Applications of Robotic Exoskeletons as Motion-Assistive Systems in Cancer Rehabilitation.

Robotic exoskeletons have emerged as promising motion-assistive technologies to meet the growing demand for structured, personalized cancer rehabilitation. This review critically examines their application in enhancing functional recovery, alleviating cancer-related fatigue, and improving quality of life among cancer patients and survivors. We first outline current evidence-based exercise strategies in cancer rehabilitation, followed by an analysis of how robotic exoskeletons complement and extend these approaches by restoring mobility, strengthening musculature, and supporting psychological w

Diaphragm dysfunction: how to diagnose and how to treat?

The diaphragm, crucial for respiratory function, is susceptible to dysfunction due to various pathologies that can affect the nervous system, neuromuscular junction or the muscle itself. Diaphragmatic dysfunction presents with symptoms ranging from exertional dyspnoea to respiratory failure, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Diagnosis involves clinical evaluation complemented by imaging and pulmonary function tests. Chest radiography, fluoroscopy, and ultrasonography are pivotal in assessing diaphragmatic movement and excursion, offering varying sensitivities and specificities

Beyond limitations: a qualitative inquiry into the lived experiences of adults with congenital radioulnar synostosis.

PURPOSE: This study explored the lived experiences of individuals with congenital radioulnar synostosis (CRUS), focusing on how the condition effects their daily occupations from diagnosis through adulthood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A phenomenological approach with thematic analysis was used. Eleven individuals diagnosed with CRUS, adults, participated in semi-structured Zoom interviews. They shared personal accounts about physical limitations, adaptations, and interactions with the healthcare system. RESULTS: Three central themes emerged: (1) I can't move that way-capturing the physical limit

Cardiovascular Disease Update: Heart Failure Update.

Heart failure (HF) is a clinical condition characterized by the heart's inability to pump blood effectively enough to meet the body's metabolic demands; typically this happens because of impaired ventricular filling or ejection. HF affects millions of people in the United States, with increasing prevalence, hospitalizations, and deaths. Classification of HF by left ventricular ejection fraction divides it into HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), mildly reduced ejection fraction, and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Early diagnosis and appropriate staging, using tools such as natriur

Retinal imaging and tissue analysis for frontotemporal degeneration: recent advances and challenges for biomarker development.

Frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) is a group of neurodegenerative disorders affecting behaviour, language and executive functions. FTD is a common cause of early-onset dementia, but there are no FDA-approved treatments or established biomarkers for diagnosing and tracking these conditions, making early and accurate diagnosis challenging during life. Recent advances in retinal imaging, particularly through technologies like optical coherence tomography (OCT), have emerged as promising tools for identifying potential biomarkers for FTD and related neurodegenerative diseases. The retina, being an

Mechanisms driving the functional maturation of the developing mammalian auditory pathway.

The accurate representation of sound in the central auditory pathway of mammals depends on the cochlea, the peripheral sensory organ, which is optimised to detect acoustic signals with unparalleled temporal precision. Beyond its role in converting acoustic stimuli into electrical signals, the cochlea also plays a key role in shaping the maturation of the auditory pathway during pre-hearing stages. This process is essential for creating the tonotopic maps used to identify a broad range of sound frequencies. To achieve this extraordinary task, the sensory hair cells and supporting cells of the p

Narcolepsy: Beyond the Classic Pentad.

Narcolepsy is a rare, disabling, chronic neurologic disorder that requires lifelong management of symptoms with pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic methods. The pentad symptoms of narcolepsy include excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, disrupted nighttime sleep, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations. However, people with narcolepsy often experience additional symptoms and disability related to nonpentad symptoms and comorbidities, such as cognitive, psychiatric, metabolic, and sleep disturbances. Current treatment strategies have focused primarily on addressing two of t

Age-Stratified Treg Responses During Viral Infections of the Central Nervous System: A Literature Review.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a vital role in limiting inflammation and resolving the immune response after a viral infection. Within the central nervous system (CNS), Tregs are especially important for the protection of neurons, which have limited regenerative capacity, and the preservation of myelin sheaths, which support neuronal function and survival. Nevertheless, viral infections of the CNS often result in enduring neurological dysfunction, especially in more vulnerable age groups such as newborns and the elderly. Although it is appreciated that Treg activity changes with age, it is un

Design, development and evaluation of registry software for upper limb disabilities.

Upper limb disabilities, if not managed, controlled and treated, significantly affect the physical and mental condition, daily activities and quality of life. Registries can help control and manage and even treat these disabilities by collecting clinical-management data of upper limb disabilities. Therefore, the aim of this study is to design, develop and evaluate a registry system for upper limb disabilities in terms of usability. By having identified data elements in the exploratory phase, we developed our registry software using hypertext preprocessor (PHP) programming language in XAMPP sof

Update on vitamin D role in severe infections and sepsis.

Severe infections frequently require admission to the intensive care unit and cause life-threatening complications in critically ill patients. In this setting, severe infections are acknowledged as prerequisites for the development of sepsis, whose pathophysiology implies a dysregulated host response to pathogens, leading to disability and mortality worldwide.Vitamin D is a secosteroid hormone that plays a pivotal role to maintain immune system homeostasis, which is of paramount importance to resolve infection and modulate the burden of sepsis. Specifically, vitamin D deficiency has been widel

Treatment of Autosomal-Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a chronic systemic disease that affects all races and ethnicities. It is the fourth leading cause of end-stage kidney disease, and it has a heterogenous phenotype ranging from mild to severe disease. Identifying patients with ADPKD who are at risk of rapid progression can guide therapeutic decisions. Several tools to predict disease severity are available, based on features such as total kidney volume assessed with magnetic resonance imaging, PKD genotype, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) trajectory, and the occurrence of hyper

Efficacy and Safety Analysis of Botox Application and Iatrogenic Botulism: Panacea or Peril?

Clostridium botulinum toxin-A (BoNT-A) creates temporary paralysis in the muscles by acting on the muscle-nerve junction. It is injected into the mimic muscles when a decrease in the movements of the mimic muscles is desired. Despite many favorable applications, the use of BoNT-A is not without drawbacks. Although there is no expected serious side effect on health in BoNT-A treatments, various problems can be encountered in patients treated for aesthetic purposes. Botulism is a rare but potentially life-threatening syndrome, which is caused by the toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium bo

New Phage-Derived Antibacterial Enzyme PolaR Targeting Rothia spp.

Rothia is an opportunistic pathogen, particularly life-threatening for the immunocompromised. It is associated with pneumonia, endocarditis, peritonitis and many other serious infections, including septicemia. Of note, Rothia mucilaginousa produces metabolites that support and increase overgrowth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, one of the ESKAPE bacteria. Endolysins are considered as antibacterial enzymes derived from bacteriophages that selectively and efficiently kill susceptible bacteria without harming human cells or the normal microbiome. Here, we applied a computational analysis of metagenomi

Phenotypic and proteomic analysis of plasma extracellular vesicles highlights them as potential biomarkers of primary Sjögren syndrome.

Sjögren syndrome (SjS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of the exocrine gland epithelia, causing a dryness of mucosa called sicca symptoms, and whose main life-threatening complication is lymphoma. There is a need for new biomarkers in this disease, notably diagnostic biomarkers for patients with genuine sicca symptoms that do not meet current criteria, and prognostic biomarkers for patients at risk of lymphoma. Plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising biomarker candidates in several diseases, but their potential has not yet been explored in SjS. In this proof

Corona, Lime, Sun, Rash: A Case Report of Severe Phytophotodermatitis in an Active Duty Soldier.

Dermatological complaints constitute a large portion of patient visits to both emergency departments and military clinics. Proper assessment to separate the benign diagnoses from life-threatening may prove challenging based on seemingly non-specific history and physical examination. Similarly, reflexive specialty consultation may delay treatment and overload the health care system. Phytophotodermatitis is caused by contact with sensitizing agents, including lime juice, which triggers localized skin reactions when exposed to ultraviolet A light. The resulting progression of erythema, edema, pai

Diet-driven microbiome changes and physical activity in cancer patients.

Exploring the role of the gut microbiome in oncology is gaining more attention, mainly due to its ability to shape the immune system in cancer patients. A well-balanced microbial composition forms a symbiotic relationship with the host organism. Mounting evidence supports the potential of modifiable lifestyle factors, such as diet and physical activity, in restoring intestinal dysbiosis related to cancer development and treatment. In this Minireview, we describe the host-microbiome interplay following different dietary patterns, including a high-fat diet, fiber-rich diet, diet rich in rice and

Trends in the Epidemiology of Pneumocystis Pneumonia in Immunocompromised Patients without HIV Infection.

The increasing morbidity and mortality of life-threatening Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in immunocompromised people poses a global concern, prompting the World Health Organization to list it as one of the 19 priority invasive fungal diseases, calling for increased research and public health action. In response to this initiative, we provide this review on the epidemiology of PCP in non-HIV patients with various immunodeficient conditions, including the use of immunosuppressive agents, cancer therapies, solid organ and stem cell transplantation, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, inherited o
