A Somali female baby with right upper limb triplication, polythelia, left sided hemihypertrophy, congenital hip dislocation, facial dysmorphism, congenital heart disease, and scoliosis is described. Clara cell protein (CC16) is a 16-kD protein secreted at the surface of respiratory airways by nonciliated bronchial and bronchiolar cells, including Clara cells. Somatic and visceral growth profiles of midgestation human fetuses with trisomy 21, 18, or 13 demonstrate that each disorder has a characteristic pattern of growth aberration. Stereological studies were performed on 20 pairs of adrenal glands of human foetuses. The volume of particular adrenocortical zones, average cell volume and number of parenchymal cells were calculated. In 50 to 320 mm crown-rump length (C.-R.L.) foetuses (9-38 weeks of the intra-uterine life) an exponential increase in adrenal gland weight was found. The specification of the body axis in the embryo is reflected in the structure of the vertebral column. Expression patterns of Hox genes in the prevertebrae suggest their involvement in this specification process and in the maintenance of vertebral identities. A single, ectopically expressed Hox gene can reprogramme the rostral part of the vertebral column and induce phenotypic alterations interpretable as homeotic transformations.

A battery of protocols for the assessment of maternally mediated toxicity during early pregnancy in the rat is being evaluated for its utility in detecting and defining mechanisms of early pregnancy failure. In this report, clomiphene citrate (CC), an estrogen agonist/antagonist, was used as a model compound in this evaluation process. The protocols involve dosing rats with CC during, and evaluation of multiple endpoints following, (a) the first 8 days of pregnancy; (b) early pseudopregnancy, accompanied by decidual induction; and (c) the pre- and postimplantation intervals of early pregnancy.
