Eighty patients with premenstrual tension were treated prospectively with mefenamic acid for a mean period of 13 months. Most of them (86%) reported significant relief of premenstrual tension. Symptoms of dysfunctional menorrhagia or primary dysmenorrhoea were also alleviated. A four-year retrospective review of 55 patients with disseminated infections from Neisseria gonorrhoeae revealed that this complication occurs in young adults, with a predominance in women (80%). The most common manifestation of disseminated gonococcal infection was arthritis, which occurred in 47 patients (85.5%). Toxic-shock syndrome (TSS) was first described in 1978, but cases of illness meeting the TSS case definition (presence of fever, hypotension, rash, and desquamation, as well as involvement of three organ systems and absence of evidence for other etiologies) have occurred for many years. Individuals of Spanish and Mexican descent in New Mexico have used a number of plants as emmenagogues and abortifacients. Of the plants used, cotton root bark (Gossypium sp.), inmortal ((Asclepias capricornu Woodson), poleo chino (Hedeoma oblongifolia (Gray) Heller), rue Ruta graveolens L.), wormseed (Chenopodium ambrosioides L.), and three species of Artemesia seem to be used most widely. Numerous well-documented endocrine effects of oral contraceptives (OCs) can be subdivided into two groups: (a) those relating to the hypothalamic and pituitary-ovarian system, the breast and the genital tract of the human female and (b) those related indirectly to laboratory testing of other endocrine glands. Pituitary responses to 100 mcg. of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) administered subcutaneously were studied in 34 cases of amenorrhea or anovulatory oligomenorrhea associated with galactorrhea. Serum LH and FSH were assayed in 31 girls with normal pre puberty, precocious puberty, premature thelarche, and premature adrenarche, aged 2 to 9 years. The effect of synthetic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) on serum gonadotropins was evaluated in eleven of them. Adolescent girls and single women with progressive hirsutism due to polycystic ovaries present a therapeutic dilemma. Clomiphene citrate is useful only to induce ovulation and has no beneficial effect on hirsutism. Infertility may be caused by gross pelvic pathology, difficulties with insemination of the cervix and uterine cavity, partial or complete occlusion of the fallopian tubes, female endocrine abnormalities or male factors. Some forms of pelvic pathology as well as some tubal occlusions are amenable to surgical correction. Clomiphene citrate has given good results in some patients with endocrine abnormalities.

38 specimens of benign breast tissue from young women and 92 primary breast carcinomas were evaluated for tritiated thymidine ([3H]TdR) labeling index (TLI) by in vitro pulse labeling. Sensitive and specific displacement analysis methods for the assay of steroid hormones in small volumes of plasma are described. Plasma sex steroid and gonadotrophin hormone patterns were determined throughout a number of normal menstrual cycles. The mean cycles showed patterns which were similar to those described by other workers. However, examination of individual cycles provided information which may contribute to our understanding of menstrual cycle regulation with particular reference to the pattern of 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone and steroid-gonadotrophin interactions.

Lergotrile (Compound 83636), a specific inhibitor of prolactin release, was administered to 5 women with galactorrhea. Only 1 of the 5 had an elevated serum prolactin (hPRL) value, but Compound 83636 induced a decrease in serum hPRL in all cases. All patients had cessation of breast secretion within 72 days after initiation of lergotrile. LRH administration (100 pg) evoked a variable gonadotropin response before and during treatment with the ergot alkaloid. By contrast, serum prolactin values remained essentially unaltered after injection of LRH under the same conditions.

Results of a postal questionnaire survey of 638 women aged 45 to 54, living in the London area in 1964-65, indicate (consistently with other recent surveys) that hot flushes and night sweats are clearly associated with the onset of a natural menopause and that they occur in the majority of women.
