Use of clozapine is attended with the serious though rare risk of agranulocytosis. Clozapineinduced agranulocytosis is reversible with the use of cytokines like granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). Reports of the haematological complication of clozapine have not been forthcoming from India though it has been in use for nearly three years. This report is on an young patient who developed total absence of granulocytes during the 4th month of treatment who was successfully treated with G-CSF.

An outgrowth on the left anteriothoracic region behind the elbow joint was seen in a free living Zebra at the time of postmortem examination. The covering skin was ulcerated, nodular, hard with multiple fistula containing yellowish pus. A pure culture of coagulase positive Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the deep tissue. Histopathology revealed pyogranulomatous dermatitis characterized by eosinophilic amorphous grains including bacterial colonies. This is the first report of cutaneous staphylococcal granuloma in Zebra in Zambia.

The cytoxicity and the 50% lethal concentration (LC50) has been assessed in vitro by the colony forming method in extracts of 5 precious or semiprecious alloys and of oxides and chlorides of the metal contained in these alloys: Pd, Ag, Cu, Zn, Sn, In and Ga. All alloy extracts in culture medium induced cell death depending on their composition. In, Ga and Sn compounds showed the most favorable cell viability, Cu and Ag salts induced the lowest survival rate.

In a honeybee colony, brood stimulates development of hypopharyngeal glands of nurse bees. A chemical signal, a blend of 10 fatty acid esters, has been identified on larval cuticle. We demonstrate that the blend of 10 esters, ethyl oleate, and methyl palmitate stimulates the protein synthesis of hypopharyngeal glands of nurses. Thus, in Apis mellifera the chemical signal from the brood acts as a primer pheromone in addition to its previously shown role as a releaser pheromone.

A 41-year-old woman with follicular lymphoma developed sporadic respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pneumonia shortly after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation from an HLA-matched sibling. RSV pneumonia is potentially fatal in immunosuppressed patients, but she improved along with the recovery of bone marrow function without specific treatment. Early recovery of myelosuppression supported by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor may have helped to control RSV pneumonia.

By use of limiting dilution assay, it is confirmed that most of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, such as chronic myelogenous leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome, had defect in the stage of pluripotent hemopoietic stem cell. With light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, colonies which originated from leukemic progenitor cells (L-CFU) were ascertained. The incorporated rates of 3H-TdR and 55 + 59Fe showed that proliferative manner of LCFU was apparently different from that of normal adults.

We report a case of septicemia due to Streptococcus gwangjuensis in an immunocompromised 8-year-old child. The final diagnosis was febrile neutropenia associated with acute myeloid leukemia and septicemia. The patient was successfully treated with chemotherapy, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, leukodepleted packed red cell transfusions, piperacillin/tazobactam, and meropenem. S. gwangjuensis was identified using sodA and gyrB amplicon-based next-generation sequencing. The isolate was susceptible to all β-lactam antibiotics.

A free-ranging subadult, male green turtle (Chelonia mydas) presented with radiographic evidence of pneumonia and died acutely. On necropsy, the trachea and bronchi were plugged by diphtheritic membranes, comprised of fibrin, necrotic debris, and colonies of bacilli, identified as Serratia proteamaculans. S. proteamaculans, typically considered an opportunistic plant pathogen, has rarely been described as causing disease in animals. This is the first report of S. proteamaculans causing severe necrotizing tracheitis and bronchopneumonia in a reptile.

Fungal peritonitis is frequent on peritoneal dialysis, with rare cases by Exophiala dermatitidis. A 25-month-old female admitted to the pediatric ICU with acute renal failure was submitted to peritoneal dialysis. After 10 days patient presented fever. Peritoneal fluid culture showed yeast colonies molecularly identified as E. dermatitidis. Patient was treated with voriconazole and hemodialysis. The literature was reviewed. Disseminated infections are frequently fatal, but appropriate diagnose and therapeutic led to cure in this case.

We measured fungicidal activity of continuous infusion of amphotericin B deoxycholate plus 5'flucytosine using quantitative cultures of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from lumbar punctures of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with neurocryptococcosis during 14 days of treatment. Glomerular renal function was preserved in all patients. Mycological efficacy with progressive reduction in CSF cryptococcal colony-forming units was comparable to standard 4-h infusion of amphotericin B.
