Dispositional mindfulness and semantic integration of emotional words: Evidence from event-related brain potentials.

Initial research shows that mindfulness training can enhance attention and modulate the affective response. However, links between mindfulness and language processing remain virtually unexplored despite the prominent role of overt and silent negative ruminative speech in depressive and anxiety-related symptomatology. Here, we measured dispositional mindfulness and recorded participants' event-related brain potential responses to positive and negative target words preceded by words congruent or incongruent with the targets in terms of semantic relatedness and emotional valence. While the low mi

The pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of excessive belching symptoms.

Excessive belching is a commonly observed complaint in clinical practice that can occur not only as an isolated symptom but also as a concomitant symptom in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or functional dyspepsia. Impedance monitoring has revealed that there are two mechanisms through which belching can occur: the gastric belch and the supragastric belch. The gastric belch is the result of a vagally mediated reflex leading to relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and venting of gastric air. The supragastric belch is a behavioral peculiarity. During this type of belc

Repertoires of emotion regulation: A person-centered approach to assessing emotion regulation strategies and links to psychopathology.

Despite growing research on emotion regulation (ER) strategies and psychopathology, research has primarily focused on identifying one-to-one associations between ER strategies and symptoms. Thus, little is known about how patterns in the repertoires of ER strategies are associated with different mental disorders. We utilised latent class analysis to identify distinct repertoires of ER strategies, and their links with various psychopathology domains (i.e., anxiety, depression, disordered eating, borderline personality). Participants (N = 531) reported on their use of seven ER strategies in six

Construct development: The Suicide Trigger Scale (STS-2), a measure of a hypothesized suicide trigger state.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to develop the construct of a 'suicide trigger state' by exploring data gathered with a novel psychometric self-report instrument, the STS-2. METHODS: The STS-2, was administered to 141 adult psychiatric patients with suicidal ideation. Multiple statistical methods were used to explore construct validity and structure. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha (0.949) demonstrated excellent internal consistency. Factor analyses yielded two-component solutions with good agreement. The first component described near-psychotic somatization and ruminative flooding, while the second d

A prospective study of cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms in patients with essential hypertension.

The objective of the current study was to examine the relationships between cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms in essential hypertension patients. Both cross-sectional and prospective relationships were studied in a sample of 650 essential hypertension patients. The cognitive emotion regulation strategies accounted for considerable amounts of variance in depressive symptoms. The following subscales were significantly positively correlated with first-time measurement and follow-up measurement of depressive symptoms: self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing, and blami

The bright side of being blue: depression as an adaptation for analyzing complex problems.

Depression is the primary emotional condition for which help is sought. Depressed people often report persistent rumination, which involves analysis, and complex social problems in their lives. Analysis is often a useful approach for solving complex problems, but it requires slow, sustained processing, so disruption would interfere with problem solving. The analytical rumination hypothesis proposes that depression is an evolved response to complex problems, whose function is to minimize disruption and sustain analysis of those problems by (a) giving the triggering problem prioritized access to

The pattern and manipulation of ovarian follicular growth in goats.

The understanding of the dynamics and regulation of follicle development in the goat has increased in recent years due to the use of ultrasonography. Previous findings observed in other ruminants extend to this species such as: the wavelike pattern of follicular growth with waves emerging every 5-7 days; the presence of follicular dominance, particularly during wave 1 and the ovulatory wave; and the role of progesterone concentrations on follicular wave turnover. However, traditional hormone treatments for oestrus synchronisation and superovulatory programs remain essentially unmodified and wi…

[The evaluation of perceived responsibility among obsessive-compulsive patients].

Although many authors agree that excessive responsibility is associated with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), some believe that the manifestations of responsibility are more easily observed among patients suffering from checking compulsions (36, 42). This study compares a group of obsessive-compulsive patients that have been sub-divided into three groups (washers, checkers, ruminators) with a group of normal volunteers that are healthy with regards to responsibility. The sample consisted of 58 adults who meet diagnostic criteria for OCD and 20 normal individuals. During an individual inter

Exploring How Soccer Players With Perfectionism Navigate Challenges in Talent Pathways.

The study provides a qualitative exploration of how soccer players reporting perfectionism navigate challenges in talent pathways. Eighteen players (10 females, eight males, Mage = 16.17 years, SD = 3.47) from talent pathways with higher levels of perfectionism and perfectionistic cognitions (1SD above the mean of samples from previous studies) participated in semistructured one-to-one interviews. Using semantic thematic analysis, seven themes were identified: cycles of anxiety, sadness at being a substitute, self-criticism and hopelessness during slumps, ruminating on mistakes, worthless when

Longitudinal associations between personal identity and parenthood among finnish young adults.

Fertility is declining rapidly across Western countries, and conventional factors (i.e., economic, cultural) seem insufficient in explaining the trend. The role of psychosocial factors, such as subjective perceptions of uncertainty, has gained importance in research. In this explorative study, we analysed for the first time the role of three personal identity processes from the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS): commitment making, identification with commitment, and ruminative exploration, in becoming a parent in young adults. Using longitudinal survey data of Finnish young adult

Algorithmic platform management and risk-taking behavior among Chinese food delivery riders.

Food delivery riders in China face widespread risk-taking behavior. This behavior is tied to algorithmic platform management. It is become more pressing as the digital platform economy expands. Drawing on Cognitive Appraisal Theory and Persistent Cognition Theory, this study develops a dual-pathway model integrating online immediate and offline sustained cognition, using two-wave questionnaire data from 320 riders in Changsha. Results show algorithmic platform management promotes risk-taking behavior via perceived algorithmic control and emotional rumination, while inhibiting it through proble

Sex differences in the association between repetitive negative thinking and neurofilament light.

Emerging evidence suggests that repetitive negative thinking (RNT; i.e., worry and ruminative brooding) is associated with biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease. Given that women have a greater risk of many neurodegenerative diseases, this study investigated whether worry and brooding are associated with general neurodegeneration and whether associations differ by sex. Exploratory analyses examined whether allostatic load, a marker of chronic stress, mediates any observed relationships. Baseline data from 134 cognitively healthy older adults in the Age-Well clinical trial were utilised. Worry and

Facial emotion recognition in patients with depression compared to healthy controls when using human avatars.

The negative, mood-congruent cognitive bias described in depression, as well as excessive rumination, have been found to interfere with emotional processing. This study focuses on the assessment of facial recognition of emotions in patients with depression through a new set of dynamic virtual faces (DVFs). The sample consisted of 54 stable patients compared to 54 healthy controls. The experiment consisted in an emotion recognition task using non-immersive virtual reality (VR) with DVFs of six basic emotions and neutral expression. Patients with depression showed a worst performance in facial a

Telework and Face-to-Face Work during COVID-19 Confinement: The Predictive Factors of Work-Related Stress from a Holistic Point of View.

This article explores the socio-labor conditions in which people worked during confinement, analyzing the predictors of work-related stress, according to work modality (face-to-face or teleworking), from a holistic and quantitative (n = 328) point of view. To identify predictors of stress, correlational analyses and multiple hierarchical regressions were conducted with individual, organizational, and societal variables. Furthermore, to analyze the possible modulating role of gender, caregiving, and the level of responsibility in organizations in the relationship between predictor variables and

Difficulties in emotion regulation: The role of repetitive negative thinking and metacognitive beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Using the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model as a basis, this study explored whether, in both general population and clinical samples, metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking (i.e., rumination and worry) are associated with higher levels of emotion dysregulation. METHODS: 395 participants from the general population and 388 outpatients seeking psychological treatment were recruited. Emotion dysregulation, metacognitive beliefs, rumination, worry, anxiety, depression, personality disorders were assessed. ANOVA and Welch's tests, correlation and path analyses we

Borderline Personality Traits and Emotion Regulation Strategies in Adolescents: The Role of Implicit Theories.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is associated with emotion dysregulation. The emotion regulation strategies people adopt may depend on one's belief about emotion as either fixed or changeable (termed "implicit theory"). We test this experimentally by modifying beliefs about emotions using virtual reality (VR). A sample of 29 adolescents (ages 14-17 years) were recruited from two adolescent inpatient units for an uncontrolled pilot trial of a new brief intervention. We measured BPD traits, beliefs about emotion, treatment preference, cognitive reappraisal and rumination, before the VR gam

Adjusting Identities When Times Change: The Role of Self-Compassion.

Adjusting identity standards may be preferable to relentless pursuit or abandonment of an identity when facing an identity-challenging life transition. Self-compassion (SC) can help people adjust to challenges. The authors examined whether SC was associated with identity adjustment, exercise, and the moderating effect of identity-behavior discrepancy in 279 women exercisers who reported reduced exercise in motherhood. Participants completed the Self-Compassion Scale and reported the extent of and reflected on their identity discrepant behavior (reduced exercise). Reactions to discrepancy (acce
