Reversal of chronic to resolved infection by IL-10 blockade is LCMV strain dependent.

Chronic viral infections lead to CD8(+) T-cell exhaustion, characterized by impaired cytokine secretion. The immune-regulatory cytokine IL-10 promotes chronicity of infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) Clone 13, as absence of IL-10 or blocking of IL-10R during early LCMV Clone 13 infection results in viral clearance. Thus, treatment of humans suffering from chronic viral infections with IL-10 neutralizing or IL-10R blocking antibodies was proposed to boost virus-specific T-cell responses to enhance control or even clear the viral infection. Here we demonstrate that although

Development of a pigtail macaque model of sexually transmitted infection/HIV coinfection using Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, and SHIV(SF162P3).

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are associated with an increased risk of HIV infection. To model the interaction between STIs and HIV infection, we evaluated the capacity of the pigtail macaque model to sustain triple infection with Trichomonas vaginalis, Chlamydia trachomatis, and SHIV(SF162P3). METHODS: Seven SHIV(SF162P3) -infected pigtail macaques were inoculated with T. vaginalis only (n = 2), C. trachomatis only (n = 1), both T. vaginalis and C. trachomatis (n = 2), or control media (no STI; n = 2). Infections were confirmed by culture and/or nucleic acid testing. Gen

The LFA-1 adhesion molecule is required for protective immunity during pulmonary Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Host immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis is mediated by T cells that recognize and activate infected macrophages to control intracellular bacterial replication. The early appearance of T cells in the lungs of infected mice correlates with greater resistance to infection. However, it is unknown whether the trafficking of T cells to the lung following infection is dependent upon the expression of certain adhesion molecules. To address this question, we infected knockout (KO) mice that have defective expression of CD11a, CD11b, CD18, CD62, CD103, or beta7. We found that the integrins CD11a and

Regression rate of clinical HPV infection of the lower genital tract during pregnancy after laser CO2 surgery.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of laser CO2 surgery during pregnancy to prevent clinical HPV infection recurrence after delivery and vertical infection. A case-control study was performed on 280 pregnant women affected by clinical HPV infection treated during pregnancy with 256 women treated three months after delivery. Follow-up was performed for a minimum of three colposcopic examinations for two years. Recurrence rates were calculated considering the number of positive findings for at least one colposcopic examination confirmed by biopsy after a negative control in a

Efficacy of albendazole against early and late stage of Trichinella spiralis infection in mice.

Efficacy of albendazole against early and late stage of Trichinella spiralis infection in mice was determined. To determine the efficacy of albendazole against the early stage (enteral phase) of trichinosis, mice experimentally infected with T. spiralis were treated with albendazole 20 mg/kg at 7 days post infection for 15 days. Larvae were recovered from the infected mice 7 days after the treatment. The reduction rate of the larvae was 100 per cent. Efficacy of albendazole against the late stage (parenteral phase) of infection was determined at 30 days post infection. Mice were treated with a

Estimating prevalence of community morbidity due to intestinal helminths: prevalence of infection as an indicator of the prevalence of disease.

The rational design of helminth control programmes for endemic areas requires that the limited resources be focused on the communities in greatest need. The process of locality-targetting would be facilitated by a simple, inexpensive method of assessing morbidity at the community level. This paper describes how a simple model of the distribution of infection in human populations can use infection prevalence data to predict the proportion of heavy, and potentially clinically significant, infections in a community. Analysis of observed data for Ascaris lumbricoides indicates that the risk of cli

Chlorhexidine vs Povidone-Iodine and Incidence of Catheter-Related Infections: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Intravascular catheters are essential in health care but remain a major source of health care-associated infections. Optimal skin antisepsis before insertion is key, yet the most effective antiseptic agent, concentration, and formulation remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To determine the concentration and formulation of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) or povidone-iodine (PVI) associated with the lowest incidence of catheter-related infections (CRIs). DATA SOURCES: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL were searched through January 7, 2025, without restrict

Mathematical model for nosocomial coronavirus infection disease 2019 transmission and patient isolation in hospital wards: A modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Considering the isolation of infected patients and the proportion of critically ill individuals requiring single-room management … nt isolation became difficult under high-occupancy conditions. The feasibility was also affected by infection control strategies, such as discharging infected or exposed patients and isolating exposed individuals in single rooms. DISCUSSION: Higher occupancy increases the risk of failed isolation measures, potentially promoting in-hospital transmission. However, t …

Pneumocystis jirovecii Pneumonia and Other Infections in Idiopathic Inflammatory Myositis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The management of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM) can be complex and challenging due to the myriad of complications they can experience. The continued use of corticosteroids, in addition to the rise of combination immunosuppressive therapy, has contributed to the ongoing concern for infection. Perhaps the most feared infection in IIM patients is Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) given its infrequent occurrence yet high mortality. The field has been, and continues to be, without evidence-based guidelines to help clinicians determine which patients wi

[Comorbidities-Their role in the treat to target concept for rheumatoid arthritis].

Treat to target (T2T) strategies and comorbidities are closely related. Strong evidence exists for reducing the risk and extent of comorbidities, such as cardiovascular (CV) diseases, depression and infections by implementing T2T concepts and inducing good disease control of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in this way. On the other hand existing comorbidities may hinder implementation of T2T concepts by aggravating RA or influencing rheumatologists to overcautiously use DMARD treatment. Among a long list of potentially relevant comorbidities with RA, in this review two particularly relevant accompan
