Educational needs of junior doctors caring for hospitalised older adults.

BACKGROUND: Junior doctors provide much of the day-to-day medical care for hospitalised older patients. However, there is little formal training after medical school to prepare them for the complex assessment and management required. This gap in postgraduate education raises concerns about preparedness and confidence, yet little research has examined junior doctors' views on their learning needs, teaching preferences and factors affecting their education. Understanding these perspectives can inform targeted educational strategies to enhance care of older patients. OBJECTIVE: To explore junior…

A global overview of anatomical science education and its present and future role in biomedical curricula.

The four main anatomical sciences, gross anatomy, histology, neuroanatomy, and embryology, are fundamental subjects for most health professi … similar pressures, including expectations of curricular integration and reduced time for anatomical teaching. Student-centered teaching approaches and e-learning technologies have been adopted across many regions, transforming how educators engage their learners. Evaluation of using a graphic novel Vivian in nursing curriculum from the perspectives of nurse educators: a three-country qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Graphic novels - full-length stories published in comic-strip format are a proven method for putting student nurses 'into the shoes' of health service users and offer nurse educators an alternative to traditional modes of instruction. Their use can support the teaching of palliative care related topics, which remains a challenge in nurse education. This study aimed to explore the views and perspectives of nurse educators about how the graphic novel Vivian could be used to prepare undergraduate nursing students for palliative care and beyond. METHODS: Focus groups and individual in…

Effect of the Emory Healthy Kitchen Collaborative on Employee Health Habits and Body Weight: A 12-Month Workplace Wellness Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Teaching kitchens are being used to facilitate lifestyle changes with a focus on culinary and nutrition programs to improve health behaviors. Less is known regarding their use as a worksite wellness program and their influence on employees' quality of life, body weight, and adoption of healthy behaviors. We evaluated changes in self-reported healthy behaviors, overall health, and weight during a one-year multidisciplinary teaching kitchen program. METHODS: Thirty-eight benefits-eligible employees were recruited, screened based on a priori eligibility criteria that prioritized el…

Early sepsis mortality prediction model based on interpretable machine learning approach: development and validation study.

Sepsis triggers a harmful immune response due to infection, causing high mortality. Predicting sepsis outcomes early is vital. Despite machine learning's (ML) use in medical research, local validation within the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database is lacking. We aimed to devise a prognostic model, leveraging MIMIC-IV data, to predict sepsis mortality and validate it in a Chinese teaching hospital. MIMIC-IV provided patient data, split into training and internal validation sets. Four ML models logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), deep neural net…

Development of a 3D-printed testicular cancer model for testicular examination education.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in young males. Testicular examination is a non-invasive and inexpensive means of detecting testicular cancer at an early stage. In this project, a set of 3D-printed models was developed to facilitate teaching testicular examination and improving understanding of testicular malignancies among patients and medical learners. METHODS: Five scrotum models were designed: a control model with healthy testes, and four models containing a healthy testicle and a testicle with an endophytic mass of varying size. The anatomy, text…

Queer-Decolonial Pedagogy: Undoing Binaries Through Intergenerational Learning.

The most commonly used curricula for teaching gender and sexual difference come from white, middle-class, public school contexts. Little is available for community-based efforts with LGBTQ+ youth and adults who are people of color, immigrants, Indigenous, and working-class. This article explores the development, practices, and impacts of a queer-decolonial pedagogy, focusing on a unique after school program created by queer and trans educator-researchers. This program focused on preventing intimate partner and sexual violence, social justice, solidarity across difference, and peer mentorship. …

The Benefits of Tying Yourself in Knots: Unraveling the Learning Mechanisms of Guided Discovery Learning in an Open Surgical Skills Course.

PURPOSE: Teaching technical skills through the use of guided discovery learning (GDL) is an ongoing topic of research. In this approach, learners practice and struggle before receiving formal instruction. This has shown promise in other domains of learning, yet in the realm of procedural skills, clarity is still needed. This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating efficacy and mechanisms relating to application for a GDL approach in teaching basic surgical skills. METHOD: In 2018, young surgical trainees (N = 16) undertook a 6-week open surgical course applying the principles of GD…

Educating health science students about disability: Teachers' perspectives on curricular gaps.

BACKGROUND: People living with disabilities are significantly more likely than their peers to find health professionals' skills and facilities inadequate. The 66th World Health Assembly called for better health care for people with disabilities including more inclusive health services and a stronger focus on professional training. OBJECTIVE: To explore how teachers at a New Zealand university perceived the need, approaches, and systemic challenges to enhance disability education for health professionals in training. METHODS: Qualitative analysis of interviews with 11 key informants teaching …

Epidemiology, prognostic factors, and outcome of trauma patients admitted in a Brazilian intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is a major cause of hospital admissions and is associated with manifold complications and high mortality rates. However, data on intensive care unit (ICU) admissions are scarce in developing and low-income countries, where its incidence has been increasing. OBJECTIVES: To analyze epidemiological and clinical factors and outcomes in adult trauma patients admitted to the ICU of a public teaching hospital in a developing country as well as to identify risk factors for complications in the ICU. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective cohort of adult trauma patients admitted to the…

OBJECTIVES: Multidrug resistance (MDR) and emergence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) among uropathogenic Escherichia coli have been reported worldwide, but there was no information on the detection of blaCTX-M-15 in major teaching hospitals in Libya. The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of CTX-M-15 β-lactamases producers isolated from five teaching hospitals in Tripoli, Libya. METHODS: A total of 346 urine samples were collected from hospitalized patients in five teaching hospitals with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI). Phenotypic confirmation of ESBLs …

A Multi-Institutional Longitudinal Faculty Development Program in Humanism Supports the Professional Development of Faculty Teachers.

The authors describe the first 11 academic years (2005-2006 through 2016-2017) of a longitudinal, small-group faculty development program for strengthening humanistic teaching and role modeling at 30 U.S. and Canadian medical schools that continues today. During the yearlong program, small groups of participating faculty met twice monthly with a local facilitator for exercises in humanistic teaching, role modeling, and related topics that combined narrative reflection with skills training using experiential learning techniques. The program focused on the professional development of its partici…

Does formal education and training of staff reduce the operation rate for fractures of the distal radius?

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the distal radius are one of the most common extremity fractures, and operation rates are increasing. Staff within our unit felt that formal teaching, particularly of new medical staff, with regards to fracture reduction and appropriate cast application could result in a reduction in operation rates. METHODS: Retrospective data was extracted from FORD (Fracture Outcome and Research Database), including: number of fractures, number of fractures undergoing ORIF, fracture configuration, patient demographics, and mechanism of injury. All patients undergoing ORIF had their…
