Community engagement around scrub typhus in northern Thailand: a pilot project.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is highly endemic in northern Thailand yet awareness and knowledge are low. We developed a community engagement project to improve awareness in communities at risk of contracting scrub typhus. METHODS: We conducted a series of engagement sessions with healthcare workers and community health volunteers so they would, in turn, engage with their communities. We evaluated our activities by assessing the increase in scrub typhus knowledge, using a series of Likert-scale items and open-ended questions. Three to 6 months after the sessions, participants were followed up to c

Racial disparities in fifth-grade sun protection: Evidence from the Healthy Passages study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite rising skin cancer rates in children, multiple studies reveal inadequate youth sun-protective behavior (eg, sunscreen use). Using Healthy Passages data for fifth-graders, we set out to determine sunscreen adherence in these children and investigated factors related to sunscreen performance. METHODS: Survey data were collected from 5119 fifth-graders and their primary caregivers. Logistic regression was used to assess associations between sunscreen adherence and performance of other preventive health behaviors (eg, flossing, helmet use) and examine predictors of

Doing battle with "the monster:" how high-risk heterosexuals experience and successfully manage HIV stigma as a barrier to HIV testing.

BACKGROUND: Annual HIV testing is recommended for populations at-risk for HIV in the United States, including heterosexuals geographically connected to urban high-risk areas (HRA) with elevated rates of HIV prevalence and poverty, who are primarily African American/Black or Hispanic. Yet this subpopulation of "individuals residing in HRA" (IR-HRA) evidence low rates of regular HIV testing. HIV stigma is a recognized primary barrier to testing, in part due to its interaction with other stigmatized social identities. Guided by social-cognitive and intersectionality theories, this qualitative des

Health services to groups with special needs in the Arab world: a review.

This paper examines the health services provided to the older population (especially those with physical limitations) and the people with mental illnesses in Arab countries and their evolution over the past 3 decades. The paper reviews utilization issues related to morbidity, transportation, patient-provider relationship, cost, stigma and organizational barriers that often impede access and compliance with the care provided or recommended. Health systems in the region need to acknowledge the specific needs of these patients in their national programmes. Raising awareness is an important step i

U.S. women's one-year contraceptive use patterns, 2004.

CONTEXT: Unintended pregnancies occur far too often in the United States, and half occur when couples fail to practice contraception. Improved measures of the continuity of women's contraceptive use, nonuse and switching patterns can help identify ways to reduce unintended pregnancy. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 1,978 adult women at risk of unintended pregnancy was surveyed by telephone in 2004. Respondents provided detailed information about contraceptive use and periods of stopping or switching methods during the past year. A typology of patterns of contraceptive use was c

Evaluating CAM education in health professions programs.

As medical, nursing, and allied health programs integrate complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) content into existing curricula, they face many of the same challenges to assessment and evaluation as do more traditional aspects of health professions education, namely, (1) specifying measurable objectives, (2) identifying valid indicators, and (3) evaluating the attainment of desired outcomes. Based on the experiences of 14 National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) education grant recipients funded between 2000 and 2003, the authors cite selected examples to illus

Increasing the availability of long-acting reversible contraception and medical abortion in primary care: the Australian Contraception and Abortion Primary Care Practitioner Support Network (AusCAPPS) cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Although primary care practitioners are the main providers of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and early medical abortion (EMA) in Australia, few provide these services. A professional community of practice (CoP) has the potential to improve LARC and EMA provision through evidence-based guidance, expert support and peer-to-peer engagement. The primary objective is to establish, implement and evaluate an innovative, multidisciplinary online CoP (AusCAPPS Network) to increase LARC and EMA services in Australian primary care. Secondary objectives are to (1) increase the nu

Financial Determinants and Beliefs About Gambling Control: A Cross-National Structural Model of Problem Gambling Severity.

Gambling-related harm is increasingly recognized as a public health concern, yet the role of financial factors in problem gambling remains insufficiently understood. This study examined the associations of financial knowledge, risk-oriented financial behaviour, prudent financial attitudes, and financial anxiety with problem gambling severity. A focused Health Belief Model-informed framework was used to investigate whether perceived benefits of reducing gambling, perceived barriers to gambling reduction, and gambling-related self-efficacy statistically accounted for indirect associations betwee

Vaccination gaps in decentralized emergency response: understanding immunization barriers among volunteer firefighters. A cross-sectional mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Volunteer firefighters are crucial for decentralized emergency response systems but operate outside standardized occupational health frameworks. Despite elevated exposure to biological hazards, systematic data on vaccination knowledge, immunization status, and preventive health engagement in this population are limited. To better understand the determinants of their preventive health engagement, and to inform strategies that strengthen operational readiness and public health resilience, this study examined vaccination behavior among German volunteer firefighters and identified de
