Contrast agents for radiography and computed tomography (CT) scans are substances that can enhance the contrast of blood vessels and soft tissue with detailed imaging information of the diseased sites. However, the large doses, short circulation time and adverse effects are the intrinsic limitations of CT contrast agents, preventing their extended and safe use in the clinical setting. Bismuth nanoparticles (NPs) have gained attention for the high X-ray absorption of bismuth elements with acceptable biocompatibility, showing their potential to be translated into commercialized CT contrast agent

Compared to positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), the uptake of PET- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been slow, even more so in clinical practice compared to the (pre-)clinical research setting. However, for applications in musculoskeletal (MSK) research, the combination of PET and MRI into a single modality offers attractive advantages over other imaging modalities. Most importantly, MRI has exquisite soft-tissue detail without the use of contrast agents or ionizing radiation, superior bone marrow visualization, and an extensive spectrum of distinct multiparametric a

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare genetic disorder in which patients progressive muscle deterioration and low life expectancy. Since DMD has no cure, treatment slows the deterioration process using corticosteroids and other medications, including oral bisphosphonates (BP). These drugs can lead to toxicities in both soft and hard tissues. The objective of this study was to present cytological changes in DMD patients, comparing to young, healthy individuals. Cytological smears were obtained from buccal mucosa from nine DMD patients and five healthy patients. The Papanicolaou technique

Acute appendicitis is considered one of the most common surgical emergencies with low morbidity and mortality. However, delay in the diagnosis may lead to perforation of the appendix. Hence, complications may arise, including necrotizing fasciitis, a rare complication of a perforated appendix. We present a case of perforated appendicitis complicated by necrotizing fasciitis leading to rapid deterioration. A 75-year-old male patient presented to our emergency room with a three-day history of right lower quadrant abdominal pain and abdominal distention. On admission, computed tomography (CT) sca

BACKGROUND: Sudden onset of acute torticollis in children is rare and is usually diagnosed as atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation (AARS). The common treatment for acute AARS without neurological symptoms is halter traction in conjunction with muscle relaxant and sedative agents, followed by cervicothoracic orthotic immobilization. To the best of our knowledge, a case of acute AARS treatment with high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) has not yet been reported so far.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to report a case of acute AARS treatment with HILT successfully and to discuss about the clinical effect of HILT

BACKGROUND: Colorectal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALToma), a rare kind of nongastric MALToma, lacks consensus on its endoscopic features and standard therapies. According to previous studies on the clinical characteristics and outcomes of colorectal MALToma, endoscopic resection remains a good therapeutic strategy.
CASE SUMMARY: A 71-year-old woman suffered intermittent hematochezia for 1 mo, accompanied with abdominal pains but without weight loss, fever, chills or fatigue. Colonoscopy showed a massive hemispheric mass with rough and hyperemic mucosa in the lower rectum. Na

BACKGROUND Ganglioneuromas are differentiated tumors originating from the neural crest. Although their occurrence is rare, they usually involve the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneum. However, they rarely occur in the adrenal gland. Adrenal ganglioneuromas (AGNs) are hormonally inactive tumors that are mostly discovered incidentally during abdominal imaging performed for unrelated reasons. As preoperative diagnosis is challenging owing to their heterogeneous nature, adrenalectomy is the most effective method to ascertain an AGN diagnosis. We report a case of left adrenal ganglioneuroma

The authors report a case of a soldier who survived after shooting a blank round from a K2 rifle into the oral cavity. For committing suicide, a 22-year-old male soldier shot a K2 rifle into his oral cavity. Because the first shot was a blank fire, he received an injury to his oral cavity, especially to his palate. On arrival hospital via air evacuation, the patient's vital signs were relatively stable and Glasgow Coma Scale score was 15. Profound epistaxis was noted from both nostrils, and his mouth was filled with blood. Intubation was performed immediately, followed by tracheostomy. On compu

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare disease characterized by fibroinflammatory tissue proliferation in the retroperitoneum. It results in a chronic inflammatory and fibrosis condition, possibly leading to compression of the retroperitoneal structures, especially to encasement of the ureters and the inferior vena cava. It may have an idiopathic or a secondary origin. Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is one of the rare conditions described among the secondary forms.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a new case of RPF in a patient with AS presented with acute abdominal pain radiatin

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pulmonary arterial intimal sarcoma (PAIS) is a rare malignant soft tissue tumor that is difficult to differentiate from pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). Therefore, pre-operative diagnosis is often difficult. However, recent advances in fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) have enabled the use of standardized uptake values (SUVs) for the differential diagnosis of PAIS from PTE, and the frequency of diagnosis of PAIS has increased. Here, we report a case of PAIS that was difficult to differentiate from PTE despite using FDG-PET.

Although hemangiomas are common in the head and neck area, they are uncommon in the temporal bone. External auditory canal (EAC) hemangiomas are a relatively uncommon otologic condition. In the English literature, only 29 cases of temporal bone hemangioma have been reported. We also present the case of a 32-year-old male patient who presented with an 8-month history of decreased hearing, tinnitus, and aural fullness on the right side. Otoscopic examination of the right ear revealed a smooth, oval, well-circumscribed, reddish, pulsatile, nontender mass, which was about 1 cm in diameter and occu

Pancreatic lesions are more commonly identified nowadays with the widespread use of imaging investigations. Pancreatic lesions are heterogeneous groups of pathologies with different behavior and prognosis. It is quite difficult to differentiate these lesions because of the shared clinical manifestation and the overlapping imaging features of these lesions. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with a complaint of a 3-month history of epigastric abdominal pain radiating to her back. She reported a gradual increase in the severity of the pain. She described it as sharp in quali

Acquired atresia of the external ear canal is a narrowing of the external ear canal (EAC) that appears obstructed by fibrous tissue or bone tissue. Acquired atresia has two different phases: wet and dry stage. Computed tomography (CT) scan may show a scan where soft tissue fills EAC. Treatment may be medical and/or surgical. The surgical treatment of choice is represented by canaloplasty with a skin-free flap. To our knowledge, no article has reported data on the analysis of vascularization of acquired atresia of the external ear canal and vascularization of skin flap during follow-up with nar

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary intracranial tumor and originates from the small pool of adult neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPCs). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of brain tumors, gliomas are classified into grades I-IV, and GBM is defined as the highest grade (IV). GBM can be disseminated by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), but extracranial metastasis is rare. Additionally, the pathway and mechanism involved remain unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of left temporal lobe GBM with multiple bone metastases and soft tissue

OBJECTIVES: Many patients die due to vascular, gastrointestinal lumen problems, and coronary heart diseases. Synthetic vessels that are made of biodegradable-nanofiber polymers have significant properties such as proper biodegradability and efficient physical properties such as high strength and flexibility. Some of the best options for supporting cells in soft tissue engineering and design are applications of thermoplastic polyurethane polymer in the venous tissue. In this study, the first nanoparticle-reinforced polymeric artificial prosthesis was designed and tested to be used in the human

INTRODUCTION: Schwannomas are well-differentiated, benign tumours that originate from the Schwann cells of nerve sheaths. They constitute 25-45% of all the head and neck tumours and can cause significant morbidity depending on the site of origin. The pterygopalatine fossa is the rarest site of involvement, with only a few cases reported in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is the case of a 46-year-old male who presented with a twelve [12] month history of left-sided facial pain and progressive swelling. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reve

This review focuses on a rare group of steroids and triterpenoids that share common properties as regulators of lipid metabolism. This group of compounds is divided by the type of chemical structure, and they represent: aromatic steroids, steroid phosphate esters, highly oxygenated steroids such as steroid endoperoxides and hydroperoxides, α,β-epoxy steroids, and secosteroids. In addition, subgroups of carbon-bridged steroids, neo steroids, miscellaneous steroids, as well as synthetic steroids containing heteroatoms S (epithio steroids), Se (selena steroids), Te (tellura steroids), and At (ast
