Childhood trauma in obese and overweight women with food addiction and clinical-level of binge eating.

Childhood trauma (CT) is considered a major risk factor for several disorders as well as for the development of eating psychopathology and adult obesity. The main aims of the present study were to assess in overweight and obese women: (i) the independent association between CT and food addiction (FA), and (ii) CT in patients with both FA and clinical-level of binge eating (BE), versus patients who only engage in FA or BE. Participants were 301 overweight and obese women seeking low-energy-diet therapy. All of the patients were administered self-report measures investigating FA, BE, CT, anxiety

Communication between physicians and patients with suspected or diagnosed binge eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Physician-patient conversations were examined to identify barriers to effective discussions about binge eating disorder (BED) arising from discrepancies in how physicians and patients communicate about BED. METHODS: Conversations between suspected or diagnosed BED patients (n = 38) and psychiatrists (n = 11) were recorded and the transcripts were reviewed for BED-related lexical terms using automated conversation analysis software. Researchers disambiguated multivalent terms and combined similar terms. RESULTS: The results showed that psychiatrists evaluated some diagnostic crite

Personal, behavioral and socio-environmental predictors of overweight incidence in young adults: 10-yr longitudinal findings.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to identify 10-year longitudinal predictors of overweight incidence during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. METHODS: Data were from Project EAT (Eating and Activity in Teens and Young Adults). A diverse, population-based cohort (N = 2,134) completed baseline surveys in 1998-1999 (mean age = 15.0±1.6, 'adolescence') and follow-up surveys in 2008-2009 (mean age = 25.4±1.7, 'young adulthood'). Surveys assessed personal, behavioral and socio-environmental factors hypothesized to be of relevance to obesity, in addition to height and we

Shifting paradigms: continuous nasogastric feeding with high caloric intakes in anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: The initial goal of admission for a patient with anorexia nervosa is physiologic stabilization through nutritional rehabilitation balanced against the risk of refeeding syndrome. Recent alternative approaches emphasize meal composition, limiting carbohydrates, to reduce risk. The Montreal Children's Hospital has instituted a standardized high-calorie continuous nasogastric (NG) refeeding protocol for the initial management of inpatient adolescents with restrictive eating disorders. This study aims to confirm that this protocol results in a shorter admission duration and faster rate of

Parent report of binge eating in Hispanic, African American and Caucasian youth.

Binge eating is prevalent among weight loss treatment-seeking youth. However, there are limited data on the relationship between binge eating and weight in racial or ethnically diverse youth. We therefore examined 409 obese (BMI≥95th percentile for age and sex) treatment-seeking Hispanic (29.1%), Caucasian (31.7%), and African American (39.2%), boys and girls (6-18 years). Weight, height, waist circumference, and body fat were measured to assess body composition. Depressive symptoms were measured with the Children's Depression Inventory and disordered eating cognitions were measured with the C

Co-occurrence of avoidant personality disorder and child sexual abuse predicts poor outcome in long-standing eating disorder.

Few consistent predictive factors for eating disorder have been identified across studies. In the current 5-year prospective study, the objective was to examine whether (a) personality disorder and child sexual abuse predict the course of severity of eating disorder symptoms after inpatient treatment and (b) how the predictors interact. A total of 74 patients with long-standing eating disorder and mean age of 30 years were assessed at the beginning and end of inpatient therapy and at 1-, 2-, and 5-year follow-up. A mixed model was used to examine the predictors. Avoidant personality disorder a

Health care utilization in patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine health care costs among patients with eating disorders (EDs) using the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota claims database system. METHOD: Four groups of individuals enrolled between 1999 and 2005 were identified: (1) a group diagnosed with EDs at the beginning of the study period, in 2000 or 2001; (2) a group diagnosed with EDs later in the study period, in 2004 or 2005; (3) a comparison group with depression; and (4) a non-eating disordered comparison group. RESULTS: Health care costs were high for patients diagnosed with an ED during the period when the diagnosis

Compulsive overeating as an addiction disorder. A review of theory and evidence.

In this paper we argue that compulsive overeating has compelling similarities to conventional drug addiction. Our case is based on their comparable clinical features, the biological mechanisms they have in common, and on evidence that the two disorders have a shared diathesis. In making the argument for overeating as an addictive behaviour, it is clearly not appropriate to include all cases of excessive food consumption in this taxon. Nor are we claiming that obesity and addiction are one and the same. However, it is proposed that Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a phenotype particularly well-su

Validation and predictive utility of the Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire for Eating Disorders (SATAQ-ED): internalization of sociocultural ideals predicts weight gain.

A widely used measure of societal influences on body image and eating disturbances--the Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ) was validated in women with eating disorders. The original SATAQ and measures of convergence and divergence were administered to 165 eating disordered inpatients. Factor analyses were conducted to determine the underlying structure of the SATAQ. Convergent validity, diagnostic category norms and the predictive utility of the revised SATAQ were examined. Factor analyses indicated three factors: Internalization, Awareness, and Success. Internaliz

Associations among family-of-origin food-related experiences, expectancies, and disordered eating.

OBJECTIVE: The study reported here integrates research on family-of-origin learning experiences and adult eating/thinness expectancies in the study of risk for eating disordered behavior. METHOD: A sample of women manifesting a wide range of eating disordered behaviors (n = 66) were compared in their retrospective reports of family learning, current eating and dieting expectancies, and current eating disordered behaviors. RESULTS: History of food-related teasing from friends and family, negative maternal modeling, and friends' criticism of eating all related to both adult disordered behavior

Eating disorders symptoms in pregnancy: a longitudinal study of women with recent and past eating disorders and obesity.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of pregnancy on eating disorders (ED) symptoms using data from a large prospective, community-based cohort study. METHODS: Women (12,254) were classified according to whether they had a recent or past history of ED, were obese before pregnancy, or constituted part of the general population control group. We evaluated self-induced vomiting (SIV), laxative use, exercise behavior, and appraisals about weight gain during pregnancy, as well as dieting, and shape and weight concern before and during pregnancy. RESULTS: Women with a recent episode of ED dieted, us

Patterns of menstrual disturbance in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To describe menstrual disturbance in eating disorders (ED). METHOD: We describe menstrual history in 1,705 women and compare eating, weight, and psychopathological traits across menstrual groups. RESULTS: Menstrual dysfunction occurred across all eating disorder subtypes. Individuals with normal menstrual history and primary amenorrhea reported the highest and lowest lifetime body mass index (BMI), respectively. Normal menstruation and oligomenorrhea groups reported greater binge eating, vomiting, and appetite suppressant use. Amenorrhea was associated with lower caloric intake an

Personality disorder traits evident by early adulthood and risk for eating and weight problems during middle adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The current article investigates the association of personality disorder (PD) with the subsequent development of eating and weight problems. METHOD: Psychiatric interviews were administered to a community-based sample of 658 individuals at mean ages 14, 16, 22, and 33 years. RESULTS: Individuals with PD by age 22 were at an elevated risk for eating disorders at mean age 33 years. PDs were associated with risk for onset of binge eating, purging, daily dietary restriction, and obesity among individuals without a history of these problems. Borderline and histrionic PD symptoms were a

Negative self-image and outcome in eating disorders: results at 3-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Negative self-image has been hypothesised to be of aetiological significance in eating disorders; however, its relationship to outcome remains unclear. The present study examined the relationship between self-image and follow-up status in a heterogeneous sample of eating disorder patients (N=246). METHODS: Patients were assessed at intake and after 36 months. Self-image was measured using SASB, and a general outcome measure was calculated comprising eating disorder symptoms, occupational status, interpersonal relationships and general psychopathology. RESULTS: SASB self-hate wa
