The neurofibromatoses consist of at least two distinct autosomal dominant hereditary disorders. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is due to a lesion on chromosome 17q. The value of high spatial resolution and contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was assessed in 69 patients with either femoral head avascular necrosis (AVN) or transient bone marrow edema lesions. In a prospective study 21 patients suffering from HIV-1 infection underwent MR imaging. The following tumours were found: eight Kaposi's sarcomas, four lymphomas, two squamous-cell carcinomas, and three cases of lymphoid hyperplasia. This study has dealt with the inhibition by lead of glutamine synthetase (GS) activity in homogenates of mixed glial primary cultures, 95% enriched in differentiating astrocytes. A 70% inhibition was observed with a lead concentration of only 2.5 microM. Prevention of the inhibition by addition of EDTA or dithiothreitol is compatible with the conclusion that the effect is mediated by binding of lead ion to sulfhydryl moieties of the enzyme. Twenty-five patients with clinical and CT findings indicating supratentorial cerebral infarct were prospectively studied with MR.
