This study builds upon earlier work mapping the potential benefits from bovine trypanosomosis control and analysing the costs of different approaches. Updated costs were derived for five intervention techniques: trypanocides, targets, insecticide-treated cattle, aerial spraying and the release of sterile males. Two strategies were considered: continuous control and elimination. For mapping the costs, cattle densities, environmental constraints, and the presence of savannah or riverine tsetse species were taken into account. These were combined with maps of potential benefits to produce maps of

Camels are very important livestock particularly in arid and semiarid lands. The oestrid fly, Cephalopina titillator (Clark), causes nasopharyngeal myiasis in camels, and it is widely distributed in many camel breeding areas triggering health hazards and severe economic losses in camels. The prevalence of infestation of camels (slaughtered at Tokh's slaughterhouse, Qalyubia Governorate, Egypt, during the period from September 2011 to March 2012) was 41.67 % (100 out of 240). Most infested camels developed clinical signs of nasal discharge, restlessness, loss of appetite, difficulty in breathin

Reptiles in arid and semiarid zones are frequently exposed to insecticides sprayed to control locusts and grasshoppers. We evaluated the toxicity and pathogenicity of new biological and chemical control agents to the fringe-toed lizard Acanthodactylus dumerili in Mauritania, West Africa. A mycoinsecticide based on spores of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (isolate IMI 330189, Green Muscle) was tested at high challenge concentrations, using three exposure routes. Thirty-minute inhalation exposure to 3.9 x 10(8) viable conidia/L had no adverse effect. Locomotor ac…

The equilibrium partitioning methodology has been used to estimate the bioavailable or freely dissolved concentrations (Cfree) of pyrethroid insecticides in both sediments and the water column of aquatic systems. Typically, single default values for the organic carbon-water (KOC) and dissolved organic carbon-water (KDOC) partition coefficients are used to estimate the bioavailability of a given pyrethroid across sample sites. However, sorption capacities can vary across samples due to the varying quality of organic carbon among other factors. In this study, KOC and KDOC coefficients were exper…

Molecular surveillance of malaria vectors remains critically underutilized in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to limited human capacity and technical resources, despite the region bearing the highest global burden of malaria. In a North-South collaborative effort, Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) built capacity and improved on existing computational capabilities in line with molecular surveillance of Anopheles gambiae, the primary malaria vector in sub-Saharan Africa. We interrogated an amplicon panel capable of simultaneously detecting 55

Globba schomburgkii, traditionally used as a medicinal and culinary plant, has not been comprehensively investigated for its chemical composition. In this study, essential oils from samples collected in Binh Chau (BC) and Con Dao (CD), Vietnam, were analyzed by GC-MS and chiral GC-MS, and their larvicidal potential was assessed against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus following WHO guidelines. The essential oil BC was dominated by caryophyllene oxide (31.4%) and β-pinene (15.1%), whereas the essential oil (CD) represented a distinct chemotype rich in β-pinene (24.5%), (E)-β-caryophyllene (17

The extensive use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in agriculture has led to persistent soil contamination, posing serious risks to environmental and human health. Developing sustainable, in situ remediation strategies is therefore a priority. This study evaluated an integrated plant-microbe-biochar system for the remediation of CPF-contaminated soils. Indigenous CPF-degrading bacteria were isolated from agricultural soils and screened for degradation efficiency in mineral salts medium (MSM) and soil microcosms. The most efficient isolate, designated C78, was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Kle

The neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam (THX) poses ecological risks and requires efficient bioremediation strategies. We isolated a highly efficient THX-degrading strain, Paenarthrobacter nicotinovorans GY-1, from contaminated agricultural soil. Under response surface-optimized conditions, GY-1 achieved an unprecedented THX degradation rate of 2.08 mg·L-1·h-1, the highest reported for a microorganism to our knowledge. Transcriptomics, enzyme assays, and carbon-source profiling showed that strain GY-1 suppresses glycolysis and reprograms central metabolism when THX is used as the sole nitro

Mayflies and other aquatic insects are considered key species in environmental risk assessments of pesticides, particularly due to their sensitivity to neonicotinoids. While toxicity tests of pesticides are often conducted under laboratory controlled conditions, these organisms under environmentally relevant scenarios face numerous variable environmental factors including food availability, temperature, and chemical exposure. To investigate the influence of these environmental factors on toxicity, we developed Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) based toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic (TKTD) models for Chir

Aphids are major agricultural pests that cause severe crop damage. While chemical pesticides remain the dominant control strategy, their associated environmental contamination and resistance issues necessitate the development of eco-friendly biopesticides. This study employed network pharmacology and structural biology to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which Macrolactin A protects against aphids, with validation through molecular docking, 100-ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and enzymatic assays. Target prediction identified five aphid proteins as potential targets of Macrolactin

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health concern and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. One strategy to reduce populations of zoophagic Anopheles (i.e., likely to feed on other animals as well as humans) is the use of systemic veterinary parasiticides. The most widely systemic parasiticide used for this purpose is ivermectin. Ivermectin is available for livestock in two formulations; injectable and topical "pour-on." The purpose of this study was to evaluate the survival and fecundity of a zoophagic species, Anopheles stephensi, when fed on calves treate

Rhipicephalus microplus is a hematophagous ecto-parasite of cattle that has a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This tick species causes economic losses by consuming blood and reducing meat and milk production, as well as facilitating the transmission of pathogens. Different classes of acaricides, including organophosphates, synthetic pyrethroids, insect growth regulators, formamidines, phenylpyrazoles, and macrocyclic lactones, are currently used sequentially or simultaneously to control R. microplus infestations. The frequent use of these acaricides

BACKGROUND: Despite global malaria control efforts, malaria continues to cause approximately 241-249 million cases and over 600,000 deaths annually. Ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug with endectocidal activity against mosquitoes feeding on treated hosts, has been proposed as a potential malaria vector-control intervention.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effectiveness of ivermectin in reducing malaria transmission outcomes in adult populations, including malaria incidence, prevalence, mosquito mortality, and safety outcomes.
METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines,

The increasing resistance of agricultural pests and disease-vectoring arthropods to synthetic pesticides underscores the urgent need for novel and sustainable biocidal agents. This study evaluates, for the first time, the insect antifeedant and ixodicidal activities of essential oils derived from ten Amazonian Piper species and their major constituents. Antifeedant effects were assessed against Spodoptera littoralis, Myzus persicae, and Rhopalosiphum padi, whereas ixodicidal activity was tested on Hyalomma lusitanicum. Additionally, the effects of these oils on the plant-parasitic nematode Mel

BACKGROUND: Gains in malaria transmission reduction achieved through insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are reversing amid emerging artemisinin partial resistance. While sensitive diagnostics are key to monitoring resistant parasite-driven outbreaks, most malaria outbreak models treat diagnostic sensitivity as a fixed background parameter, obscuring its role both in clinical progression and disease burden.
METHODS: We developed an eight-compartment deterministic model in which diagnostic sensitivity acts as a bifurcation parameter partitioning individuals infected with uncomplicated malaria into

BACKGROUND: In Kenya, the extensive use of agrochemicals in fruits and vegetable farming raises concerns about pesticide residues in agricultural products including tomato fruits. There are still a number of highly hazardous pesticides including mancozeb, glyphosate acid, chlorpyrifos, acephate and cypermethrin amongst many others that are still used in Kenya despite being banned in Europe due to harmful effects on humans and other animals. This study aimed to evaluate the residual levels of cypermethrin pesticide in locally produced tomato in Laikipia County, Kenya. Also, the study identified

BACKGROUND: Laos aims to eliminate malaria by 2030, with residual transmission present in the south. Understanding how LLINs function in relation to vector and human behaviours, and linking this to epidemiological outcomes, is critical for improving vector control strategies. Integrating human behaviour observations (HBOs) with entomological and epidemiological data helps identify gaps in protection and inform national malaria programs.
METHODS: Entomological surveillance of Anopheles mosquitoes was conducted alongside HBOs in both rainy (July-September 2022) and dry (February-April 2023) sea

Dinotefuran, a chiral neonicotinoid insecticide, is widely detected in environmental and biological samples and exhibits enantioselective effects on non-target organisms. However, its potential hepatotoxic mechanisms remain largely unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that S-(+)-dinotefuran (S-DIN) induced HepG2 cells more pronounced oxidative stress and energy metabolism disruption compared with R-dinotefuran (R-DIN). Targeted metabolomics covering 25 key metabolites involved in energy metabolism revealed that S-DIN caused the broadest and most substantial perturbations, characterized by t
