Articular Fragment Escape and Carpal Subluxation Following Distal Radius Fracture Fixation.

Surgical fixation of distal radius fractures is among the more common procedures performed by hand surgeons. The approach to surgical management is based on a variety of factors including injury mechanism, fracture pattern, patient characteristics, bone quality, soft tissue injury, and surgeon preference. For the majority of fracture types, volar locking plate fixation has become the most commonly used method of fracture fixation. Although uncommon, complications can arise following this form of treatment, one of which is escape of an articular fragment with resultant carpal instability. More

Analysis of twenty-five cases of terrible triad injury of the elbow surgically treated with a single lateral approach.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to analyze the long-term clinical outcome of terrible triad injury of the elbow following surgical intervention with a single lateral approach. METHOD: We treated twenty-five patients with terrible triad injury of the elbow from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2020, and performed post hoc analysis. All patients underwent standardized surgery which entailed: plate fixation for the ulnar coronoid process, fixation or replacement of the radial head, and repair of the lateral ligament but not the medial collateral ligament. RESULTS: We followed up each patient for an aver

Trauma to the elbow and forearm.

Elbow and forearm trauma constitute a significant percentage of upper extremity injuries. A thorough understanding of the anatomy and mechanism of injury is necessary for obtaining the most accurate radiographic interpretation in both the pediatric and adult populations. Proper radiographic positioning and choice of the best imaging modality are crucial to ensure the best orthopedic treatment and reduce the incidence of post-treatment complications.

Factors associated with the choice of treatment for coronoid fractures.

AIMS: This study aimed to gather insights from elbow experts using the Delphi method to evaluate the influence of patient characteristics and fracture morphology on the choice between operative and nonoperative treatment for coronoid fractures. METHODS: A three-round electronic (e-)modified Delphi survey study was performed between March and December 2023. A total of 55 elbow surgeons from Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America participated, with 48 completing all questionnaires (87%). The panellists evaluated the factors identified as important in literature for treatment decision-making

Treatment and clinical outcome in patients with femoral head fractures: a long-term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: A femoral head fracture (Pipkin fracture) is a rare but severe injury. The optimal treatment is controversial, and there is a lack of research focusing on treatment strategies. The study aimed to analyze the treatment strategies in comparison to the outcome in patients after traumatic hip joint dislocation (THD) with concomitant femoral head fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective multicenter study at three Level I Trauma Centers was performed over a 12 year period from January 2009 to January 2021. Epidemiological data, associated injuries, and treatment were recorded

Elevated Temperature Tensile Creep Behavior of Aluminum Borate Whisker-Reinforced Aluminum Alloy Composites (ABOw/Al-12Si).

In order to evaluate the elevated temperature creep performance of the ABOw/Al-12Si composite as a prospective piston crown material, the tensile creep behaviors and creep fracture mechanisms have been investigated in the temperatures range from 250 to 400 °C and the stress range from 50 to 230 MPa using a uniaxial tensile creep test. The creep experimental data can be explained by the creep constitutive equation with stress exponents of 4.03-6.02 and an apparent activation energy of 148.75 kJ/mol. The creep resistance of the ABOw/Al-12Si composite is immensely improved by three orders of magn

Prosthetic replacement in femoral neck fracture in the elderly: results and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Intracapsular fractures of the proximal femur account for a major share of fractures in the elderly. The primary goal of treatment is to return the patient to his or her pre-fracture functional status. There are multiple internal fixation options (screws, dynamic hip screw plate or blade plates) and hemi and total hip arthroplasty. Open reduction and internal fixation has been shown to have a high rate of revision surgery due to nonunion and avascular necrosis. Hip replacement arthroplasty (hemi or total) is a viable treatment option. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-four elderly pat

[Surgical treatment of fractures of the clavicle--Indication, surgical technique and results].

UNLABELLED: 46 cases of clavicular fracture (25 of the middle third and 21 of the distal third) are reviewed concerning indications for surgery, surgical technique and postoperative results. In 32 cases surgery was necessary due to dislocation (in 7 cases with a rupture of the coracoclavicular ligaments), 3 times due to a complex trauma of the shoulder joint, 3 times due to a local neurovascular involvement, 3 times due to a delayed fracture healing and 3 times due to a pathological fracture. In two cases an open fracture required osteosynthesis. The most frequent surgical procedure was plate
