The application of ambulatory electrocardiography to identify obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients was evaluated using time-domain and frequency-domain analyses of heart rate variability (HRV). For this, overnight sleep pattern was investigated in 95 individuals (48 OSAS(+) patients and 47 OSAS(-) controls) by polysomnography and 24-h ambulatory electrocardiography. Apnea scores were calculated using two different HRV analyses. Average age and body mass index, and percentages of men and of patients with history of hypertension and/or diabetes were higher in study group as compared

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that CPAP has a substantial impact on daytime symptoms and quality of life (QOL). It remains unclear which outcome measures best identify real CPAP effects and carry independent information.
METHODS: One hundred-two men with moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea were randomized to either "real" or "sham" CPAP for one month. Outcome measures were subjective sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS]) and QOL measures includiig SF-36/SF-12 and Calgary Sleep Apnea Quality of Life Index (SAQLI). The bed partner's QOL and rating of patient's response

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharynx, soft palate, adenoid tissue, tongue, and hyoid bone when a mandibular repositioning appliance was used for managing patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Lateral cephalograms of 45 adult obstructive sleep apnea patients from the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic were taken without the appliance and some days later with the device in the mouth. This device was used during sleep for improving patients' respiration. Twenty-four cephalometric variables were evaluated. When the appliance was in the mouth, significant alterations (P < .001) were observ

PURPOSE: Cognitive impairment in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may not be adequately captured by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). This study evaluated large language models (LLMs) for identifying Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)-defined cognitive risk from demographic, polysomnographic, and MRI reports.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 111 adults with PSG-confirmed OSA. GPT-5.2 and Gemini 3 Pro were benchmarked against the AHI rule, structured logistic regression models, a gradient-boosted tree, and TF-IDF models. The primary outcome was MoCA < 26.
RESULTS: 73 participants (65.8%) met

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common but underdiagnosed sleep disorder characterized by intermittent hypoxia and systemic inflammation. Soluble low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1 (sLRP-1) is a multifunctional receptor involved in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and vascular regulation, potentially linking metabolic and vascular pathways to OSA pathophysiology.
METHODS: This case-control study included 180 adults presenting with snoring symptoms. Participants underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG) and were categorized into OSA (AHI ≥ 5/h, n = 100) and non-OS

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) caused by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exacerbates renal dysfunction, fibrosis, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. This study investigates the renoprotective effects and mechanisms of atraric acid (AA), a natural compound from oakmoss with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, against CIH-induced renal injury. A CIH mouse model was established, with groups including control, CIH, and CIH mice treated with AA (5, 10, 20 mg/kg). Mice underwent daily 8-h hypoxia exposure for 4 weeks. Renal pathology was assessed via HE and Masson staining, wh

Background Obese patients are at an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery is an important therapeutic measure in obese patients for the management of weight and comorbidities. Data are scarce in inner-city Hispanic and Black patients who undergo bariatric surgery, which eventually leads to health disparity in this minority population. Differences between patients with and without OSA have not been assessed in this population. This study aims to answer these questions. Methodology The study was conducted in a high-volume hospital in the Bronx,

BACKGROUND: Residual neuromuscular blockade can be associated with serious postoperative complications. Sugammadex is a newer neuromuscular blocking drug (NMBD) reversal agent that rapidly and completely reverses rocuronium. Whether sugammadex has any advantages over neostigmine in morbidly obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is unclear. We investigated whether sugammadex would reduce discharge time from the operating room (OR) compared with neostigmine in morbidly obese patients with OSA undergoing bariatric surgery.
METHODS: This was a prospective, double-blinded randomized co
