Comparative Transcriptomic Analyses of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells of COVID-19 Patients without Pneumonia and with Severe Pneumonia in the First Year of Follow-Up.

The multisystemic effects of COVID-19 may continue for a longer time period following the acute phase, depending on the severity of the disease. However, long-term systemic transcriptomic changes associated with COVID-19 disease and the impact of disease severity are not fully understood. We aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 and its severity on transcriptomic alterations in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) following 1 year of the disease. PBMCs were isolated from the peripheral blood of healthy control donors who did not have COVID-19 (C; n = 13), from COVID-19 patients wit

Speech signals-based Parkinson's disease diagnosis using hybrid autoencoder-LSTM models.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that occurs as a result of a decrease in the chemical called dopamine in the brain. There is no definitive treatment for PD, but some medications used to control symptoms in the early stages have a critical effect on the progression of the disease. Approximately 90% of patients with PD have vocal problems, and although voice disorders seen in the early stages are not apparent in the patient's speech, they can be detected by acoustic analysis. In this study, a decision support system was proposed for the diagnosis of PD utilizing the feat

Osteonecrosis of Femoral Head, An Overlooked Long-Term Complication after Paraquat Intoxication: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

With increasing numbers of patients surviving acute intoxication phase, long-term complication after paraquat intoxication is a topic worth exploring, such as osteonecrosis (ON) of femoral head. We reviewed 86 paraquat-intoxicated survivors between 2000 and 2012 in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, a 3700-bed tertiary hospital in Taiwan. With all the patients underwent same detoxification protocol in the acute stage, 17.4% of paraquat poisoning survivors developed ON of femoral head requiring surgery during follow up. Most of ON episodes occurred within 2 to 4 years after paraquat intoxication and

Meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine.

Meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia are important causes of morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world. More than 90% of the cases are caused by serogroups A, B and C; the remaining 10% are largely caused by the W-135 and Y strains. During the mid-to-late 1990s there was an increase in meningococcal serogroup (MS) C disease in the UK and some parts of Europe. MS C polysaccharide vaccines that were developed in the 1960s are weakly immunogenic and not protective in infants under 2 years of age, but are effective in older recipients. Meningitec (Wyeth-Ayerst) is produced by conjugat

EEG-based emotion recognition using hybrid CNN and LSTM classification.

Emotions are a mental state that is accompanied by a distinct physiologic rhythm, as well as physical, behavioral, and mental changes. In the latest days, physiological activity has been used to study emotional reactions. This study describes the electroencephalography (EEG) signals, the brain wave pattern, and emotion analysis all of these are interrelated and based on the consequences of human behavior and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Post-traumatic stress disorder effects for long-term illness are associated with considerable suffering, impairment, and social/emotional impairment.

Trimetazidine, an Anti-Ischemic Drug, Reduces the Antielectroshock Effects of Certain First-Generation Antiepileptic Drugs.

Trimetazidine (TMZ), an anti-ischemic drug for improving cellular metabolism, is mostly administered to patients with poorly controlled ischemic heart disease (IHD). Since IHD is considered the most frequent causative factor of cardiac arrhythmias, and these often coexist with seizure disorders, we decided to investigate the effect of TMZ in the electroconvulsive threshold test (ECT) and its influence on the action of four first-generation antiepileptic drugs in the maximal electroshock test (MES) in mice. The TMZ (up to 120 mg/kg) did not affect the ECT, but applied at doses of 20-120 mg/kg i

Maternal stress prior to conception impairs memory and decreases right dorsal hippocampal volume and basilar spine density in the prefrontal cortex of adult male offspring.

Chronic parental stress impacts offspring functioning throughout life. Chronic variable stress prior to conception impairs offspring development in terms of behavior, neuroanatomy, and neurobiology. Previously, our lab demonstrated that even a consistent stressor experienced by the sire or the dam shapes offspring development beginning in early life. Here, we show how consistent maternal stress prior to conception influences the brain and behavior of offspring in adolescence and adulthood. Female Long-Evans rats were exposed to elevated platform stress twice daily for 27 consecutive days immed

Disease Classification Based on Eye Movement Features With Decision Tree and Random Forest.

Medical research shows that eye movement disorders are related to many kinds of neurological diseases. Eye movement characteristics can be used as biomarkers of Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease (AD), schizophrenia, and other diseases. However, due to the unknown medical mechanism of some diseases, it is difficult to establish an intuitive correspondence between eye movement characteristics and diseases. In this paper, we propose a disease classification method based on decision tree and random forest (RF). First, a variety of experimental schemes are designed to obtain eye movement ima

Perceptual asymmetries are preserved in memory for highly familiar faces of self and friend.

We investigated the effect of familiarity on people's perception of facial likeness by asking participants to choose which of two mirror-symmetric chimeric images (made from the left or right half of a photograph of a face) looked more like an original image. In separate trials the participants made this judgment for their own face and for the face of a close friend; half of them matched to a true image of the original and half matched to a mirror image of the original. In the case of matching to a friend's face presented in the familiar orientation, over 80% of participants chose the left-lef

Potential effect of herbal antidepressants on cognitive deficit: Pharmacological activity and possible molecular mechanism.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cognitive symptom is a "core" symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with clear deficit in memory, social and occupational function, and may persist during the remitting phase. Therefore, the remission of cognitive symptom has been considered as one of the main objectives in the treatment of MDD. Herbal antidepressants have been used to treat MDD, and there has been great advances in the understanding of the ability of these herbs to improve cognitive deficit linked to brain injury and various diseases including depression, Alzheimer disease, diabet

Symptomatic Trends and Time to Recovery for Long COVID Patients Infected During the Omicron Phase.

Background: Since the pathophysiology of long COVID is not yet fully understood, there are no specific methods for its treatment; however, its individual symptoms can currently be treated. Long COVID is characterized by symptoms that persist at least 2 to 3 months after contracting COVID-19, although it is difficult to predict how long such symptoms may persist. Methods: In the present study, 774 patients who first visited our outpatient clinic during the Omicron period from February 2022 to October 2024 were divided into two groups: the early recovery (ER) group (370 cases; 47.8%), who recove

A sustainable industrial waste control with AI for predicting CO2 for climate change monitoring.

As the challenge of climate change continues to grow, we need creative solutions to predict better and track industrial waste carbon emissions, focusing on sustainable waste management practices. The present study proposes a state-of-the-art Metaverse framework that puts artificial intelligence into action in predicting carbon emissions using energy use patterns and industrial social factors. At the heart of this framework lies a hybrid deep learning model combining convolutional neural networks and Long-term, short-term memory to model complicated spatial and temporal dependencies inherent in

Sevoflurane and desflurane effects on early cognitive function after low-risk surgery: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Deleterious effects on short-term and long-term quality of life have been associated with the development of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) after general anesthesia. Yet, the progress in the field is still required. Most of the studies investigate POCD after major surgery, so scarce evidence exists about the incidence and effect different anesthetics have on POCD development after minor procedures. In this study, we compared early postoperative cognitive function of the sevoflurane and desflurane patients who experienced a low-risk surgery of thyroid glan

A pilot study to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of lesion network guided transcranial electrical stimulation in outpatients with psychosis spectrum illness.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) may improve psychosis symptoms, but few investigations have targeted brain regions causally linked to psychosis symptoms. We implemented a novel montage targeting the extrastriate visual cortex (eVC) previously identified by lesion network mapping in the manifestation of visual hallucinations. OBJECTIVE: To determine if lesion network guided High Definition-tES (HD-tES) to the eVC is safe and efficacious in reducing symptoms related to psychosis. METHODS: We conducted a single-blind crossover pilot study (NCT04870710) in patients with psy

Cognitive Decline Before and After Incident Coronary Events.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that coronary heart disease (CHD) may be associated with accelerated cognitive decline. However, the temporal pattern of cognitive decline before and after incident CHD remains largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the cognitive trajectory before and after incident CHD diagnosis in a national representative cohort age ≥50 years. METHODS: This study included 7,888 participants (mean age 62.1 ± 10.2 years) with no history of stroke or incident stroke during follow-up from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Par

The Amyloid-β Oligomer Hypothesis: Beginning of the Third Decade.

The amyloid-β oligomer (AβO) hypothesis was introduced in 1998. It proposed that the brain damage leading to Alzheimer's disease (AD) was instigated by soluble, ligand-like AβOs. This hypothesis was based on the discovery that fibril-free synthetic preparations of AβOs were potent CNS neurotoxins that rapidly inhibited long-term potentiation and, with time, caused selective nerve cell death (Lambert et al., 1998). The mechanism was attributed to disrupted signaling involving the tyrosine-protein kinase Fyn, mediated by an unknown toxin receptor. Over 4,000 articles concerning AβOs have been pu

Effects of 1950 MHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields on Aβ processing in human neuroblastoma and mouse hippocampal neuronal cells.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease leading to progressive loss of memory and other cognitive functions. One of the well-known pathological markers of AD is the accumulation of amyloid-beta protein (Aβ), and its plaques, in the brain. Recent studies using Tg-5XFAD mice as a model of AD have reported that exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) from cellular phones reduced Aβ plaques in the brain and showed beneficial effects on AD. In this study, we examined whether exposure to 1950 MHz RF-EMF affects Aβ processing in neural cells. We exposed HT22 mouse h
