OBJECTIVES: In this study, we assessed the difference in anatomical outcomes using the barbed, self-anchoring, delayed absorbable suture when compared with the traditional knot-tying interrupted suture technique during vaginal mesh attachment in robotic sacrocolpopexy. In addition, we compared the rates of mesh erosion with the 2 techniques.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 131 women who underwent minimally invasive robotic sacrocolpopexy at 2 sites. There were 65 subjects at site 1 (barbed, self-anchoring, delayed absorbable suture) and 66 from site 2 (traditional knot-tying

Prophylactic arterial ligation has been proposed to reduce the severity of postoperative hemorrhage following transoral robotic surgery (TORS). Previous studies have shown a trend toward a reduction in major and severe bleeding. Search strategies were implemented in multiple databases and completed in August 2018. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were designed to capture studies examining adults undergoing TORS for oropharyngeal cancer. Four retrospective studies were selected appropriate for analysis by two reviewers who independently extracted data. PRISMA guidelines were followed. A random-

Assistive robotic manipulators have the potential to support the lives of people suffering from severe motor impairments. They can support individuals with disabilities to independently perform daily living activities, such as drinking, eating, manipulation tasks, and opening doors. An attractive solution is to enable motor impaired users to teach a robot by providing demonstrations of daily living tasks. The user controls the robot 'manually' with an intuitive human-robot interface to provide demonstration, which is followed by the robot learning of the performed task. However, the control of

Development of gastrojejunal stricture following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) leads to an increase in morbidity and adverse effects, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, aspiration pneumonia, and malnutrition. Up to 38.5% of patients will require revisional surgery for late anastomotic strictures despite conservative treatment. However, no previous studies focused on revisional robotic bariatric surgery due to strictures after RYGB have been reported. To evaluate our outcomes and assess the advantages of the robotic platform with regard to laparoscopic and open revisional procedures. Universit

Hemiplegics have difficulty conducting various daily tasks because they must perform such tasks using only their unaffected arm. If a robot arm that can replace their missing upper-limb function is made available, it will greatly contribute to an improvement in their lives. To realize such a robot arm, cooperative actions of the robot arm and the unaffected arm are important. The purpose of this research is to develop a "cybernic robot arm" that can provide work support through cooperation with the unaffected arm for realization of upper-limb tasks in the daily life of hemiplegics. The develop

To describe a technical modifi cation for robotic-assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP) using three-steps reconstructive technique to achieve a 360 trigonization of the bladder mucosa. Through fi ve-trocars transperitoneal access, we perform a longitudinal incision of the bladder wall and prostate capsule. Our technique of RASP is very similar to the standard operative technique described during laparoscopic and robotic removal of adenoma, however, for reconstruction, we propose the Tunnel-Shaped Trigonization (TST). The fi rst step is the advancement of a bladder mucosa fl ap until the posteri

Shoulder arthrography is a diagnostic procedure which involves injecting a contrast agent into the joint space for enhanced visualization of anatomical structures. Typically, a contrast agent is injected under fluoroscopy or computed tomography (CT) guidance, resulting in exposure to ionizing radiation, which should be avoided especially in pediatric patients. The patient then waits for the next available magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) slot for obtaining high-resolution anatomical images for diagnosis, which can result in long procedure times. Performing the contrast agent injection under MR

Development of noninvasive brain-machine interface (BMI) systems based on electroencephalography (EEG), driven by spontaneous movement intentions, is a useful tool for controlling external devices or supporting a neuro- rehabilitation. In this study, we present the possibility of brain-controlled robot arm system using arm trajectory decoding. To do that, we first constructed the experimental system that can acquire the EEG data for not only movement execution (ME) task but also movement imagery (MI) tasks. Five subjects participated in our experiments and performed four directional reaching t

Body-machine interfaces, i.e. interfaces that rely on body movements to control external assistive devices, have been proposed as a safe and robust means of achieving movement and mobility; however, how children learn these novel interfaces is poorly understood. Here we characterized the learning of a body-machine interface in young unimpaired adults, two groups of typically developing children (9-year and 12-year olds), and one child with congenital limb deficiency. Participants had to control the end-effector of a robot arm in 2D using movements of the shoulder and torso. Results showed a st

This study reports our initial experience with robotic-assisted partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) repair. From May 2013 through September 2018, 20 patients (12 male and 8 female) underwent robotic-assisted repair of a right-sided (n = 19) or a left-sided (n = 1) PAPVC. The mean age was 24.6 ± 9.4 years (range 14-44) and the mean body mass index was 22.3 ± 4.6. Seventeen patients had a right-sided supra-cardiac PAPVC with sinus venosus atrial septal defect, two had a right-sided cardiac PAPVC to the right atrium and one had a left-sided cardiac PAPVC to the coronary sinus. INTRODUCTION: A urogenital sinus (US) and an anorectal malformation (ARM) are a rare constellation of anomalies, and the optimal surgical approach is unclear. Open and laparoscopic approaches have been described for US and ARM, but no data exist to support robotic assistance in children.
CASE: A 20-month-old Amish female presented to the study center with fever and abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasound showed a large fluid-filled vagina, urinalysis was positive, and she was admitted for antibiotic therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed hydrocolpos. An examination under anesthesia

Rectal prolapse (RP) is often seen in patients over the age of fifty, particularly women. These patients frequently suffer from other concomitant pathologies like rectocele, sigmoidocele, cystocele, or even enterocele. Rectopexy with a mesh has been an established treatment for rectal prolapse. The utilization of the robotic system allows for a successful repair within a confined pelvic space, especially for precise suture placement when working with the mesh. A 77-year-old female presented with obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) symptoms found to be caused by a progressive rectal prolapse.
