We conducted an on-site examination in selected middle and junior high schools in Utah to determine the incidence of selected musculoskeletal deviations. During a regular school year, we screened 4,670 children. The students we examined represented a random sample of students in the sixth through the ninth grades from a population of 81,047 students. Among the 2,192 boys and 2,478 girls examined, we noted a total of 10,551 postural deviations. Eighteen categories of deviations of the musculoskeletal system were examined visually. The authors observed two cases (males aged 21 and 23) of long-term body hyperthermia in the orthostatic posture. Clinical examination detected left-sided stage III-IV varicocele. Elevation of body temperature was stopped by ligation of the testicular veins. A long-term follow-up showed a good response.

Postural changes of body equilibrium on a moving force plate were examined for sinusoidal movements, saccades and frequency whilst different stimuli were applied under various visual conditions. If a dynamic stimulus was used, the stabilization of vision shows a distinct visual-vestibular conflict which provokes postural disequilibrium. This is the cause of motion sickness during car driving. This disequilibrium is also the cause of the motor insecurity experienced during walking and reading at the same time.

While postural hypotension was present in almost 20% of ambulatory patients of this long-term institution, associated symptoms were infrequent. A comparison of the groups with and without a history of falls in the prior year revealed no relationship to the presence of postural hypotension and no relationship to a number of medications which have been reported to be associated with orthostatic hypotension. Blood pressure readings should be obtained at 1,3 and 5 min after assuming the erect position as significant falls in blood pressure were found at each interval.

We investigated the effect of arotinolol, a new peripherally acting beta-adrenergic blocker, in 15 patients with essential tremor. The patients received 30 mg per day of arotinolol for 8 weeks. Accelerometer readings showed a significant reduction in amplitude of postural tremor after treatment. Action tremor also improved to essentially the same degree as postural tremor. The present findings support the view that the therapeutic effect of beta-blockers in essential tremor is mediated by peripheral beta-adrenergic receptors.

The authors report a case of grave orthostatic hypotension (Shy-Drager's syndrome) with major postural disturbances. The biological test confirmed a catecholaminergic deficiency. After several drugs were tried unsucessfully, an association of L-Dopa and fractionated doses of mono-amine-oxydase inhibitor was proposed. The increase blood pressure was sufficient to block the diturbances of postural adaptation, without inducing hypertensive jerks. The functionnal result have been stable for three years, while the parkinsonian syndrome have shown little progression.

Humans often vocalize while concurrently gesturing with their hands. Fluctuations in the intensity and tone of the voice have been shown to synchronize with gestural upper limb movement. This research provides direct evidence that (postural) muscle activity associated with arm movements predict these voicing fluctuations. We show that specific muscles (e.g. pectoralis major, erector spinae), associated with upper limb movement and their postural anticipations, are especially likely to interact with the voice.
