The role of interleukin 36γ in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition process of chronic rhinosinusitis: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an important characteristic in the remodelling of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). IL-36γ and fibroblast activation protein (FAP) may exacerbate remodelling in CRS. Here, we aimed to determine whether IL-36γ and FAP expression are associated with EMT and may be a predictor for CRSwNP prognosis. METHODS: Fifty-two non-Eos CRSwNP patients and 12 control patients were obtained and were followed up for more than 1 year after surgery. IL-36γ, FAP and EMT markers expression were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction an

Variability of toe pressures during haemodialysis: comparison of people with and without diabetes; a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes, end stage renal disease (ESRD), and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are associated with a higher risk of diabetes-related lower limb amputation. Timely identification of PAD with toe systolic blood pressure (TSBP) and toe-brachial pressure index (TBPI) is critical in order to implement foot protection strategies to prevent foot complications in people with ESRD. There is limited evidence describing the effect of haemodialysis on TSBP and TBPI. This study aimed to determine the variability of TSBP and TBPI during haemodialysis in people with ESRD, and to determine whethe

Co-viewing an Educational Video: A Pilot Study About Mother-DHH Child Interaction.

This study analyzes the mother-child interaction that takes place after co-viewing an educational video, comparing a group of 12 Spanish hearing mothers of deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) 7- to 9-year-olds and a group of 12 Spanish mothers of an age-matched cohort of children with typical hearing (TH). The results show that, in order to ascertain what the children have understood from the video, the mothers of the DHH children ask significantly more questions than the mothers of children with TH. Regarding the strategies that they use to prompt their children to explain the video, the mothers of

Pattern of Endothelialization in Left Atrial Appendage Occluder by Optic Coherence Tomography: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Implantation of the left atrial appendage occluder (LAAO) has been proven to prevent stroke effectively in patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot tolerate anticoagulants. Incomplete endothelization of LAAO may cause device-related thrombus, and currently no good image modality exists to clearly see LAAO endothelialization. We aimed to use coronary optic coherence tomography (OCT) to visualize LAAO endothelialization. METHODS AND RESULTS: We enrolled 14 patients (72.8±9.4 years old) undergoing pulmonary vein isolation with a preexisting LAAO implanted more than 1 year ago (5

Pathways to racial disparities in the effects of Good Samaritan Laws: A mixed methods pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose deaths continue to rise, and considerable racial inequities have emerged. Overdose Good Samaritan laws (GSLs) are intended to encourage overdose witnesses to seek emergency assistance. However, evidence of their effectiveness is mixed, and little is known regarding racial disparities in their implementation. This study examined GSL impact by assessing racial differences in awareness of and trust in New York state's GSL. METHODS: Using a sequential mixed methods design, Black and white participants were recruited from an existing longitudinal cohort study of people wh

A pilot study on identifying gene signatures as markers for predicting patient response to antiseizure medications.

The majority of the biomarkers were associated with the diagnosis of epilepsy and few of them can be applied to predict the response to antiseizure medications (ASMs). In this study, we identified 26 significantly up-regulated genes and 32 down-regulated genes by comparing the gene expression profiles of patients with epilepsy that responded to valproate with those without applying any ASM. The results of gene set enrichment analysis indicated that the ferroptosis pathway was significantly impacted (p = 0.0087) in patients who responded to valproate. Interestingly, the gene NCOA4 in this pathw

Correlation between Constipation Symptoms and Abdominal CT Imaging: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study.

Evaluation of chronic constipation is important, although it is often difficult to satisfactorily treat due to the complex interplay of factors. This study aimed to determine whether the volume of intraluminal contents and lateral diameter of the colon measured from computed tomography (CT) images were correlated with the symptoms of chronic constipation and stool consistency. Consecutive patients who underwent the Constipation Scoring System (CSS), Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) questionnaires and simple abdominal CT were selected retrospectively. The intestinal tract diameter at each site w

Open-label pilot study of romiplostim for thrombocytopenia after autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation.

There are no standard treatments to prevent or hasten the recovery from severe conditioning-regimen-induced thrombocytopenia occurring after autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (auto-HCT). We conducted an open-label, single-arm pilot study of romiplostim, a thrombopoietin receptor agonist, to enhance platelet recovery in patients with multiple myeloma or lymphoma undergoing auto-HCT. All patients were treated weekly with romiplostim starting day +1 after auto-HCT until the platelet count was >50 × 109/L without transfusion. Compared with contemporary retrospective data from romiplost

Prime-boost, double-dose influenza vaccine immunity in COPD: a pilot observational study.

BACKGROUND: COPD patients are more susceptible to viral respiratory infections and their sequelae, and have intrinsically weaker immune responses to vaccinations against influenza and other pathogens. Prime-boost, double-dose immunisation has been suggested as a general strategy to overcome weak humoral response to vaccines, such as seasonal influenza vaccination, in susceptible populations with weak immunity. However, this strategy, which may also provide fundamental insights into the nature of weakened immunity, has not been formally studied in COPD. METHODS: We conducted an open-label stud
