We investigated the effect of doxazosin on cholinergic and adrenergic agonists responses in detrusor smooth muscle preparations from sham-operated and 2-week partially obstructed rat bladders. AIMS: Recent advances in genetic manipulation have allowed for over expression or deletion of selective genes in mice. This offers urologic investigators new means of understanding bladder function in the context of normal development or the response to outlet obstruction. It is important to correlate any genetic manipulations in mice with specific phenotypic properties such as voiding patterns, or muscle strip physiology. The basolateral Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) cotransporter (NKCC1) functions in the maintenance of cellular electrolyte and volume homeostasis. NKCC1-deficient (Nkcc1(-/-)) mice were used to examine its role in cardiac function and in the maintenance of blood pressure and vascular tone. Rat pinealocytes accumulate glutamate in microvesicles and secrete it through exocytosis so as to transmit signals intercellularly. The pharmacology of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels involved in the release of endogenous neurotransmitter amino acids was measured from small tissue slices of rat hippocampal CA1 region. Two alpha-glucosidases from human heart, liver, muscle, kidney and urine have been separated by means of Sephadex G-100 gel filtration. The first peak (Peak I) was neutral alpha-glucosidase and the second peak (Peak II) was lysosomal acid alpha-glucosidase. Peak II was absent in a patient with the adult form of Pompe's disease. Calcium chloride (7 mg/kg) was administered intravenously to six healthy volunteers anesthetized with halothane. Cardiovascular changes were measured during constant ventilation and anesthetic depth under three conditions: 1) respiratory alkalosis, 2) normocarbia, and 3) respiratory acidosis.
