Role of the medial olivocochlear system among children with ADHD.

UNLABELLED: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients show, as one of the main symptoms, an attentional impairment. Selective attention in the hearing process is the ability to understand speech in a noisy environment, which can be evaluated by several methods. One of the main approaches is the functioning of the Medial Olivocochlear Efferent System, which can be accessed by Transient-Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (TOAE). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at evaluating the suppression effect of contralateral noise on TOAE in ADHD (study group) and normal subjects (control group). STU

Exploratory study of plasma GFAP and GAD65-Ab levels in children with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder in children of school age. In mice with ADHD, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) levels were significantly higher, whereas glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) levels were lower. The goal of this study is to look at the potential function of GFAP and GAD65 antibodies (GAD65-Ab) in mice and children with ADHD by assessing GFAP and GAD65-Ab levels in the blood. METHODS: An ADHD model was established in pregnant mice with 15 mg/kg of S-ketamine administration using intraperitoneal injectio

Cannabidiol as a suggested candidate for treatment of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities and often intellectual disabilities. ASD has a number of prevalent co-morbidities, such as sleep disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and epilepsy. No effective treatment for the core symptoms of ASD is currently available. There is increasing interest in cannabinoids, especially cannabidiol (CBD), as monotherapy or add-on treatment for the core symptoms and co-morbidities of ASD. In this review we summarize the

Shared and Distinct Alterations in Brain Structure of Youth With Internalizing or Externalizing Disorders: Findings From the ENIGMA Antisocial Behavior, ADHD, Major Depressive Disorder, and Anxiety Working Groups.

BACKGROUND: Externalizing and internalizing disorders are common in youth but are often studied separately, preventing researchers from identifying shared (i.e., transdiagnostic) alterations in brain structure. Using data from the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium, we conducted a mega-analysis to identify shared and distinct cortical and subcortical brain alterations across internalizing (anxiety disorders and depression) and externalizing (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] and conduct disorder [CD]) disorders in youth. METHODS: 3D T1-wei

A developmental approach to violence, hostile attributions, and paranoid thinking in adolescence.

Research within the area of paranoid thinking has focused primarily on adults and has only recently looked at the effects during the critical life stage of adolescence, with even less research in the context of the juvenile justice system. This article aims to explore the relationship between antisocial behaviour in adolescence and the development of paranoid thinking, set within wider contexts that surround the juvenile justice system. The information presented is drawn from both the current research and the clinical experiences of those working in adolescent forensic psychiatry services. The

MicroRNAs and Child Neuropsychiatric Disorders: A Brief Review.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, endogenous, noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression through posttranscriptional mechanisms via degradation or inhibition of specific mRNAs targets. In recent years, abundant studies have illustrated the relevance of miRNAs in human psychopathology. In this current review, neuropsychiatric disorders with moderate to high prevalence among children and adolescents such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Dyslexia, Epilepsy, Schizophrenia and Tourette Syndrome were discussed focusing on the functional consequence of altered miRN

Autism spectrum disorder in a child with megalencephaly-capillary malformation-polymicrogyria syndrome (MCAP).

Megalencephaly-capillary malformation-polymicrogyria syndrome (MCAP) is a rare disorder that arises as a result of a somatic mosaic mutation in the PIK3CA gene. It characteristically presents with postnatal or congenital megalencephaly, cutaneous capillary malformations, postaxial polydactyly and often segmental or focal body overgrowth. We report a 7-year-old boy with known MCAP who was diagnosed at around 10 months old with a mosaic change in the PIK3CA gene. He was found to have hall-mark clinical signs; macrocephaly and four-limb postaxial polydactyly. Since diagnosis, he has had multiple

ADHD, stimulant treatment in childhood and subsequent substance abuse in adulthood - a naturalistic long-term follow-up study.

The purpose of the study was to estimate the risk of substance use disorder (SUD) and alcohol abuse in adulthood among children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to the background population. Furthermore, to examine whether the age at initiation and duration of stimulant treatment in childhood predicts SUD and alcohol abuse in adulthood. 208 youths with ADHD (183 boys; 25 girls) were followed prospectively. Diagnoses of SUD and alcohol abuse were obtained from The Danish Psychiatric Central Register. The relative risk (RR) of SUD and alcohol abuse fo

Psychosis in children with velocardiofacial syndrome (22q11.2 deletion syndrome).

Velocardiofacial syndrome, now known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS), is estimated to affect more than 700 children born in the United States each year. Some clinical studies have found increased rates of schizophrenia in adults with 22qDS. However, these studies have been limited by small sample size and possible ascertainment bias. The psychiatric disorders most commonly reported in children and adolescents with 22qDS have been attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety disorders, and major depression. Psychotic symptoms have been observed in 14% to

Psychiatric comorbidity in children with high-functioning pervasive developmental disorder.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies for children with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), the prevalence for psychiatric comorbidities has varied because of their methodological differences. In this research, our PDD subjects were strictly limited by age and IQ scores, and we utilized a semi-structured interview to diagnose their coexisting disorders. The purpose of this study is to identify reliable prevalence and types of psychiatric comorbidities in children with high-functioning PDD (HFPDD). METHODS: The subjects were 49 children aged 6-15 years with HFPDD. In order to diagnose the comorb

Preschool children with disruptive behavior: three-year outcome as a function of adaptive disability.

A significant discrepancy between intelligence and daily adaptive functioning, or adaptive disability (AD), has been previously found to be a associated with significant psychological morbidity in preschool children with disruptive behavior (DB). The utility of AD as a predictor of later developmental risks was examined in a 3-year longitudinal study of normal (N = 43) and DB preschool children. The DB children were grouped into those with AD (DB+AD; N = 28) and those without AD (DB-only; N = 98). All children were followed with annual evaluations to the end of second grade. Both DB groups dem

A Retrospective Evaluation on Demographic, Phenomenological, and Comorbidity Features of Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

The impacts of sex, age of onset, phenotype, and comorbidity on clinical features were explored in a large clinical sample with pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (p-OCD) (n = 457), along with concomitant specific features in the framework of different symptom dimensions/phenotypes, by a retrospective cross-sectional evaluation design. The most prevalent phenotype was obsession/checking (almost half), and the clinical features belonging to different phenotypes varied among sexes, age of onset, severity, and comorbidities. The contamination and aggressive obsessions, along with the compuls
