Species-specific isotope dilution analysis of mono-, di, and tri-butyltin compounds in sediment using gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with synthesized 118Sn-enriched butyltins.

A species-specific isotope dilution (ID) method is described for the determination of mono-, di, and tri-butyltin compounds in sediment by gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP-MS), where the mixture of 118Sn-enriched butyltin compounds synthesized in our laboratory was used as a spike. A correction method for the mass bias, a quantitative extraction of the butyltins from sediment, and an assay for the concentration of the standard solution for the reverse ID procedure were investigated to achieve a reliable ID analysis. The spike solution was added with tri-p

Ecological and toxicological effects of inorganic nitrogen pollution in aquatic ecosystems: A global assessment.

We provide a global assessment, with detailed multi-scale data, of the ecological and toxicological effects generated by inorganic nitrogen pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Our synthesis of the published scientific literature shows three major environmental problems: (1) it can increase the concentration of hydrogen ions in freshwater ecosystems without much acid-neutralizing capacity, resulting in acidification of those systems; (2) it can stimulate or enhance the development, maintenance and proliferation of primary producers, resulting in eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems; (3) it can rea

The Effect of the combination therapy of statin and dapagliflozin, a selective inhibitor of sodium_glucose Co-transporter type 2, in the treatment of Ischemic heart disease with heart failure: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Gliflozins (SGLT2 inhibitors) and statins are key treatments commonly used in patients with ischemic heart failure. Although both are well known for diminishing cardiovascular risk and heart failure-related mortality, the possible synergistic benefits of using them together have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to correlate serum levels of Statins and SGLT2i in addition to estimate the ejection fraction and selected laboratory parameters to indicate the synergistic effect of their combination in ischemic heart disease patients. METHODS: In this prospective, randomiz

Wound healing outcomes in diabetic kidney disease patients receiving SGLT2 inhibitor therapy: a prospective propensity score-matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The remarkable cardiorenal benefits of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have positioned these agents as cornerstone therapies for diabetic kidney disease (DKD). However, theoretical concerns regarding glycosuria-mediated effects on tissue perfusion have left clinicians uncertain about their safety in patients with active wounds. We conducted a prospective cohort study to characterize wound healing outcomes in this vulnerable population. METHODS: Between January 2018 and December 2023, we prospectively enrolled 247 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, estimated gl

Finerenone Prescriptions in the United States (2021-2024) by Physician Specialty: Analysis of Use and Potential in the Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Space.

BACKGROUND: Finerenone, a nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, has demonstrated greater receptor selectivity and fewer adverse effects compared with older mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists. Clinical trials support its efficacy in reducing kidney disease progression, cardiovascular events, and heart failure outcomes across various patient populations; however, anecdotally, the drug appears infrequently used in clinical practice. METHODS: A serial, cross-sectional analysis of IQVIA's National Prescription Audit, which covers >70% of US outpatient prescription activity, was c

Dapagliflozin Reduces Kidney Inflammation in Alport Syndrome by Inhibiting the Stimulator of IFN Genes Pathway in Renal Tubular Epithelial Cells.

KEY POINTS: Dapagliflozin reduces proteinuria in patients with Alport syndrome. Dapagliflozin plays an anti-inflammatory role by inhibiting the stimulator of IFN genes pathway in tubular epithelial cells of Alport syndrome mice. BACKGROUND: Alport syndrome (AS) is a hereditary kidney disease caused by COL4A3/4/5 mutations that lack of effective treatments. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors have demonstrated renal and cardiovascular protective effects in patients with CKD; however, their long-term effects in patients with AS and the underlying mechanisms remain to be clarified. Cost-effectiveness analysis of empagliflozin as an add-on to the standard of care for chronic kidney disease management in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects a significant proportion of the population leading to a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems and societies. Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been shown to slow CKD progression and reduce cardiovascular risks in patients regardless of their diabetes status, leading to cost-savings and health benefits for patients with CKD. Currently, published cost-effectiveness studies in the UK and Southeast Asia demonstrate a significantly high value of adding empagliflozin in CKD management. This study aims t

Arsenic-induced transition of thymic inflammation-to-fibrosis involves Stat3-Twist1 interaction: Melatonin to the rescue.

Groundwater arsenic is a notorious toxicant and exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations persists as a healthcare burden across the world. Arsenic has been reported to jeopardize the normal functioning of the immune system, but there are still gaps in the understanding of thymic T cell biology. Immunotoxic influence of arsenic in thymic integrity demands a potent restorative molecule. The objectives of this study were to examine key signaling cross-talks associated with arsenic-induced immune alterations in the thymus and propose melatonin as a potential candidate against immunologi
