Randomized controlled trial of transdiagnostic group treatments for primary care patients with common mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: The purpose was to test the effectiveness of two transdiagnostic group interventions compared to care as usual (CAU) for patients with anxiety, depressive or stress-related disorders within a primary health care context. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of cognitive-based-behavioural therapy (CBT) and multimodal intervention (MMI) on the quality of life and relief of psychological symptoms of patients with common mental disorders or problems attending primary health care centre. METHODS: Patients (n = 278), aged 18-65 years, were referred to the study by the GPs and 245 were ra

Variations in prison mental health services in England and Wales.

In responding to high levels of psychiatric morbidity amongst prisoners and recognising earlier poor quality prison mental health care, prison mental health in-reach teams have been established in England and Wales over the last decade. They are mostly provided by the National Health Service (NHS), which provides the majority of UK healthcare services. Over the same period, the prison population has grown to record levels, such that prisons in England and Wales now contain almost 90,000 of the world's overall prison population of over 10 million people (roughly the size of Paris or Istanbul).

Metformin exposure affects human and mouse fetal testicular cells.

BACKGROUND: Metformin is a drug used in the treatment of diabetes and of some disorders related to insulin resistance, such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Gestational diabetes can cause complications for both mother and child, and some studies have shown a beneficial effect of metformin during pregnancy without an increase in perinatal complications. However, the effects on the gonads have not been properly studied. Here we investigated the effect of metformin administered during pregnancy on the development and function of the fetal testis. METHODS: A dual approach in vitro and in vivo using

[Duration of breastfeeding from 15 maternity wards of the perinatal network in the Pays de la Loire area].

The "sécurité naissance - naître ensemble" network in the Pays de la Loire region of France, with 24 maternity units, conducted a survey of nursing women to determine the duration of breastfeeding and to study the factors influencing this practice. Phone calls were made to mothers at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 6 months or until weaning. The statistical methods used were the Kaplan-Meier survival curve method with the calculation of the median duration of breastfeeding (exclusive or partial) in weeks, and the Cox multivariate model. The hazard ratio or relative risk (RR) was used in univa

Use of antidepressant medication and risk of type 2 diabetes: results from three cohorts of US adults.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The results of several studies have suggested a potential positive association between use of antidepressant medication (ADM) and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. We examined this association in three cohorts of US adults. METHODS: We followed 29,776 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS, 1990-2006), 61,791 women in the Nurses' Health Study I (NHS I, 1996-2008) and 76,868 women in NHS II (1993-2005), who were free of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline. The mean baseline ages for participants from the HPFS and NHS I and II were 56

The relationship between cesarean section and labor induction.

BACKGROUND: Numerous study results vary when analyzing the relationship between labor induction and the likelihood of cesarean delivery; and few have accounted for the multiple influences of maternal sociodemographic characteristics combined with the provider and hospital in subsequent birth outcomes such as cesarean section. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the likelihood of cesarean birth following labor induction while accounting for maternal, hospital, and provider characteristics. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective descriptive design using secondary data was employed to determine w

Genetic polymorphisms of angiotensin-2 type 1 receptor and angiotensinogen and risk of renal dysfunction and coronary heart disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Increased activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may be important in promoting coronary heart disease (CHD) and renal dysfunction, but limited data are available on associations between angiotensin type 1 receptor (AGT1R) and angiotensinogen (AGT) genotypes in type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Study participants were diabetics from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS) and the Nurses' Health Study (NHS). We analyzed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with cardiovascular pathophysiology (including AGT1R T573C, AGT1R A1166C, and AGT M235T) and presence of

Endogenous steroid hormone concentrations and risk of breast cancer: does the association vary by a woman's predicted breast cancer risk?

PURPOSE: To examine whether the associations of endogenous estrogens and testosterone with breast cancer risk differ between high- and low-risk women, as determined by the Gail model and the Rosner and Colditz model, and by family history of breast cancer. METHODS: We conducted a prospective nested case-control study within the Nurses' Health Study. From 1989 or 1990 until June 2000, blood samples were collected, 418 breast cancer patient cases were identified, and two controls (total n = 817) were matched to each case. We classified women as high or low risk based on their family history of

[Relationship between pregnancy factors and low birth weight infants, miscarriages, and stillbirths: A follow-up survey on birth conditions of pregnant women who received the maternal and child health handbook from public health nurses and midwives].

Objectives The final evaluation of the Japanese government's Healthy Parents and Children 21 project in 2014 noted an increase in low birth weight infants as an aspect that worsened. In order to reduce the number of low birth weight infants, miscarriages, and stillbirths in Kurume City, we conducted a survey aimed at researching new measures, including the search for new risk factors of birth complications. Methods The participants of this study were 2,986 pregnant women who submitted a pregnancy notification form in 2014. We excluded women who moved away from Kurume city or for whom birth weig

Prenatal and early life factors and risk of Parkinson's disease.

Few studies have investigated the relation between early life factors and risk of Parkinson's disease (PD), although a potential role of exposures during pregnancy and childhood has been hypothesized. The study population comprised participants in two prospective cohorts: the Nurses' Health Study (121,701 female nurses followed up from 1976-2002) and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (51,529 male health professionals followed up from 1986-2002). PD risk was examined in relation to season of birth, birthweight, parental age at birth, preterm birth, multiple birth, ever having been breast

Understanding panic disorder in chronic respiratory disease.

As well as being physically debilitating, respiratory diseases present significant challenges to the psychological well-being of individuals and their families and are recognized to have an impact on health-care services, resources and time. Panic attacks and disorder are particularly prevalent in people with respiratory conditions and appear to be associated with reduced lung function. However, recent evidence suggests that the aetiology of panic in this area may be related more to underlying psychological processes, which can influence cognitions that are related to the experience of respira
