analysis, mutation screening, and association study of adenylate cyclase type 9 gene (ADCY9) in mood disorders.

Chromosome 16p13 has been shown to display modest linkage signals for mood disorders in a number of studies. An interesting candidate gene in this region is the adenylate cyclase (AC) type 9 gene (ADCY9). ACs are critical in neuronal signaling, and perturbation of brain AC activity has been reported in mood disorder postmortem brains. ACs may also act as targets of antidepressants. Two distinct length transcripts for the ADCY9 gene have been reported, but molecular mechanisms are unknown. To investigate the potential role of ADCY9 in mood disorders, we clarified alternative poly(A) sites for t
