[Correction of severe malnutrition by cyclic enteral feeding].

This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of cyclic (nocturnal) enteral nutrition in ambulatory malnourished patients. A ternary polymeric diet was administered to a total of 28 women and 23 men (mean age: 58 years) for a nocturnal period of 12-14 hours during 24.5 +/- 1.1 days. This diet provided an average of 28.3 +/- 0.6 kcal/kg ideal body weight/day. The nutritional program was administered as planned and well tolerated in 50 of the 51 patients. Voluntary oral caloric intake improved significantly during the treatment period (18.2 +/- 1.4 kcal/kg ideal body weight/day …

A dietary fibre supplement in the treatment of mild hypertension. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of a dietary fibre supplement given as monotherapy upon blood pressure in mildly hypertensive patients. DES … that dietary fibre supplementation could reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients. RESULTS: Body weight was significantly reduced in the fibre group. Dietary fibre significantly reduced DBP and fasting serum insulin. However, no correlation between changes in body weight and systolic blood pressure or DBP was found. CONCLUSION: A dietary fibre supple …

Sex difference in digit and palate formation of mouse embryos at midgestation.

We investigated whether there is a difference in timing between the sexes of mouse embryos with regard to digit and palatal formation at midgestation by using a simple method of sex chromatin analysis for rodent embryos. At day 14.4 of gestation, although the mean body weight of male embryos was greater than that of female embryos, digit and palatal formation of female embryos was found to be more advanced than in males when compared according to their body weight. This was contrary to our previous finding of digit formation at the earlier stage (day 12.0 of gestation): namely, that digit deve…

Volume-regulated arginine vasopressin release in conscious dogs. Evidence for dopaminergic or opioid modulation?

The possibility of a dopaminergic and/or opioid modulation of the volume-regulated release of AVP was investigated in conscious dogs. Either bromocriptine, 10 micrograms/kg body weight po, or naloxone, 0.1 mg/kg body weight iv, was administered prior to induction of nonhypotensive hypovolemia. Volume contraction of 15 ml/kg body weight was induced gradually, over a period of 30 min. Basal plasma AVP levels in the bromocriptine group were not significantly different from control group values. Bromocriptine administration significantly augmented AVP release following volume contraction. Mean art…

Nutritional chloride deficiency in early lactation Holstein cows.

Beginning 1 wk postpartum, weekly changes of feed and water intake, body weight, milk production, and electrolyte concentrations in serum, saliva, urine, milk, and feces were observed for 8 to 11 wk. Three dietary treatments differing in sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate supplementation but containing equal sodium concentrations were used. Dietary chloride percents were low .10%, medium .27%, and high .45%. Consistently changes were significant for feed and water intake, body weight, milk production, and electrolyte concentrations in serum, urine, milk, and feces of cows fed the low chlor…

The Role of Maternal Weight in the Hierarchy of Macrosomia Predictors; Overall Effect of Analysis of Three Prediction Indicators.

So far it has not been established which maternal features play the most important role in newborn macrosomia. The aim of this study is to provide assessment of a hierarchy of twenty six (26) maternal characteristics in macrosomia prediction. A Polish prospective cohort of women with singleton pregnancy (N = 912) which was recruited in the years 2015-2016 has been studied. Two analyses were performed: for probability of macrosomia >4000 g (n = 97) (vs. 755 newborns 2500-4000 g); and for birthweight >90th percentile (n = 99) (vs. 741 newborns 10-90th percentile). A multiple logistic regression

Exercise During the First Trimester and Infant Size at Birth: Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation of the Causal Risk Difference.

This cohort study sought to estimate the differences in risk of delivering infants who were small or large for gestational age (SGA or LGA, respectively) according to exercise during the first trimester of pregnancy (vs. no exercise) among 2,286 women receiving care at Kaiser Permanente Northern California in 2013-2017. Exercise was assessed by questionnaire. SGA and LGA were determined by the sex- and gestational-age-specific birthweight distributions of the 2017 US Natality file. Risk differences were estimated by targeted maximum likelihood estimation, with and without data-adaptive predict

Pregnancy in the underweight woman. Course, outcome, and growth patterns of the infant.

The obstetric performance and pregnancy outcome of 354 underweight patients were compared with matched control subjects of normal weight. The growth patterns of their infants were also compared. The underweight women had significantly higher rates of cardiac/respiratory problems, anemia, PROM, and endometritis but were less prone to develop pre-eclampsia. Prematurity and low Apgar scores were significantly more frequent in the infants of underweight women. There was no difference in the frequency of IUGR and in perinatal mortality rates. The mean birth weight of the infants of underweight wome

Status, sexual capital, and intraminority body stigma in a size-diverse sample of gay men.

Gay men are more likely than heterosexual men to experience social pressure based on body weight, shape, and muscularity, which may drive disparities in body image concerns and eating disorders. Utilizing a sample of 1723 gay men living in the United States, the present study examined whether sociodemographic factors (used as proxies for status and sexual capital) and frequency of attending gay-specific establishments or gatherings (community involvement) were associated with gay men's experiences of negative or discriminatory pressures based on body size and shape specifically from other gay …

The Sodium Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitor Ipragliflozin Promotes Preferential Loss of Fat Mass in Non-obese Diabetic Goto-Kakizaki Rats.

Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors improve hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by increasing urinary glucose excretion. In addition to their antihyperglycemic effect, SGLT2 inhibitors also reduce body weight and fat mass in obese and overweight patients with T2DM. However, whether or not SGLT2 inhibitors similarly affect body composition of non-obese patients with T2DM remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of the SGLT2 inhibitor ipragliflozin on body composition in a Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat model of non-obese T2DM. GK rats were trea…

Muscle Dysfunction and Bone Loss in a Woman With Cystic Fibrosis and Obesity Treated With Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Agonist: A Case Report.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) modulator therapies can lead to rapid and excessive weight gain. Obesity in CF can lead to undesirable metabolic compli … ed hyperglycaemia. This prompted initiation of Semaglutide, which over 12 months led to 14.8% total body weight loss and significant glycaemic improvement. However, serial assessments revealed declines in absolute muscle mass, muscle strength and bone mineral density despite prescription of tailored exercise and nutritional interventions. Our findings highlig …

Identification of a thermogenic target in the dorsal raphe nucleus for weight management in mice.

Obesity emerges from a complex interplay of factors, including imbalanced interoception, genetic predisposition, and environmental cues, which ultimately disrupt body weight homeostasis1. While much research has concentrated on strategies to suppress appetite for sustained weight loss, insufficient attention has been given to counterregulatory mechanisms that promote energy expenditure. Here, we show that chronic inhibition of GABAergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus and ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (DRN/vlPAGVGAT) reduces body weight in diet-induced obese (DIO) male mice. In this st…

Central Modulation of Energy Homeostasis and Cognitive Performance After Bariatric Surgery.

In moderately or morbidly obese patients, bariatric surgery has been proven to be an effective therapeutic approach to control body weight and comorbidities. Surgery-mediated modulation of brain function via modified postoperative secretion of gut peptides and vagal nerve stimulation was identified as an underlying mechanism in weight loss and improvement of weight-related diseases. Increased basal and postprandial plasma levels of gastrointestinal hormones like glucagon-like peptide 1 and peptide YY that act on specific areas of the hypothalamus to reduce food intake, either directly or media…

Should obesity be a limiting factor for clozapine treatment?

OBJECTIVE: Clozapine is the first choice in drug-resistant schizophrenia but also causes important weight changes. This might discourage clinicians concerned about the risk of developing health problems. To assess this issue we measured change in body mass index (cBMI) induced by clozapine at 18 and 56 weeks. METHODS: Baseline body weight and height were measured and weight weekly thereafter during the first 18 weeks of treatment. After that, measurements were made monthly. Steady clozapine dose, clozapine and norclozapine blood concentrations, concomitant medication, gender and age were reco…

The asparaginyl hydroxylase factor inhibiting HIF-1alpha is an essential regulator of metabolism.

Factor inhibiting HIF-1alpha (FIH) is an asparaginyl hydroxylase. Hydroxylation of HIF-alpha proteins by FIH blocks association of HIFs with the transcriptional coactivators CBP/p300, thus inhibiting transcriptional activation. We have created mice with a null mutation in the FIH gene and found that it has little or no discernable role in mice in altering classical aspects of HIF function, e.g., angiogenesis, erythropoiesis, or development. Rather, it is an essential regulator of metabolism: mice lacking FIH exhibit reduced body weight, elevated metabolic rate, hyperventilation, and improved g…
