OBJECTIVES: There is scarce information about sedation in nursing homes at the end of life. We aimed to assess (1) the use of sedatives generally and "sedatives with continuous effect," based on objective operational criteria, within the last week of life in nursing homes and (2) factors associated with this treatment.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study, using the nursing homes' medical records.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal emergency in the NICU, with often devastating consequences. The etiology of NEC is probably multifactorial, with preterm infants at the highest risk. Upper airway endoscopy in children is a high-risk procedure, which should only be performed by a well trained and fully equipped team. The sequence of procedures, at least at the beginning of the procedure, is always the same and must be performed very rigorously. Communication between the various operators, especially the surgeon, the anaesthetist and the operating room nurse, is essential before starting the procedure, as anticipation of sudden difficulties is the key to effective management. Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is an often misdiagnosed and evasive compression neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve and its branches (Muhammed et al., 1995). A variety of causes may lead to the development of this painful foot condition. An awareness of the anatomy and physiology of TTS will allow for its increased recognition and treatment. Nurses in clinical settings such as ambulatory centers, physician offices, and acute care settings (especially orthopaedics and rheumatology units) will be able to apply this information in their practices.
