Cervical pedicle screw guiding jig, an innovative solution.

Pedicle screws are one the commonest used modality in spinal instrumentation. However, the method of pedicle screw fixation in cervical spine as compared to thoracic and lumbar spine is still technically demanding because it carries the risk of catastrophic damage to the surrounding neurovascular structures We have utilized virtual planning and 3D (3-dimension) printing to develop a patient specific jig to guide the accurate placement of pedicle screws. A patient with bifacetal dislocation C7 over D1 classified as flexion-distraction injury type 3 who was planned for decompression and fusion b…

An Implanted Tooth That Can Feel.

Diverse material species, ranging from gold to ceramic, have been selected to construct dental implants in the past decades. However, existing implants are primarily designed to restore masticatory function yet fail to completely recover the sensory feedback of natural teeth. Deprivation of sensory inputs impairs the perception of food texture and hinders the regulation of chewing force. This defect could result in unnecessary overload, leading to technical complications and biological failures, such as bone loss and temporomandibular joint damage, which remarkably limit their clinical outcome

Multifunctional Biocomposite Materials from Chlorella vulgaris Microalgae.

Extrusion 3D-printing of biopolymers and natural fiber-based biocomposites enables the fabrication of complex structures, ranging from implants' scaffolds to eco-friendly structural materials. However, conventional polymer extrusion requires high energy consumption to reduce viscosity, and natural fiber reinforcement often requires harsh chemical treatments to improve adhesion. We address these challenges by introducing a sustainable framework to fabricate natural biocomposites using Chlorella vulgaris microalgae as the matrix. Through bioink optimization and process refinement, we produced li…

An open-source handheld spectrometer for colorimetric and fluorescence analyses.

Spectrometers are essential analytical devices for analyzing fluid samples in biological, environmental, and disease diagnostic applications. However, the relatively high cost, the lack of portability, and the requirement for a constant power supply of bulky laboratory instruments limit their on-site applications. Herein, a wireless, cost-effective, open-source, and handheld spectrometer was designed and fabricated to realize the colorimetric and fluorescence analyses. It was built from off-the-shelf electronics utilizing 3D printing technology. The assembled device costs as little as $50. It …

Bioinks and Bioprinting Strategies for Skeletal Muscle Tissue Engineering.

Skeletal muscles play important roles in critical body functions and their injury or disease can lead to limitation of mobility and loss of independence. Current treatments result in variable functional recovery, while reconstructive surgery, as the gold-standard approach, is limited due to donor shortage, donor-site morbidity, and limited functional recovery. Skeletal muscle tissue engineering (SMTE) has generated enthusiasm as an alternative solution for treatment of injured tissue and serves as a functional disease model. Recently, bioprinting has emerged as a promising tool for recapitulat…

Integrating melt electrowriting and inkjet bioprinting for engineering structurally organized articular cartilage.

Successful cartilage engineering requires the generation of biological grafts mimicking the structure, composition and mechanical behaviour of the native tissue. Here melt electrowriting (MEW) was used to produce arrays of polymeric structures whose function was to orient the growth of cellular aggregates spontaneously generated within these structures, and to provide tensile reinforcement to the resulting tissues. Inkjet printing was used to deposit defined numbers of cells into MEW structures, which self-assembled into an organized array of spheroids within hours, ultimately generating a hyb…

[Potential of three-dimensional bioprinting in oral soft tissue engineering applications].

Oral soft tissue engineering involves the reconstruction or restoration of oral and maxillofacial functions and esthetics. As an emerging technology from the early 21st century, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting promises great application potentials in the preparation of scaffolds and engineered tissues/organs. Although oral soft tissues include dental pulp, periodontal ligament, gum, oral mucosa, and salivary glands as well as related maxillofacial skin, vascular, muscular, and neuronal tissues, the current application of 3D bioprinting in oral soft tissue-restoration is mainly limited to de…

The accuracy of three-dimensional rapid prototyped surgical template guided anterior segmental osteotomy.

OBJECTIVES: Many patients with autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants due to breast implants (ASIA-BII) complain of dry eyes, which may be due to impaired tear production or increased tear evaporation. The clinical differences between ASIA-BII patients with dry eyes, compared to other rheumatic diseases (e.g. Sjögren's Disease (SjD)) are largely unknown. We aimed to better classify dry eye disease (DED) by determining if their symptoms stemmed from impaired tear production. We also explored whether common biomarkers present in SjD patients were detected in DED patients with ASIA

Green volumetric bioprinting: building photosynthetically active structures with light-scattering microalgae.

Microalgae are robust microorganisms with versatile metabolic functions, including oxygen generation, making them crucial components in wastewater treatment plants, food production, or extraterrestrial life-support systems. Immobilizing microalgae in hydrogels could eliminate costly separation steps required in free-floating cultivation. Volumetric bioprinting (VBP), enabling rapid fabrication of large, complex constructs from cell-laden hydrogels, presents a promising solution. This study investigates the possibilities and limitations of VBP with microalgae in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate…

The global increase in the use of dental implants also increases treatment-related complications. Peri-implantitis is a matter of concern at this stage. This study aimed to compare the behavior of an additive manufacturing implant with commercially available implants with different surface treatments, exposed or not to a peri-implantitis challenge. Eighty implants with three different surfaces (Straumann BLT [A], Noble Biocare Active [B], Plenum 3D printed titanium implants test [C], and Plenum 3D printed titanium implants served as a negative control [D]) were placed into male minipigs (Minip

Real-time, noise and drift resilient formaldehyde sensing at room temperature with aerogel filaments.

Formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen, is a common indoor air pollutant. However, its real-time and selective recognition from interfering gases remains challenging, especially for low-power sensors suffering from noise and baseline drift. We report a fully 3D-printed quantum dot/graphene-based aerogel sensor for highly sensitive and real-time recognition of formaldehyde at room temperature. By optimizing the morphology and doping of printed structures, we achieve a record-high and stable response of 15.23% for 1 part per million formaldehyde and an ultralow detection limit of 8.02 parts per

Mixed Reality in the Operating Room: An Initial Use in Frontal Sinus Setback in Gender-affirming Facial Surgery.

Demand for gender-affirming facial surgery is growing rapidly. Frontal sinus setback, one of the key procedures used in gender-affirming facial surgery, has a particularly high impact on gender perception. Mixed reality (MR) allows a user to view and virtually overlay three-dimensional imaging on the patient and interact with it in real time. We used the Medivis's SurgicalAR system in conjunction with the Microsoft HoloLens Lucille2 (Microsoft). Computed tomography imaging was uploaded to SurgicalAR, and a three-dimensional (3D) hologram was projected onto the display of the HoloLens. The holo
