Incarceration and Quality of Cancer Care.

IMPORTANCE: Although incarceration is associated with worse cancer outcomes, little is known about quality of cancer care among people with a history of incarceration. OBJECTIVE: To describe quality of cancer care among those diagnosed with cancer during or immediately after incarceration. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This longitudinal cohort study used Connecticut Tumor Registry data linked to Department of Correction rosters from 2005 through 2016. Patients diagnosed with cancer while incarcerated were matched to those diagnosed within 12 months after incarceration and to those with

Special Considerations Related to Race, Sex, Gender, and Socioeconomic Status in the Preoperative Evaluation: Part 1: Race, History of Incarceration, and Health Literacy.

Patients anticipating surgery and anesthesia benefit from preoperative care to lower risks and facilitate services on the day of surgery. Preparing patients often requires extensive evaluation and coordination of care. Vulnerable, marginalized, and disenfranchised populations have special concerns, limitations, and needs. These patients may have unidentified or poorly managed comorbidities. Underrepresented minorities and transgender patients may either avoid or have limited access to health care. Homelessness, limited health literacy, and incarceration hinder perioperative optimization initia

Public Perception of Recidivism Risk among Released Correctional Inmates in Japan.

This study examines the disparity between public perception and official statistics on recidivism rates in Japan and investigates the impacts of gender and age on these estimates. A web-based survey with 381 participants was conducted. Participants estimated five-year reimprisonment rates for seven offense categories and the overall average. Results showed that participants overestimated recidivism rates for all offenses, with significant overestimation for sex offenses, robbery, and drug offenses by 27.35, 23.11, and 18.54 percentage points, respectively. A two-factor analysis of variance rev

Canadian Youth Correctional Officers' Views on Their Work and Relationships With Youth in Their Care.

This study explored the personal perspectives of youth correctional officers within secure and open custody facilities in Ontario. A multi-methods design allowed for quantitative data collection to assess demographics and scores on a relationship scale and qualitative open-ended survey responses to explore areas of interest regarding officer work. Despite a small sample size (N = 26), results indicated trends in officers' views of their work and relationships with youth. Youth officers report various job duties ranging from supervision/security to cleaning and preparing meals. Results indicate

Incarceration Exposure, Biological Aging, and Depression Symptoms in an African American Sample of Older Adults.

Objectives: The study draws upon perspectives on life-course stressors and health to assess whether lifetime incarceration exposure is a determinant of biological aging and self-reported depression. Methods: Using data from a sample of 460 African American participants (average age= 57) in the Family and Community Health Study, the study examined two epigenetic indices of biological aging, DunedinPoAm and GrimAge, as well as a self-reported measure of depression symptoms. Estimates were derived from multivariate regression models with adjustments for selection on observables and confounding fa

Overdose Experiences Among a Sample of Women in Jail with Opioid Use Disorder.

Background:  Previous non-fatal overdose may increase risk of overdose fatality for women reentering the community following incarceration, but pre-incarceration overdose experiences are understudied. This study describes the prevalence and correlates of non-fatal overdose prior to jail among women with opioid use disorder (OUD). Methods: Women (N = 700) were randomly selected from eight Kentucky jails, screened for OUD, and interviewed as part of the NIDA-funded Kentucky Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN) trial. Descriptive statistics were used to examine women's prior overdo

Share of Adult Suicides After Recent Jail Release.

IMPORTANCE: Although people released from jail have an elevated suicide risk, the potentially large proportion of this population in all adult suicides is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To estimate what percentage of adults who died by suicide within 1 year or 2 years after jail release could be reached if the jail release triggered community suicide risk screening and prevention efforts. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort modeling study used estimates from meta-analyses and jail census counts instead of unit record data. The cohort included all adults who were released from US jails in 201

Risk factors for alcohol withdrawal-related hospital transfer in a correctional setting.

INTRODUCTION: A major health concern among individuals with alcohol use disorder is alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), where individuals with physical dependence on alcohol may experience withdrawal signs and symptoms upon stopping or reducing alcohol use. AWS has a range of severity, with the most severe cases referred to as complicated AWS, presenting as seizure or signs and symptoms indicative of delirium or new onset of hallucinations. In the general community, risk factors or predictors of complicated AWS among hospitalized patients have been described, but there is no literature that exa

Childhood Trauma Predicts Sadistic Traits and Violent Behavior in Incarcerated Youth.

Childhood trauma exposure is prevalent among incarcerated youth and associated with antisocial traits and behavior. It has been proposed as a risk factor for the development of sadistic traits, which has been shown to predict future violence in youth. Using regression analyses, we examined the association between self-report and expert-rated measures of childhood trauma, sadistic traits (i.e., verbal, physical, vicarious sadism), and violence (i.e., homicide and non-homicide violent acts) in 54 incarcerated juveniles. Expert-rated (but not self-report) severity of physical abuse was associated

Self-harm and suicide attempts among incarcerated lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Guided by minority stress theory, we explored the association between sexual identity, justice system involvement, self-harm and suicide attempts, among a cohort of incarcerated adults in Australia. METHODS: A sample of 2698 adults incarcerated in Queensland and Western Australia were surveyed between 1 August 2008 and 12 August 2016 about their current psychological distress, mental health diagnoses, contact with mental health services, and lifetime and recent self-harm and suicide attempts. We used multivariable logistic regression to explore the relationship between sexual orie

Experiences of Loneliness: COVID-19 Versus Incarceration.

As the world comes to terms with the realities surrounding COVID-19, media sources have likened quarantine experiences to that of incarceration. Individuals who have experienced incarceration and individuals who have experienced the incarceration of loved ones (LO), have already experienced periods of time apart. We are exploring the experiences of individuals who have some experience with incarceration; whether they were personally incarcerated, or they experienced the incarceration of a LO. Utilizing snowball sampling, a mixed methods survey was circulated on social media. Survey items inclu

Hepatitis C Virus Transmission Clusters in Public Health and Correctional Settings, Wisconsin, USA, 2016-20171.

Ending the hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemic requires stopping transmission among networks of persons who inject drugs. Identifying transmission networks by using genomic epidemiology may inform community responses that can quickly interrupt transmission. We retrospectively identified HCV RNA-positive specimens corresponding to 459 persons in settings that use the state laboratory, including correctional facilities and syringe services programs, in Wisconsin, USA, during 2016-2017. We conducted next-generation sequencing of HCV and analyzed it for phylogenetic linkage by using the Centers for D

Stability studies in biological fluids during post-analysis custody. Opiate compounds derived from heroin consumption.

In Forensic Toxicology, the evidences have to be maintained under custody for, at least, one year. Depending on the conditions and duration of storage, drug concentrations might have changed considerably since the first analysis. The aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro stability of opiate compounds, derived from heroin consumption, 6-acetylmorphine (6-MAM), morphine (MOR) and codeine (COD), in blood and urine, during post-analysis custody. Parameters evaluated were: time of custody, temperature, addition of preservative (blood) and pH (urine). Blood and urine samples were spiked with the

Qualitative Research in Correctional Settings: Researcher Bias, Western Ideological Influences, and Social Justice.

Within correctional settings, justice, health, and academic systems overlap for forensic nurse researchers. Within an environment that stresses social control, a researcher's implicit views, perspectives, and biases can lead to altering the authentic (re)presentation of a participant's experience. Researcher bias may be influenced by predominately western ideologies and societal discourses. Qualitative methods to mitigate and raise awareness around researcher biases include bracketing, unstructured interviews, diverse peer review, thinking inductively, investigator responsiveness, and critical

Making the case for innovative reentry employment programs: previously incarcerated women as birth doulas - a case study.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to make a case for novel and innovative reentry programs focused on women of color and to describe policy recommendations that are necessary to support the sustainability of these programs and in turn the success of the women who participate in them. Design/methodology/approach A review and analysis of the literature that described job-training opportunities specifically targeted to women exiting jail and the impact on recidivism provided limited information. The authors developed, implemented, and evaluated doula training program for low-income and women o

Jail Diversion for Persons with Serious Mental Illness Coordinated by a Prosecutor's Office.

Persons with serious mental illnesses (SMI) are involved in the criminal justice system at a disproportionately higher rate than the general population. While the exact causes remain unclear, it is accepted that a comprehensive strategy including mental health treatment is needed to reduce recidivism. This paper describes a unique jail diversion program coordinated by a county prosecutor's office in which individuals were diverted towards mental health services including case management, community-based services, and housing supports. Outcomes were studied over a five-year period, beyond the t

The Pursuit of Primary Human Goods in Men Desisting From Sexual Offending.

The good lives model proposes at least 10 primary human goods that are thought to be common to all individuals which, when secured, contribute to enhanced well-being and life satisfaction. Prosocial attainment of primary human goods is thought to promote desistance from crime. However, individuals convicted of sexual offenses face significant obstacles upon their reentry into the community that likely undermine their ability to obtain such goods. The current study explored the pursuit and attainment of primary human goods in a U.S. sample of men convicted of sexual offenses. We interviewed 42

Witnessing domestic violence during childhood is associated with psychopathic traits in adult male criminal offenders.

While there is growing evidence that suffering physical abuse during childhood is subsequently associated with psychopathic traits in both juvenile and adult offenders, there is considerably less research on whether exposure to domestic violence as a witness, rather than as a direct victim, influences the subsequent presentation of psychopathic traits in adulthood. Accordingly, the current study examined the relationship between witnessing domestic violence during childhood (i.e., witnessing, hearing, or intervening in abuse against a parent/sibling) and psychopathic traits in adulthood in a s
