Social, Educational and Medical Aspects after Cataract Surgery of Bilaterally Blind Children in Kinshasa-Perception of Parents and Children.

The study investigated the influence of bilateral cataract surgery on the social and educational development of previously bilaterally blind children in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the prevalence of blindness due to cataract is higher than in high-income countries. The views of both, parents and children, were evaluated with structured interviews based on a newly developed questionnaire related to surgery, follow-up, and family life after surgery. The mean age of the children at interview was 14.4 ± 8.1 years, with 27 females and 26 males. Satisfaction with the outcome of the surgery was r

Dignity, Social Reintegration of Prisoners, and the New Penal Power: European Human Rights, Experiences of Belgian Prisoners, and Professional Practices.

Over the last 30 years, prisoners' dignity and fundamental rights have increasingly been protected by European human rights bodies such as the European Court of Human Rights and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. This protection is aimed particularly at the traditional power relations between prisoners and uniformed staff. More recently, social reintegration of prisoners has also been recognized by these European human rights standards as a fundamental element of human dignity and an equally important aim of imprisonment as re

Future perspectives of robot psychiatry: can communication robots assist psychiatric evaluation in the COVID-19 pandemic era?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Direct face-to-face interview between a psychiatrist and a patient is crucial in psychiatric evaluation, however, such traditional interviews are becoming difficult to conduct because of the infection risk in the COVID-19 era. As telepsychiatry, video interviews using internet are suggested to be useful to evaluate and assist individuals with mental disorders. However, some patients especially with social phobia, depression, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) hesitate to use even such face-to-face-like tools. Communication robots have been proposed as future assistant tools

Facing the National Recovery and Resilience Plan: Sources of Data, Indicators, and Participatory Strategies in Healthcare and Social Fields.

Innovation in governance and services should be the target of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Monitoring processes, impacts, and outcomes requires a system of new indicators that are practical to collect. Secondary data sources, their availability, and their information potential should be evaluated, and primary sources should be implemented to supplement traditional disease surveillance. This work highlights the most relevant aspects for bridging the mismatching between complex community needs and current health/social supply and how those aspects could be faced. As a resul

Behavioral, Emotional and School Adjustment in Adolescents with and without Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Is Related to Family Involvement.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) refers to a language delay in the absence of other underlying causes. Individuals with DLD can also present other problems related to behavioral, scholarly, and emotional aspects of their daily lives because of their language difficulties. Moreover, these difficulties could be influenced by family and socioeconomic characteristics. Twenty-eight bilingual adolescents with and without DLD in typical schools were followed from childhood to adolescence. At age five, language and cognitive variables were assessed. In addition, language, behavior, emotional and

The important role of dACC in shyness.

Shyness is often characterized by the avoidance of social contact, the fear of other people's evaluations and a lack of self-esteem. Generally, individuals with high levels of shyness are more likely to suffer from psychosomatic stress and social anxiety. However, the structural brain basis of individual shyness among healthy people has not yet been investigated with DTI (diffusion tensor imaging). Thus, in this study, we investigated the relationship between FA (fractional anisotropy), WMV (white matter volume), GMV (gray matter volume) and shyness in a large healthy sample of 318 college stu

[Exercise therapy and bracing in patients with osteoporotic compression vertebral fractures].

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (VF) have a negative impact on quality of life within a year after injury. A recent-onset vertebral body compression fracture in the presence of osteoporosis (OP) is generally accompanied by acute back pain, hypokinesia, and a reduction in daily physical and social activities, further leading to social isolation. Rehabilitation measures are of particular importance to restore quality of life in OP patients, especially in the people who have a history of fractures. Exercise therapy is the mainstay of management in patients with OP and VF; however, pain and limit

A qualitative study of hand hygiene compliance among health care workers in intensive care units.

INTRODUCTION: Studies indicate that adherence to hand hygiene guidelines is at suboptimal levels. We aimed to explore the reasons for poor hand hygiene compliance. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative study based on the Theory of Planned Behavior as a framework in explaining compliance, consisting four focus group discussions and six in-depth interviews. RESULTS: Participants mostly practiced hand hygiene depending on the sense of "dirtiness" and "cleanliness". Some of the participants indicated that on-job training delivered by the infection control team changed their perception of "emotionally" base

Body Mass Index and Subjective Social Status: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective social status (SSS), or perceived social status, may explain, in part, the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and obesity. The objective of this study was to test whether SSS mediates the relationship between two indicators of SES (income and education) and body mass index (BMI). METHODS: A cross-sectional, structural equation path analysis was applied to the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study (n = 2,624). The analysis tested whether SSS (MacArthur scale), education, and income were associated with BMI at the year 20 examination

[Pedophilia--a review of literature, casuistics, doubts].

The main purpose of this article is presentation of several basic issues related to the phenomenon of child sexual molesters and recognition of pedophilia as a significant social problem. The article, supplemented by casuistic illustration showing adolescents with sexual behavior disorders is giving rise to the following question: do they progress in their inappropriate behaviors to grow into adult molesters or do they stop anywhere along the way of their development? Casuistry, in the intention of the authors, is the background for discussion about prevention of child sexual abuse. This artic

Individual, psychosocial, and social correlates of unprotected anal intercourse in a new generation of young men who have sex with men in New York City.

OBJECTIVES: We examined associations of individual, psychosocial, and social factors with unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among young men who have sex with men in New York City. METHODS: Using baseline assessment data from 592 young men who have sex with men participating in an ongoing prospective cohort study, we conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine the associations between covariates and likelihood of recently engaging in UAI with same-sex partners. RESULTS: Nineteen percent reported recent UAI with a same-sex partner. In multivariable models, being in a curre

Patient perceptions of a mobile cancer support unit in South Wales.

Many patients have to travel long distances to receive treatment and support for cancer, which can lead to increased anxiety and fatigue. Tenovus, the cancer charity, working with the NHS, has developed a new concept of closer-to-home delivery for chemotherapy and other cancer support - a mobile cancer support unit (Bus). Researchers at Cardiff University evaluated the Bus during its first year of operation. The evaluation aimed to determine who was using the Bus and to explore patients' perceptions about having their appointments on the Bus. Data were collected from patients, social care clie

Racial Prejudice and Spending on Drug Rehabilitation: The Role of Attitudes Toward Blacks and Latinos.

We enhance understanding of the prejudice-induced "color coding" phenomenon among whites by determining whether racial and ethnic prejudices are associated with a previously unexplored policy outcome, spending on drug rehabilitation. We examine attitudes toward both blacks and Latinos; the latter is a group largely ignored in previous research. We assess the impact of several types of racial/ethnic views, including those that manifest modern/indirect prejudice (e.g., stereotypes about violence, individualistic causal attributions) and those that reflect social-distance-based traditional prejud

Men who have sex with men and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.

Globally, men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to bear a high burden of HIV infection. In sub-Saharan Africa, same-sex behaviours have been largely neglected by HIV research up to now. The results from recent studies, however, indicate the widespread existence of MSM groups across Africa, and high rates of HIV infection, HIV risk behaviour, and evidence of behavioural links between MSM and heterosexual networks have been reported. Yet most African MSM have no safe access to relevant HIV/AIDS information and services, and many African states have not begun to recognise or address the needs

Effectiveness of a peer-support community in addiction recovery: participation as intervention.

The main purpose of the study was to determine whether a peer-support community programme would reduce relapse rates among clients recovering from substance addictions and homelessness and result in increased perceived community affiliation, supportive behaviours, self-determination and quality of life. Mixed methods were utilized including semi-structured interviews, participant observation and a pretest/post-test to evaluate changes on the quality of life rating, the Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Survey, and the Volitional Questionnaire. Data from the prior year's permanent supportiv

The physical, social and psychological impact of priapism on adult males with sickle cell disorder.

Priapism is defined as prolonged and painful penile erection that does not subside on orgasm. It is considered to be a urological emergency. However, patients do not always seek prompt medical help. The incidence of priapism is increased by sickle cell disease, where it is a complication of the characteristic sickling of the red blood cells. Little is known about the psychological or social implications of this complication or the strategies that sickle cell patients use to manage it. A qualitative study was carried out in order to investigate these topics. Semi-structured interviews were carr
