Consequences of ankle joint immobilisation: insights from a morphometric analysis about fibre typification, intramuscular connective tissue, and muscle spindle in rats.

Orthosis immobilisations are routinely used in orthopaedic procedures. This intervention is applicable in bone fractures, ligament injuries, and tendonitis, among other disorders of the musculoskeletal system. We aimed to evaluate the effects of ankle joint functional immobilisation on muscle fibre morphology, connective tissue, muscle spindle and fibre typification triggered by a novel metallic orthosis. We developed a rodent-proof experimental orthosis able to hold the tibiotalar joint in a functional position for short and long terms. The tibialis anterior muscles of free and immobilised le…

Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Effects of Rosehip in Inflammatory Musculoskeletal Disorders and Its Active Molecules.

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which greatly reduce the quality of life of people. In addition to non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs used in treatment, molecules isolated from natural sources are also considered as new options in the treatment of these inflammatory diseases. In this review, in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies on standardized rosehip (Rosa canina L.) fruits without seed used for joint health due to their anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antioxidant effects and active compounds isolated from these fruits…

Static postural balance evaluation and an investigation of the relationship with joint health in children with severe haemophilia: a controlled cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent hemarthroses disturbing force/movement control are likely to impair postural balance. AIM: To investigate the possi … nce evaluation in CwH. Increased mediolateral oscillations may be an early sign of disorders of the musculoskeletal system in CwH. In addition to improving joint health, postural balance exercises that increase MLD stability have to be included in the rehabilitation programme of CwH.

Frequency of Fabry disease in a juvenile idiopathic arthritis cohort.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease (FD) is a rare, X-linked, multisystemic lysosomal storage disorder (LSD) that results from a deficiency in the hydrolase alpha-galactosidase A (⍺-GalA). During childhood, classic FD symptomatology is rare. The majority of children may show non-specific symptoms, including in the musculoskeletal system. The prevalence of FD among juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) patients is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the frequency of FD in a JIA cohort, characterizing early clinical symptoms, enzyme titers, and GLA genotyping. METHODS: Children with JIA follo…

Intraosseous Lipoma of the Calcaneum.

Lipomas are benign lesions of adipose tissue, which commonly affect the soft tissues but are rarely found in the musculoskeletal system. Intraosseous lipomas are rare benign tumors and even rarer in calcaneum, only to be found incidentally in the majority of cases. We report a case of a 45-year-old male patient who presented to the outpatient department with complaints of bilateral heel pain, which was initially treated conservatively as the presentation was similar to plantar fasciitis. On further follow-up, a plain radiograph of the ankles was taken, which showed a lytic lesion of the calcan…

Gait phenotype in Batten disease: A marker of disease progression.

BACKGROUND: Gait impairment and its etiologic correlate has not previously been subject of special attention in Batten disease. METHODS: In the present review, the clinical picture of gait phenotype during Batten disease course accompanied by descriptions of the known concomitant patho-anatomical changes is presented. RESULTS: In CLN1 a non-rhythmic gait is seen around 1-1½ years of age. Shortly after, postural hypotonia and exaggerated tendon reflexes develop. The disease reaches a burnt-out stage during the third year of age and subsequently the children are almost without voluntary moveme

Kickboxers and crossfitters vertebral column curvatures in sagittal plane: Crossfit practice influence in kickboxers body posture.

BACKGROUND: In combat sports, long-term training load can lead to sport-specific functional and body posture adaptations. The most often observed changes are in the shape of the anterior-posterior spinal curvatures. The abnormal inclination of the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine may lead to an additional overload of the musculoskeletal system and spinal pain or decrease sports performance. Therefore it is crucial to prevent disadvantageous body posture features. AIM: The aim was to examine differences in vertebral column's sagittal curves parameters between kickboxing fighters, kickb…

Computational musculoskeletal modeling of compensatory movements in the upper limb.

It is well documented that most upper limb amputees utilize compensatory movement strategies to accomplish everyday tasks when using a prosthetic device and that musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs) are more common in this population. However, little information is available on how the loss of distal degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the arm impact muscle force, thereby limiting our understanding of the mechanism by which these MSCs are manifesting. Knowledge of how a loss of DOFs may lead to MSCs can enable clinicians to provide more targeted guidance on how best to restore functional ability while a

Comparison of fecal glucocorticoid metabolite concentrations in hand- versus parent-reared whooping cranes (Grus americana).

Endangered whooping cranes (Grus americana) have been produced in captivity for reintroduction programs since the 1980s, using techniques such as artificial insemination, multiple clutching, and captive-rearing to speed recovery efforts. Chicks are often hand-reared (HR) by caretakers in crane costumes, socialized into groups and released together, unlike parent-reared (PR) cranes that are raised individually by a male/female crane pair and released singly. HR cranes historically exhibit greater morbidity rates during development than PR cranes, involving musculoskeletal and respiratory system

Minoxidil decreases collagen I deposition and tissue-like contraction in clubfoot-derived cells: a way to improve conservative treatment of relapsed clubfoot?

AIM: Clubfoot is a congenital deformity affecting the musculoskeletal system, resulting in contracted and stiff tissue in the medial part of the foot. Minoxidil (MXD) has an inhibitory effect on lysyl hydroxylase, which influences the quality of extracellular matrix crosslinking, and could therefore be used to reduce the stiffness and to improve the flexibility of the tissue. We assessed the in vitro antifibrotic effects of minoxidil on clubfoot-derived cells. METHODS: Cell viability and proliferation were quantified by xCELLigence, MTS, and LIVE/DEAD assays. The amount of collagen I deposite…

Does Plantar Pressure Distribution Influence the Lumbar Multifidus Muscle Thickness in Asymptomatic Individuals? A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Atrophy can occur in the lumbar multifidus (LM) muscle quickly as a result of various musculoskeletal problems. Knowing factors influencing muscle thickness of the LM will provide important clues about lumbopelvic stability. OBJECTIVES: Although there are several studies in the literature investigating the adverse effects of foot-ankle postural disorders on the lumbopelvic region, to our knowledge there has been no investigation of plantar pressure distribution (PPD) as a factor influencing muscle thickness of the LM. The aim of this study was to determine whether PPD could affect
