Cone Beam Computed Tomography Evaluation of Stafne Bone Defect: A Case Series and Review of Radiographic Features.

Background: Stafne's bone defects (SBDs) are rare, intraosseous lesions not only localized in the mandible but also asymptomatic by default and found occasionally at radiographically investigations. The size and location of these defects can vary, although most are located in the posterior mandible. Since anterior variants are less frequently reported, diagnostic imaging is crucial for distinguishing SBDs from other diseases. This case series documents both familiar and unusual appearances, highlighting the diagnostic value of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the evaluation of SBDs. Cas

Comparative evaluation of local drug delivery using tetracycline fibers and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in Stage II Grade B periodontitis: A clinico-microbiological study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal therapy aims to eliminate the periopathogens involved in disease progression to restore the lost form and function of the tooth-supporting structures. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional treatment, several adjunctive treatment modalities have been successfully used to treat moderate-to-severe periodontal diseases. The present study aims to comparatively evaluate the efficacy of locally delivered tetracycline fibers and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal treatment, focusing on the possibility of improving the clinical

Exploring the novel protein drug target BAG33339.1 of Porphyromonas gingivalis: an integrative subtractive proteomics and structural dynamics study.

Porphyromonas gingivalis, a gram-negative, bacterium interacts favourably with host subgingival biofilms to cause adult tooth decay and loss. Consequently, the host is infested with an uncontrollable microbial community and a compromised immune system, ultimately leading to tissue damage and bone resorption. P. gingivalis has also been known to cause cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, Alzheimer's disease, depression, prostate and digestive system cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and adverse pregnancy outcomes with high detection frequencies. Rising concerns in the recent past, highlight the i

Association between oral health and handgrip strength: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: It is well-established that muscle mass strength is a key factor in healthy physical functioning and is necessary for an active lifestyle. Handgrip strength (HGS) is the most convenient and cost-effective method for evaluating overall muscle strength in the body. Various studies have investigated the direct impact of inflammatory oral diseases on HGS, but with conflicting results. This systematic review investigated previous study data and analysed the causal factors in oral disease that affect HGS. METHODS: The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for article

Variants in mitochondrial disease genes are common causes of inherited peripheral neuropathies.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuropathies in mitochondrial disease are caused by mutations in nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, or in the mitochondrial genome. Whole exome or genome sequencing enable parallel testing of nuclear and mtDNA genes, and it has significantly advanced the genetic diagnosis of inherited diseases. Despite this, approximately 40% of all Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) cases remain undiagnosed. METHODS: The genome-phenome analysis platform (GPAP) in RD-Connect was utilised to create a cohort of 2087 patients with at least one Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) term suggest

The clinical characteristics of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease and its relation with inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a great imitator with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations that include dementia, parkinsonism, paroxysmal symptoms, peripheral neuropathy, and autonomic dysfunction. Hence, it may also masquerade as other diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Recent breakthroughs on neuroimaging, skin biopsy, and genetic testing have facilitated the diagnosis. However, early identification and effective treatment are still difficult in cases of NIID. OBJECTIVE: To further study the clini

A case report of concurrent occurrence of two inherited axonopathies within a family: the benefit of whole-exome sequencing.

Mutations in ERLIN2 and MFN2 lead to the development of spastic paraplegia-18 (SPG18) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth type-2A (CMT2A), respectively. These disorders are unified by the fact that both can be termed inherited axonopathies. With whole-exome sequencing (WES), more patients of neurological disorders with clinical overlaps receive a genetic result than ever before. This study describes an Iranian family who harbor mutations in ERLIN2 and MFN2, simultaneously. The proband was a 73-year old man who has experienced weakness and spasticity of lower limbs since late childhood. He was diagnosed wi

A novel mannose-containing sialoprotein adhesin involved in the binding of Candida albicans cells to DMBT1.

Candida albicans colonizes the oral cavity and causes oral candidiasis and early childhood caries synergistically with cariogenic Streptococcus mutans. Colonization of oral tissues with C. albicans is an essential step in the initiation of these infectious diseases. Deleted in malignant brain tumors 1 (DMBT1), also known as salivary agglutinin or gp-340, belongs to the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) superfamily and has important functions in innate immunity. In the oral cavity, DMBT1 causes microbial adherence to tooth enamel and oral mucosa surfaces, but the adherence of C. albicans

Clinical implications of a diagnosis of taurodontism: A literature review.

Taurodontism is a morphological anomaly involving multirooted teeth that is characterized by a vertical shift of the pulp chamber and shortening of the roots. The literature was analyzed to determine the impact of a diagnosis of taurodontism on dental treatment. A total of 85 full-text publications from the years 2005-2021 were analyzed and 20 publications were included in this research. The endodontic treatment of a taurodont tooth is challenging due to the apical displacement of the pulpal chamber floor and the incorrect configuration of the root canal system, or the presence of additional c

Genomic Medicine in Periodontal Disease: Old Issue, New Insights.

Genetic variability is the main cause of phenotypic variation. Some variants may be associated with several diseases and can be used as risk biomarkers, identifying animals with higher susceptibility to develop the pathology. Genomic medicine uses this genetic information for risk calculation, clinical diagnosis and prognosis, allowing the implementation of more effective preventive strategies and/or personalized therapies. Periodontal disease (PD) is the inflammation of the periodontium induced mainly by bacterial plaque and is the leading cause of tooth loss. Microbial factors are responsibl
