The free-living amoeboflagellate and potential human pathogen Naegleria fowleri causes the often fatal disease primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. The molecular repertoire responsible for the cytolytic and tissue-destructive activity of this amoeboid protozoon is largely unknown. Binding of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) to its cellular receptor, uPAR, potentiates plasminogen activation and localizes it to the cell surface. A novel "long chain" toxin BmP09 has been purified and characterized from the venom of the Chinese scorpion Buthus martensi Karsch.
