Bidirectional propagation of low frequency oscillations over the human hippocampal surface.

The hippocampus is diversely interconnected with other brain systems along its axis. Cycles of theta-frequency activity are believed to propagate from the septal to temporal pole, yet it is unclear how this one-way route supports the flexible cognitive capacities of this structure. We leveraged novel thin-film microgrid arrays conformed to the human hippocampal surface to track neural activity two-dimensionally in vivo. All oscillation frequencies identified between 1-15 Hz propagated across the tissue. Moreover, they dynamically shifted between two roughly opposite directions oblique to the l

Encoding of Partially Occluded and Occluding Objects in Primate Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Object segmentation-the process of parsing visual scenes-is essential for object recognition and scene understanding. We investigated how responses of neurons in macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex contribute to object segmentation under partial occlusion. Specifically, we asked whether IT responses to occluding and occluded objects are bound together as in the visual image or linearly separable reflecting their segmentation. We recorded the activity of 121 IT neurons while two male animals performed a shape discrimination task under partial occlusion. We found that for a majority (60%) of n

Distinct patterns of hippocampal activity associated with color and spatial source memory.

The hippocampus is known to be involved in source memory across a wide variety of stimuli and source types. Thus, source memory activity in the hippocampus is thought to be domain-general such that different types of source information are similarly processed in the hippocampus. However, there is some evidence of domain-specificity for spatial and temporal source information. The current fMRI study aimed to determine whether patterns of activity in the hippocampus differed for two types of visual source information: spatial location and background color. Participants completed three runs of a

The neural foundation of associative memory: a dynamic functional connectivity study for right-handed young adults.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is the core neural construction related to associative memory. This study sought to explore the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) between the subdivisions of MTL and other regions in the whole brain. Additionally, it sought to determine relationships between connectivity stability and associative memory function, to elucidate the neural foundation of associative memory from the perspectives of dFC. A Wechsler Memory Scale China revised edition (WMS-RC) measurement and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were conducted to clarify adults' func…

Functional alterations in cortical processing of speech in glioma-infiltrated cortex.

Recent developments in the biology of malignant gliomas have demonstrated that glioma cells interact with neurons through both paracrine signaling and electrochemical synapses. Glioma-neuron interactions consequently modulate the excitability of local neuronal circuits, and it is unclear the extent to which glioma-infiltrated cortex can meaningfully participate in neural computations. For example, gliomas may result in a local disorganization of activity that impedes the transient synchronization of neural oscillations. Alternatively, glioma-infiltrated cortex may retain the ability to engage

Self-awareness for financial decision making abilities is linked to right temporal cortical thickness in older adults.

Everyday financial decision making and the awareness of the integrity of one's financial decision making abilities (or financial awareness) are both critical to study in older adults as they can help identify those at risk for making suboptimal financial decisions and prevent financial loss. In the current study, we examined the cognitive and cortical thickness correlates of financial decision making and financial awareness in 59 community-dwelling participants co-enrolled in a larger study (mean age=68.35 years (SD=5.5), mean education=15.91 (SD=2.36), 61% = women, 67% = White, 30% = Black pa

Deep learning and radiomics based automatic diagnosis of hippocampal sclerosis.

Accurate and rapid segmentation of the hippocampus can help doctors perform intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) preoperative evaluations to identify good surgical candidates. This study aims to establish a radiomics system for the automatic diagnosis of hippocampal sclerosis with the help of machine learning. A total of 240 cases were analysed to develop a diagnostic model. First, an automatic hippocampal segmentation process was established that exploits a priori knowledge of the relatively fixed location of the hippocampus in brain partitions, as well as a deep-learning segmentation net…

Epilepsy.

GKNS has been introduced as an alternative to microsurgery for the treatment of certain types of focal epilepsy. It was first noted that epilepsy associated with AVMs often improved before the obliteration of the vascular lesion. It was subsequently shown that the treatment could be effective in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) producing remission in around 60% of patients, provided the treatment was carried out as originally designed. GKNS has also been useful in the treatment of gelastic epilepsy associated with hypothalamic hamartomas.

Extensive cortical functional connectivity of the human hippocampal memory system.

The cortical connections of the human hippocampal memory system are fundamental to understanding its operation in health and disease, especially in the context of the great development of the human cortex. The functional connectivity of the human hippocampal system was analyzed in 172 participants imaged at 7T in the Human Connectome Project. The human hippocampus has high functional connectivity not only with the entorhinal cortex, but also with areas that are more distant in the ventral 'what' stream including the perirhinal cortex and temporal cortical visual areas. The additive effect of late-life depression and olfactory dysfunction on the risk of dementia was mediated by hypersynchronization of the hippocampus/fusiform gyrus.

Early detection of patients with late-life depression (LLD) with a high risk of developing dementia contributes to early intervention. Odor identification (OI) dysfunction serves as a marker for predicting dementia, but whether OI dysfunction increases the risk of dementia in LLD patients remains unclear. The present study aimed to explore the interactive effect of LLD and OI dysfunction on the risk of dementia and its underlying neuroimaging changes. One hundred and fifty-seven LLD patients and 101 normal controls were recruited, and data on their OI, cognition, activity of daily living (ADL)

Bilateral age-related atrophy in the planum temporale is associated with vowel discrimination difficulty in healthy older adults.

In this study we investigated the association between age-related brain atrophy and behavioural as well as electrophysiological markers of vowel perception in a sample of healthy younger and older adults with normal pure-tone hearing. Twenty-three older adults and 27 younger controls discriminated a set of vowels with altered second formants embedded in consonant-vowel syllables. Additionally, mismatch negativity (MMN) responses were recorded in a separate oddball paradigm with the same set of stimuli. A structural magnet resonance scan was obtained for each participant to determine cortical a

Unusual location of osteochondroma in the temporal region in a patient with functional pituitary adenoma.

Osteochondromas are common in the long bones and relatively rare in the head and neck regions. We herein report a case of a solitary temporal bone osteochondroma associated with a functional pituitary adenoma hypersecreting prolactin. The patient was a 48-year-old man with progressive, painless temporal swelling associated with gradual visual loss, gynaecomastia, erectile dysfunction, and loss of libido. A brain computed tomography scan with bone windows showed right temporal sessile bony expansion and a pituitary tumour. A pituitary function test revealed hyperprolactinaemia. His symptoms res

Dynamic population codes of multiplexed stimulus features in primate area MT.

The middle-temporal area (MT) of primate visual cortex is critical in the analysis of visual motion. Single-unit studies suggest that the response dynamics of neurons within area MT depend on stimulus features, but how these dynamics emerge at the population level, and how feature representations interact, is not clear. Here, we used multivariate classification analysis to study how stimulus features are represented in the spiking activity of populations of neurons in area MT of marmoset monkey. Using representational similarity analysis we distinguished the emerging representations of moving

Reading network in dyslexia: Similar, yet different.

Dyslexia is a developmental disorder characterized by reading and phonological difficulties, yet important questions remain regarding its underlying neural correlates. In this study, we used partial least squares (PLS), a multivariate analytic technique, to investigate the neural networks used by dyslexics while performing a word-rhyming task. Although the overall reading network was largely similar in dyslexics and typical readers, it did not correlate with behavior in the same way in the two groups. In particular, there was a positive association between reading performance and both right su

The role of the hippocampus in recognition memory.

Many theories of declarative memory propose that it is supported by partially separable processes underpinned by different brain structures. The hippocampus plays a critical role in binding together item and contextual information together and processing the relationships between individual items. By contrast, the processing of individual items and their later recognition can be supported by extrahippocampal regions of the medial temporal lobes (MTL), particularly when recognition is based on feelings of familiarity without the retrieval of any associated information. These theories are domain…

Multifocal dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumours associated with refractory epilepsy.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumours (DNET) are a common cause of tumour-associated epilepsy, and are usually located in the temporal lobes. We present a case of multifocal DNETs in both infra- and supra-tentorial locations, in a 23-year-old man with a coincident Type I Chiari malformation, presenting with medically refractory focal seizures. The extensive anatomical distribution of the lesions suggests a genetic component in their tumourigenesis.
