Effects of repeated 2-deoxy-D-glucose administration on ingestive, psychological, and 5-HT-related behaviours in the rat.

The effects of repeated treatment with the metabolic stressor 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG: 500 mg/kg/day, 7 days) upon some ingestive and psychological behaviours were investigated, and compared with those elicited by repeated immobilization or cold exposure (2 hr/day, 7 days). Because all these stressors affect central serotonergic systems, 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptor-mediated behaviours were also analysed. Both 2-DG administration and immobilization decreased daily food intakes and increased the weight of the adrenals, while all stressors reduced body weight gain. In addition, 2-DG triggered hype

Factors Associated with Complementary Feeding Practices in Infants of Mothers with a History of High-Risk Pregnancy.

Background: Evidence on complementary feeding (CF) practices among offspring of women with a history of high-risk pregnancy remains limited, despite their increased vulnerability to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. This study evaluated the associations between CF timing, first complementary foods, primary sources of information, and maternal, perinatal, and sociodemographic factors. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted involving 530 mother-child dyads with a history of high-risk pregnancy. Data regarding CF practices, maternal characteristics, neonatal outcomes, and sociode

Early Life Added Sugars and Associated Appetite, Satiety, Growth and Adiposity in the First 2 Years of Life.

Introduction: Added sugar (AS) intake has been linked to chronic diseases, yet evidence in children under 2 years remains limited. Aim: Characterise AS intake in children ≤ 2 years with associated appetite, satiety, growth, adiposity, and breastfeeding duration. Methods: We analysed data from 248 mother-child pairs from the MAS-Lactancia birth cohort. Intake of AS and energy was estimated using data from 24 h dietary recalls. AS intake was classified in tertiles as low (0 g), medium (0.01-6.96 g), and high (>6.96 g). Major food group contributors to AS intake were identified. Appetite and sati

Early-life dietary patterns and the risk of juvenile-onset ankylosing spondylitis: a nationwide cohort study in South Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence suggests that early-life exposures may influence the development of inflammatory joint diseases. This study investigated the association between early-life exposures and the incidence of juvenile-onset ankylosing spondylitis (JAS) in a nationwide South Korean cohort. METHODS: This study included 1 242 257 infants from the South Korean National Health Insurance Service. The association between early-life exposures-such as food diversity, frequency of solid food intake, antibiotic use, and breastfeeding status-and the development of JAS, was examined. Food diversit

Preoperative Eating Patterns and Their Effect on Post-operative Outcomes in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: A Cohort Study of 1550 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative outcomes after metabolic and bariatric (MBS) can vary due to preoperative behaviors and psychological factors, with several eating patterns (EPs), including eating disorders (EDs), often associated with suboptimal weight loss. Some guidelines even consider EDs a contraindication for MBS. This study examined the impact of EPs on long-term outcomes after MBS. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on prospectively collected data from 1550 patients who underwent primary Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) between 2010 and 2018. Patients w

Lifetime history of depression and eating behaviours: a co-twin control study of the TwinsUK registry.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which depression impacts eating behaviours, and the mechanisms underpinning their relationship are unclear. We aim to investigate the relationship between depression diagnosis and eating behaviours. METHODS: We analysed data from 1426 participants of the twins UK registry, which includes 722 monozygotic (MZ) and 702 dizygotic (DZ) twins. Eating behaviours were measured using the three-factor eating questionnaire while depression and antidepressant usage were self-reported. Co-twin control design was used to model the association between depression and eating. Sensiti

An Assessment of Dietary Intake, Feeding Practices, Growth, and Swallowing Function in Young Children with Late-Onset Pompe Disease: A Framework for Developing Nutrition Guidelines.

Newborn screening (NBS) is leading to the diagnosis of a large number of children with late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD), yet many remain asymptomatic until later years. A high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet is recommended for adults with LOPD. Nutrition guidelines are not available for young children. Methods: 37 children with LOPD aged 1-6 years participated. Early diet history, feeding practices, and 24 h dietary intake were collected via questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements, blood creatine kinase (CK), blood urea nitrogen (BUN)/creatinine ratio, and urine glucose tetrasaccharide (Glc4)

Effect of grinding method and extent of pelleting of broiler diets on performance, feeding behaviour and digestive tract functionality.

1. An experiment was carried out to examine if a heterogeneous diet consisting of pellets and coarse cereal particles would result in a similar feed intake to pelleted-only diets. It also considered whether coarser particles entering the gizzard would encourage the development of the gizzard and thus improve digestive tract functionality. Maize and wheat were hammer milled through a 3 mm screen after coarse grinding using either one of the two screens with a novel pattern. Three pellet-only diets were produced based on three grinding sizes. Additionally, four diets were produced by separating

The associations between calorie tracking, body image dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and menstrual cycle characteristics in resistance-trained athletes.

BACKGROUND: While body image dissatisfaction (BID) and eating disorders (EDs) are relatively common in athletes (ranging from 11% to 67% of athletes, depending on the sport) [1], they are also prevalent in weight-class restricted sports (a common format in strength sports), and among physique athletes [2]. These athletes manipulate their nutrition to reach aesthetic or body weight standards and, in that process, may undergo prolonged periods of low energy availability. Low energy availability, defined as consuming insufficient energy for one's lean mass and exercise activity, can lead to Relat

The Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised (DEPS-R) in a Greek Adult Population with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Model Comparison Supporting a Single Factor Structure.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients occasionally develop disordered eating behaviors, leading to insulin manipulation without medical consultation, targeting to achieve weight control. In clinical practice, the Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised Version (DEPS-R) questionnaire has been used to evaluate eating disorders in T1DM patients. This study was conducted to validate the factor structure of the Greek version of DEPS-R using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), to investigate its reliability and convergent validity in Greek T1DM adults and to compare a single factor DEPS-R model wi

Extruded urea could reduce true protein source in beef cattle diets.

Rumen micro-organisms are capable of producing microbial protein from ammonia and carbon skeleton, and non-protein nitrogen (NPN) may be one of the sources of ammonia. Alternative source of NPN is the slow release of ammonia sources in which the product is the extrusion of starch with urea. This work aimed to determine the effects on nutrient intake, ingestive behaviour, digestibility, nitrogen balance, ruminal pH, rumen ammonia nitrogen, volatile fatty acids (VFA) and blood parameters with increased levels of extruded urea (50, 60, 70 and 80 g/100 kg of body weight [BW]) in beef cattle diet.

Feeding Patterns of Infants and Toddlers: The Mexico Case Study.

Understanding the feeding patterns of Mexican infants and toddlers has required large efforts due to the lack of recent reliable data. The double burden of obesity and micronutrient undernutrition is a public health problem in Mexico. This chapter reviews a series of papers reporting the FITS (Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study) Mexico effort. Secondary data analyses from a nationally representative sample of over 5,000 children from the Mexican National Nutrition and Health Study 2012 ENSANUT (Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición) were used to review the feeding and drinking patterns of Mex

Is Cybervictimization Associated with Body Dissatisfaction, Depression, and Eating Disorder Psychopathology?

Studies carried out in nonclinical samples have found an association between cyberbullying victimization and eating disorder (ED) psychopathology (negative emotions, low self-esteem, unhealthy eating behaviors, and body dissatisfaction); however, these previous studies were carried out with participants without an ED diagnosis. To extend the knowledge in this area of research, we aim to confirm these associations in two different samples: on the one hand, a sample composed of participants with ED diagnoses and, on the other hand, a sample composed of participants at high risk of ED. In study 1
