Submental abscess following anterior mandibular implantation: A case report and comprehensive literature review.

Dental implants are a predictable treatment for tooth loss; however, infections extending into deep fascial spaces are rare and potentially life-threatening. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of an implant-related submental abscess in a diabetic patient. A 33-year-old female with type 2 diabetes mellitus (HbA1c: 8.1%) presented with submental swelling five months after anterior mandibular implant placement. Clinical examination revealed erythema, tenderness, and purulent discharge around implant #41. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) sho…

Fracture patterns in endodontically treated teeth restored with or without horizontal fiber posts: An in vitro study.

CONTEXT: Endodontically treated maxillary premolars are more susceptible to fracture because of the loss of tooth structure following caries removal and endodontic procedures. Various composite restorative systems and reinforcement strategies, such as horizontal fiber posts (HFPs), have been proposed to improve fracture behavior and promote more favorable failure patterns. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate fracture patterns in endodontically treated maxillary premolars restored with different composite systems, with and without horizontal fiber posts (HFP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Si

Oral bacterium contributes to periodontal inflammation by forming advanced glycation end products.

The oral bacterium Tannerella forsythia is associated with periodontitis, an inflammatory disease affecting tooth-supporting tissues. The bacterium produces a dicarbonyl compound, methylglyoxal (MGO), whose levels correlate with the severity of periodontitis. MGO can induce inflammation directly or via the generation of glycation products called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). T. forsythia-produced MGO has been shown to cause tissue collagen glycation, which in turn can induce pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion in monocytes via receptor for advanced glycation end product (RAGE) recept

Dental plaque biofilm transforms host-derived β2-microglobulin into polymorphic fibrils for integration into the biofilm matrix.

Dental plaque is a polymicrobial biofilm formed on tooth surfaces despite continuous exposure to variable host-derived antimicrobial factors. To date, the underlying mechanisms remain nebulous. This study aimed to determine whether dental plaque biofilms affect the major salivary antimicrobial protein β2-microglobulin (B2M). Immunostaining of human dental plaque specimens with an anti-B2M antibody revealed that B2M exists as elongated fibers, punctate structures, and amorphous aggregates. Fractionation of dental plaque suspensions revealed that B2M was present in both the soluble and insoluble

Ferritin promotes monocyte osteoclastogenic differentiation to aggravate alveolar bone resorption in periodontitis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Alveolar bone resorption in periodontitis critically impairs masticatory function and tooth stability, yet the mechanistic drivers linking immune dysregulation to osteolytic pathology remain incompletely characterized. This study elucidates how ferritin-an inflammation responsive iron chaperone secreted by activated monocytes-orchestrates monocyte-to-osteoclast differentiation to exacerbate bone destruction in periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a multidisciplinary approach, we combined: Immunohistochemical profiling of cluster of differentiation 68-positive (CD68+

Variations in oral performance and processing behaviours among older adults: Associations with gastric emptying, postprandial glucose and insulin responses.

Older adults often experience deterioration in oral health and oral-related abilities, with tooth loss, impaired masticatory performance, alterations to salivary flow and composition all being common. Additionally, other ageing-related physiological changes happen, including delayed gastric emptying and higher postprandial glycemic responses. The interaction between oral-related factors and metabolic responses has been researched in younger adults, but not in older age groups. This study aimed to explore oral performance measures (OPMs) and oral processing behaviours (OPBs) and their associati…

Rare Variants Cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease in Malian Families.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), the most common inherited peripheral neuropathy, is clinically and genetically heterogeneous with over 100 genes identified to date. Recently, next-generation sequencing (NGS) has enabled molecular diagnosis in previously unidentified CMT cases. However, less progress has been achieved in sub-Saharan African (SSA) populations. We report rare CMT variants found in four unrelated Malian families. METHODS: Patients went through a thorough neurological examination and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) were performed. DNA was extracted for genetic

Zerumbone modulates the expression of inflammatory mediators and antioxidant enzymes in TNF-α-stimulated human periodontal ligament cells.

OBJECTIVES: Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by periodontopathogenic bacteria, and its progression leads to periodontal tissue destruction and tooth loss. Zerumbone is a bioactive substance found in ginger (Zingiber zerumbet) and is known to have bioactive effects such as anticancer effects, but there have been no attempts to use it for periodontitis treatment. In addition, there have been no reports examining its effects on periodontal tissue component cells. In this experiment, we aimed to determine whether zerumbone affects the production of inflammatory mediator…
